San Jose LRVs return to service in Sacramento
10 Sep 2015

USA: The first of 21 light rail vehicles to be refurbished by Siemens for Sacramento Regional Transit District returned to service on September 10, operating on the Blue Line extension to Cosumnes River College which opened in August.

The high-floor LRVs were originally built by Canada’s Urban Transportation Development Corp for Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority which operated them in San Jose between 1987 and 2003, when they were acquired by RT and put into storage

FTA announces TOD grants
16 Sep 2015

USA: The Federal Transit Administration announced grants totalling $19·5m from its Transit-Oriented Development Planning Pilot Program on September 14. The funding will go towards detailed planning in 17 metropolitan areas.

‘Transit-oriented development is critical to the success of new projects and to the economy of the local communities they serve’, said FTA Acting Administrator Therese McMillan.

Six of the 21 projects concern BRT corridors. The remaining 15 cover a mixture of urban rail modes

Sacramento Area Council of Governments has been allocated $1·1m to encourage TOD around the planned Downtown Riverfront Streetcar

Sacramento Streetcar In President Obama's Budget
Bob Moffitt
Tuesday, February 9, 2016 | Sacramento, CA

President Obama has released his 2017 budget proposal. It includes money for the streetcar project in Sacramento and West Sacramento.

Sacramento City Councilman Steve Hansen says the inclusion of the project in the proposed federal budget is significant.

"Before, we were in a bucket of tentative projects. What the President's budget included was a specific $75 million for us. That had never been done before. This reflects a lot of work between then and now which is an improved environmental review and an improved ridership forecast. "

Hansen says a federal contribution would bring the amount of guaranteed dollars to 130 million, which is still $37 million shy of the project cost.

To close that gap, Hansen says the city could reduce the scope of the project or could create an assessment district for business owners in the project area.

Voters living within the project's footprint in Sacramento voted against a special tax district last year that would have raised an estimated $30 million even though the land owners had approved of the tax in an earlier advisory vote.

The city hopes the State of California will contribute $10 million to the project from the Cap and Trade program.

Just one station out from the other lines and only every half an hour train? No wonder nobody uses it.

The Green line should have never been constructed to begin with. I don't see what's the rush to build a starter line that goes two stations in the railyards. There will be money and transportation grants in the future that can be used to at least push the green line into Natomas. The $43 million to build the line was a waste.

Sacramento streetcar moves forward with $30 million state grant

If you wanted more public transit options for getting to Sacramento's new downtown arena, you're in luck.

The City of Sacramento announced Tuesday it's received a $30 million state grant that will allow the 3.3 mile initial line of the Downtown/Riverfront Streetcar Project to move forward.

"I think it's a great idea and anything that can get people moving around easily without a big hassle is fun," says Lynn Steidle, Antioch resident.

The project could be financed as early as the 2017 fiscal year and is expected to be operational by 2021.

Officials said the streetcar will connect West Sacramento and Sacramento, making stops at Raley Field, the Bridge District, Golden 1 Center, and downtown Sacramento.

Other funds are needed for the project, but officials said the state grant show's California's commitment to the proposed system. Planning will continue as the final budget pieces are secured, according to city officials.

“Today's news moves us one step closer to our vision of Sacramento 3.0; an interconnected, innovative, transit-accessible city where people live, work, eat and play,” Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said in a prepared statement.
