This thread actually made me angry :-(. While the rest of the world has progressed far ahead. We as the World's eminent super power (Especially in california) cannot even get a 40 mile stretch of high speed rail.

China's Rail infrastructure is truly awesome. Its hard to believe they started High Speed rail service barely a few years ago.

In case people misunderstood me.. The back story is in california we have been fighting a losing battle to build a high speed rail system.

World’s longest high-speed rail opens Dec 26

World’s longest high-speed rail opens Dec 26

Quote:
December 14, 11:24 am

The Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway, which is the world’s longest, is opening on Dec. 26, according to the China Central Television.

With this, a trip between Beijing and Guangzhou, a distance of 2,294 kilometers, will be cut from 20 hours to eight hours.

The Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway will travel through the cities of Shijiazhuang in North China's Hebei Province, Wuhan in Central China's Hubei Province, and Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong Province, the China Daily reported earlier.

The ticket prices for the new line have not yet been released by the Ministry of Railways. But the report said that they will likely cost more than 900 yuan ($144) for a second-class seat, much more than the current prices of 253 yuan for a seat and around 450 yuan for a sleeper ticket.

During the first 11 months of the year, fixed-asset investment in railways, including railway infrastructure investment and train purchases, totaled 506.97 billion yuan ($81.1 billion), reversing 15 months of previous decline, the Ministry of Railways said on Monday.

Total investment in fixed railway assets during the period increased 3.1 percent year-on-year, including 431.9 billion yuan worth of investment in capital construction, up 9 percent compared to the same of stage last year, according to the ministry.

Earlier in October, the ministry increased this year’s investment to 630 billion yuan ($101.73 billion), as part of Beijing’s latest efforts to boost the slowing economy.

This is at least the fourth time this year that the ministry has raised its investment target since the start of July. Premier Wen Jiabao announced, at the time, that promoting investment growth is the key to stabilizing economic expansion that has fallen to its slowest pace in three years.

Terminal velocity: China tests world's longest high-speed rail line
Quote:
Published: 23 December, 2012, 02:2

China has set a new record by successfully testing the longest high-speed rail line in the world, capable of covering 700 kilometers in only two and a half hours.

More than 100 reporters had the chance to experience the top speed of over 300 km an hour on the northern segment of the 2,298 kilometer Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway line. Their 693 km test drive from Beijing to Zhengzhou took only two and a half hours to complete.

The entire route is expected to open on December 26 and is designed to reduce the travel time to about 8 hours from the current 20 plus hours by the existing lines. The railway has 35 stops and is designed to hit speeds of 350 km per hour.

More than 2,000 tickets were sold for the first Guangzhou-Beijing commercial journey. A second-class fare from Beijing to Guangzhou is 865 yuan ($138 dollars) while the cheapest plane seat costs only 25 yuan more.

The aerodynamic bullet train makes little noise and offers reclining seats and a stainless steel toilet with slightly more bathroom space than would usually be found on an airliner.

China's high-speed rail network was only established in 2007, by 2010 it already covered 8,358 kilometers of track. China aims to increase that number to 16,000 kilometers by 2020.

83 meters one second, twice faster than a hurricane.a one yuan coin can stand for 10 seconds on this fast moving train and a full glass of water doesn't spill a drop.
