State makes giant strides in IT sector, forms new policy

The Infopark in Kochi.

The year 2011 saw Kerala making giant strides in the IT sector with construction work beginning for SmartCity and Infopark readying for its second phase, both in Kochi, and Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram adding nearly 50 companies.

The state exported Rs2,700-crore worth software for the fiscal ending on March 31, 2011, but it constituted just one per cent of the country’s total IT export for the year. However, the initiatives Kerala made this year can see its exports doubling every year from 2014, experts say.

The Rs 2,000-crore SmartCity project in Kochi can be fully operational in five-and-a-half years instead of 10 years as conceived earlier, according to its managing director Baju George. On completion, it will be one of the largest self-sustained, knowledge-based business parks in India, employing nearly one lakh people in the IT and ITes sector. The government of Kerala that has leased out 250 acres of land for the mega project, is keen that the work is completed at the earliest.

Three multinational companies have already evinced interest in the Rs 2,500 crore, 80 lakh sqft Phase II of Infopark coming up at Kunnathunadu and Puthencruz villages in Kochi. The second phase, which can create 80,000 software jobs, is expected to be completed in eight years.

An Infopark unit also began in Cherthala this year, giving employment to 400 software professionals, in tune with the government policy to bring IT jobs to small towns and villages as well.

During 2011, Oracle, ITC Infotech and Capgemini logged in at Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram. Over 9,000 jobs were generated with this. The growth rate of Technopark firms during the last fiscal was about 38.8 percent which was above the national average.

“Throughout the year there has been a steady growth in the industry and we hope that it would continue in the next year also,” said Technopark senior manager (business development) Mr M.Vasudevan.

Commissioning of the Technopark phase-III at 92 acres of land and the Technocity project coming up at 450 acres of space near Pllaipuram keep the hopes of the state capital in attracting more IT and ITES ventures to the state high. The own campuses of UST Global and TCS and a new building of Infosys, besides the one that was inaugurated earlier this year, are some of the major ongoing projects in the IT sector in the state capital.

The Cyberpark in Kozhikode is also expected to be operational in another 12 to 15 months. The UDF government, meanwhile, is in the final stages of bringing out a new IT policy for the state which is expected to give further concessions for new ventures. It is hoped that the investors’ conclave ‘Emerging Kerala’ to be held in Kochi in September 2012 will bring more investments in the IT sector in the state.

I don't like this "Kunnathunadu-Puthencruz" business. The place is just across the river from Infopark!!

Some of the national chains here write their address with survey number, village etc. See Cinamax's address: Oberon Mall, survey no. 154/8.1, 8.3, 9A1, 9A2, 9B, NH Bypass, Edapally Junction, Ernakulam.

Well, Technically, one part of the Smart City land comes between the two campuses.

My point was, even though the river flows in between, which separate the Local Admin units, the locations are practically contiguous. Calling it by the village name make it seem that the place is at Puthencruz, which lies far to the east.

Seriously?

I marked it up on Wikimapia.

http://wikimapia.org/22722553/Infopark-Phase-2

The Kadambrayar is the border between Kakkanad, Puthencruz and Kunnathunad Villages.

With Infopark -phase1 and Infopark - phase2 branding itself , I was assuming it to an extension of the existing facility. I didn't really understand the problem with "Kunnathunadu-Puthencruz" reference. (I am not sure of state of developments between places there, and local admin boundaries that's why I am asking this) Do you mean branding it as Just Kakkanad or for that matter Infopark Kochi would be more helpful ?

Exactly. It should be emphasized that it is a part of the IT zone.

What value does it add to repeatedly saying it comes up in Kunnathunad and Puthencruz villages? In fact, what value does it add to say which revenue unit it comes up at? OTOH, saying that it belongs to the IT zone where Infopark, Kinfra Park and Smart City operate adds value.

Yeah, an IT zone kind of branding which emphasizes that Infopark 1 &2, Kinfra Park and Smart City are pretty much contiguous would certainly help in marketing Kochi IT ....

I think Ph-II and Smart city are much more in Brahmapuram rather than puthencruz or Kunnathunad.Regarding Road connectivity there is a proposal for a 4 lane connect Smart City and infopark phase2 to SP-AP road.Heard it from friends. Not 100% sure.

What do you mean, proposal?

The six lane 'IT Expressway' already connects IP Phase 1 to SP/AP Road. All it takes is a short bridge across the stream to reach the bigger parcel of Smart City land, and it is in the plan.

The main Infopark Road currently goes over the river by a 2 lane bridge to connect the Phase 2 parcel. This bridge is going to be rebuilt as a multi level bridge because smart city needs a dedicated connectivity between the two parcels of land.

In short, all the three projects are contiguous. There is a river running through in the middle. That's all.

Yes, there is a proposal to run a 4 lane road eastward to Karimugal and Puthencruz. But there are a number of similar proposals around.

I had been telling every authority that I could contact about the need for connectivity to the eastern side of the IT Hub. The catchment area for these projects is going to be the eastern side, as the west is already on the verge of saturation.
