KOCHI: Almost seven months after it advertised for name suggestions, the second phase project of Infopark Kochi is still nameless. Despite getting 300-odd suggestions, the Infopark authorities have not found an apt name for the project coming up at Kakkanad.

"We have shortlisted a few names, but they don't meet our expectations. We are still open to suggestions," says Infopark CEO Gigo Joseph. Some of the suggested names are the usual ones like Infocity and InfoparkKeralam.

All IT parks in the state are identified by a unique theme-based name. For instance, all the towers in Technopark are named after the rivers of Kerala like Pamba, Periyar and Nila. The Infopark at Kakkanad has spiritual names like Tapasya, Thejomaya, Vismaya while at the Koratty Infopark the towers are named after trees.

Work on Infopark second phase progressing
Buoyed by its turnover during the previous financial year, Infopark Kochi is making steady progress with the preliminary work of its second phase being developed on 160-odd acres in Kunnathunadu and Puthencruz villages.

The piling work ahead of the construction of the first IT building has gathered momentum and is likely to be completed within a month, Infopark sources said. The initial earth works for the internal road for the second phase is under way.

The full-fledged road is expected to be ready by this September or October.

The phased installation of power connectivity is also progressing. Power lines are being drawn ahead of the drawing of the 11 kv lines.

The first IT building with a built-up space of about four lakh sq.ft at an estimated cost of Rs. 100 crore is expected to be completed by July 2013. Infopark is already receiving inquires for space from interested companies although the building is a good year away. The allocation of space would start only by the middle of next year, sources said.

Already, 97 acres of the second phase has received Special Economic Zone status. The entire second phase would be developed by 2020, by which time it is expected to generate about 80,000 jobs. It is also expected to give a big momentum to the overall software exports of Infopark Kochi.

In fact, Infopark expects returns from software exports to register not less than a six-fold increase.

The entire second phase of Infopark will be developed in three phases. Initially, BPO Complex, software development block and a convention centre would be set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crore.

The total investment for the phase two expansion has been estimated to be in the range of Rs. 2,500 crore, of which Infopark would invest about Rs.475 crore in the next three years.

Apart from the Rs.200 crore to be invested on the BPO complex, Rs. 200 crore and Rs. 75 crore would be invested in basic infrastructure and core infrastructure respectively.

When completed, the second phase would provide a built-up space of 8 million sq.ft. This would take the total built-up space provided by Infopark to about 15 million sq.ft. taking into account the combined space provided by the IT parks at Koratty, Cherthala, and Ambalapuzha as well.

Has Cognizant identified the land to construct the campus? After that there are formalities like Environmental clearance etc. So will it be able to begin at the end of year?

Anyhow Infopark Phase II with less publicity has at least started construction of 1st IT building.(Smart city is left with just publicity with no major work going on)

I m seriously scared at the pace with which Phase II is moving..its far too slow...even now basic infrastructure is not setup...

Cognizant has already used the 2 of the 3 floors allotted to them..and it wouldnt take more than 4-5 months for them to fill up the remaining space.

But I feel Infopark Phase II is moving faster than Smart city. At least the piling works of 1st building has started. BTW any progress on Cognizant building their campus in 2nd phase? Have they identified the land and submitted application for ED etc?

If i m not wrong the land was identified sometime back. The problem wd Cognizant is that they are growing a bit too fast and we dont have ready 2 occupy space available They would need atleast another 2 more years to make the first phase of their campus fully ready.

Infopark-II will have mall, hotel

Social infrastructure has received prime of place in Infopark’s phase-II plans, with as much as 30 per cent of the 160 acres being left for a school, hospital, five-star hotel, shopping mall, boat club and sports centre, among other facilities.

“The work on phase II has gathered pace and we are looking to complete land allocation in two years. The project will have a built-up area of 80 lakh sq ft and will provide employment to 80,000 IT professionals”, Gigo Joseph, Infopark CEO, told Deccan Chronicle, while setting aside claims from some quarters that Infopark and SmartCity would have to compete with each other for clients.

“One major complaint (of IT professionals) about Kerala is that it does not have adequate social infrastructure including entertainment avenues. Phase-II will be an answer to such complaints,” the CEO said.

Of the total investment of Rs 2,500 crore for phase-II that’s coming up at Kunnathunad and Puthencruz villages, the government would invest Rs 500 crore and the remaining will come from the co-developers.

The masterplan has been developed by US-based Canon Designs, which has envisaged a green township on the banks of the Kadamprayar river.

US-based Cognizant and IIM-Kozhikode are the first two entrants in the project. The former, coming up on 15 acres, will have a 12 lakh sq ft built-up area and will provide employment to 15,000 professionals. The IIM-K has been allotted five acres for the Kochi campus.

“The Infopark has a single window clearance for all licences and those tying up with the project need not go after different agencies for them”, Gigo Joseph said.
