Houston region is now the most diverse in the U.S.
By Jeannie Kever
Updated 10:52 a.m., Monday, March 5, 2012
http://www.chron.com/news/houston-te...-S-3382354.php

The Houston metropolitan area is now the most ethnically diverse large metropolitan area in the country, with two suburbs - Pearland and Missouri City - leading the region in diversity.

The findings come from a new report from Rice University based on an analysis of census data from 1990, 2000 and 2010.

Report co-author Michael Emerson, a sociologist and co-director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice, attributed the growth in diversity to a 1965 shift in immigration laws, which changed the way visas were granted.

Before that change, immigration was dominated by people from Europe. Once the United States began granting equal numbers of visas to every country, immigrants from Latin America, Asia and Africa became dominant.

The report found that Pearland and Missouri City have surpassed Houston as the most diverse in the region.

The report produced by the Kinder Institute and the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas also found:

The city of Houston remained more segregated than other areas of the metropolitan area.

Segregation among African-Americans and Latinos has declined the most rapidly.

According to the analysis, the percentage of metropolitan area residents who are Anglo dropped to 40 percent by 2010, down from almost 58 percent in 1990.

Anglos make up 48.9 percent of the population in New York.

The percentage of Latinos in the Houston area increased to about 40 percent by 2010, up from 20 percent in 1990. The report says that Latinos will become the region's largest ethnic group within a few years.

The percentage of Asians has almost doubled over the past 20 years to 6.5 percent, up from 3.4 percent in 1990.

The percentage of African-Americans has barely budged - 16.8 percent in 2010, down slightly from 17.5 percent in 1990.

List of US states by unemployed people, according to:
www.usdebtclock.org
1. California 1997000
2.Texas 994000
3.Florida 875000
4.New York 750000
5.Illinois 671000
I've rounded the data to make it easier to read.
We should check these data again in a month, to see the diference.

On the other hand Atlanta-Sandy Springs seems to have lost most jobs -13100, with Indianapolis-Carmel second -6300.
Interesting that Detroit taken as a MSA recovers 22700 jobs although the Detroit city decreases in population.

Asians fastest-growing race in United States, census finds

Asians are the fastest growing race group in the United States, reflecting a surge in immigration from the entire region over a decade, the US Census Bureau said Wednesday. As part of an ongoing analysis of the data it reaped from its 2010 census, the federal agency said those who identified themselves as Asian alone, and not mixed race, grew by 43.3 percent from a decade earlier.

That was more than four times faster than the rate of growth for the overall US population, which grew 9.7 percent in the same period to 308,745,538.

Some 14.7 million people, or 4.8 percent of the total population, identified themselves as Asian alone. Another 2.6 million, or 0.9 percent, said they were Asian in combination with another race group, most commonly white.

When looking at metros with <500k, please be dubious since some of the data looked wrong. They had some micropolitan areas with 60% growth in one year that shouldn't have been even close.

I would also like to point out that we'll get definite answers in two weeks as the Census releases their July 1,2011 estimates for the metropolitan and micropolitan areas,

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/relea...n/cb12-13.html

June 28th is the release of the city data. Both are very important and will be watched carefully. If we see a huge bump in New York's MSA, that portends for good news for New York City which challenged the census numbers

I'm very anxious to see those numbers. How accurate are they? What kind of parameters they use?

The metro numbers should be solid. From my experience, the census 2010 numbers were mostly in line with their estimates. They usually overstate central city populations and understate unincorporated populations so it balances out in the end. The city proper numbers to be revealed in June should be a little less accurate but will undoubtedly be the best and most accurate barometer you'll find. The Census is the gold-standard and for good reason

Yes, I've noticed that comparing 1999/2009 Estimates with the 2000/2010 Census. But how are they able to track the trends? Taking this Pittsburgh example, how they can ascertain this area is no longer loosing people (if that is the case) unlike the previous decades?
