BARCELONA | Sagrada Familia (World's highest cathedral) | 172m | 564ft | U/C

Sagrada Familia cathedral (1882-2026) 170 m

The expiatory church of the Sagrada Familia, known simply as the Holy Family (Sagrada Família), is a large Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona (Spain), designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Launched in 1882, still under construction (September 2011). It is the masterpiece of Gaudí, and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture.

Construction began in the Gothic style, but, assuming the Gaudí project in 1883, was completely rethought. According to standard procedures, from sketches improvised overall building as construction progressed. He took just 31 years, dedicating the rest of his life, the last fifteen exclusively.

One of their most innovative ideas was the design of high circular conical towers that stand over the portals pointed, tapering with height. The dish with a twist designed to give an upward trend across the front, aided by a multitude of windows that pierce the tower following forms espirales.1

The temple, when completed, will have 18 towers, four in each of the three entrances, portals and domes mode, you have a system of six towers, with central dome tower, dedicated to Jesus, 170 meters height, four around it, dedicated to the evangelists, and a second dome dedicated to the Virgin. The interior will consist of innovative tree-inclined columns and vaults based on hyperboloids and paraboloids looking for the optimal form of the catenary.

Gaudí died in 1926, only one tower had been built. Building project plans and kept only a plaster model that was badly damaged during the Civil War have since continued española.2 works: portals currently finished the Birth and Passion, and has begun the Gloria, and are running inside the vaults. The work performed Gaudí, ie the Nativity façade and crypt, has been included by UNESCO in 2005 in the World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí". It is also, since 2007, one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.3

The temple was declared a minor basilica consecrated and the November 7, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI.

This is the first time I've ever seen interior pictures. Amazing, like nothing else on earth.

Weird to see a thread about this just now. But I guess this can be still become the longest thread ever

I visited it last summer and the interior was absolutely mind-boggling! I sat down for 15 minutes just staring at that ceiling.

I took this photo when the sun was right behind this window. Absolutely amazing.

The height cannot be captured. You simply have to stand there to feel it. I tried making a picture on the floor to create a sense of how big it is. And this is not even the highest part.

That is already covered and finished, but still a lot of work going on outside.
The highest point, when finished, will be the top of the cross:
172 metres.

Actually, the SF is not consecrated as a Cathedral but a (Minor) Basilica and Expiatory church.. Anyway, it is Cathedral-sized and a shows an unique magnificence.

That is sensational!

I have seen this building from the outside once, in the Summer of 2008 and was amazed at it's size - but it is only now I have seen the 'render' of the finished building.

Is that what it is really going to look like in 15 years! I cannot wait to visit it again when it is finished! The size of the current towers is already overwhelming, it is going to be unbeleivable when the main 170m tower is completed - it will be twice as tall! Truly remarkable.

Very expensive for a building that wasn't even finished, and then you had to wait and pay more to take the elevator.
