One of the problems with our high water table is the inability to significantly depress the seating bowls of our stadiums/arena in the Sodo district. Hence, they all rather loom larger on the skyline than what I'd prefer.

m - Your question got me thinking. I'm torn between something far out like the Library or more staid and classy like Benaroya Hall, leaning toward the latter. Ooo oo how about this .. since the other two structures soar, how about a fantastic (Sydney Opera House??) soaring structure for this site also, so the impact of all three is migrating birds taking off from the mud flats. Just a thought.

We can make any structure fantastic, given enough money. The new Barclays Center in Brooklyn cost $1 Billion, we'll be having an arena for $450 million. Is it fair to kvetch when our arena doesn't have the same 'wow' factor? I'm not saying that Barclays is the pinnacle of arena design, just that the designers of our new arena will not be given the full 64 color box of crayolas to play with.

I think part of that $1Billion price tag is location. What does that arena cost in Seattle? $600 Million?

The developer paid MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) $100 million for the whole Atlantic Yards development{link below}, which includes the Barclays Arena, but is supposed to also have 20 other residential towers. My understanding is that Seattle's Arena will pay $20 Million to Hansen for the property he has already amassed, so most likely, the actual land prices are comparable.

So Brooklyn gets $1 Billion arena, minus land cost, Seattle gets $450 million arena, minus land cost ($430 million) we shouldn't be stunned we aren't getting a Taj Mahal of sports arenas.

These make me like the arena designs a whole lot more. I like the idea of a very transparent facade with an inner part that actually constitutes the arena itself.
