Thank you very much. I always turn into Sad Panda watching pictures from North Korea, if you get a chance take some shots of people. I'd like to see their faces.

Wow, what a fascinating thread!

North Korea is a truly bizarre place, like a land that time forgot. Unfortunately, most of the people are nearly starving and malnourished.

Sad, almost no smiling faces...on the other hand I noticed no obesity except for their leader.

Amazing, such a bizarre country, although it looks surprisingly normal in some ways

Interesting pictures.
I always wanted to go but never dared.
(I thought about that when I was Beijing the first time - to make a short trip to north Korea.)
There should be some spectacular nature in the country.

Kaesong would also be interesting to see.

I don't think it looks like a dump at all; North Korea (I'm assuming these photos were all taken in or near Pyongyang) actually looks extremely clean and sterile; like a city that isn't lived in. Even the streets are devoid of automobile traffic.

The most striking thing that I find about these photos is the complete absence of modern communication devices, like cell phones, portable media players, laptops, etc. Everywhere else in the entire world (even in extremely impoverished nations), you will see people using this kind of technology. In North Korea, these conveniences are strictly forbidden. I wonder what it must be like to live in such isolation and unable to learn even the most basic knowledge about the outside world.

I/We visited Kaesong on the way back from the DMZ. It was an interesting little city.

Mobile Phones can be found in North Korea. While as visitors we had our phones taken off of us there are people with mobile phones (the elite).

More likely those photos are showing off what the North Korean guides want you to see (inc the most well off portions of Pyongyang). I doubt these photos accurately show what is really representative of life in North Korea.

Anyways neither of those cities you mentioned suffer from chronic blackouts (which is not the case in North Korea).

Like I said in Ozscrapers, this photo thread was illuminating and I am very jealous of you visiting a place I've wanted to see for a long time.

Though the places you were taken were obviously the "best" places in NK, they certainly don't look that bad at all.

As for some of the comments, well, I don't see anything "dump" like about these photos. Hong Kong can look like a real dump in the backstreets, but it is one of the most amazing cities in the world that I really like. Also, how many pictures on SSC show people smiling madly at a camera pointed at them? Of course you're not going to see people walking around with grins plastered on their faces. It's a city with real people in it after all. I think people are looking for negatives to back up a lot of their preconceptions. No, this isn't me saying the regime in NK is good, nor that the people live a good standard of life overall, however, it would be prudent to actually take the photos for what they are rather than projecting onto them.

Thanks again for the photos and sorry for the long comment.
