What I like in Lithuania is order in advertising on the streets. People can really rest in such nice public space.

I wish we had such order in Poland, where there are too much of bilboards, led screens, posters, etc on the streets.

Punia
Small town in South Lithuania

An interesting fact that there was one of most important wooden castle in Grand Duchy of Lithuania during war against Teutonic Order. After victory, here was built stone royal mansion with some defensive traits.

Town in map:

Paulava Republic in Minor Merkinė village in Vilnius area near Turgeliai town

Existed in 1769-1795, until Russia Empire occupation
Sometimes this place is called Lithuanian Monaco. It was real Republic in Both Nation Republic, Grand Duchy of Lithuania which was approved by the Both Nation Republic sejm.

Area: about 1640 hectares

Founder: Povilas Ksaveras Bžostovskis (pol. Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski)

Republic heritage reached our times in poor condition, the palace was burned during the Soviet period. But I think current view is still very impressive.

One of example how during XIX c. occupation and soviet times was destroyed one of historical centre in Lithuania - Merkinė.

Firstly let's back to middle ages.
Fortress mound.
Here was built wooden castle, which became one of most important defence point near Nemunas river against Teutonic knights.

After the Battle of Grunwald castle lost its importance as defence point and left as residence of Grand Duke. In the end of XV c. in centre of town was built the palace of grand duke and little by little castle disappeared from the town's skyline. Left only mound, which most part during XIX c. was washed by river.

Until 1655 war against Moscow and Sweden, city became one of most important cultural and commercial centre in Lithuania propria. Here a lot of time spent king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania Władysław IV Vasa, also here he died in his palace which was in the town square.
After 1655 war, in town left only 20-25% of the former population. During Nordic war city also was destroyed and city rights lost in 1795. It coincided with the Russian Empire occupation. During XIX c. almost all heritage was destroyed... In XVIII c. Swiss traveler mentioned town as town of churches and large buildings, in XIX c. T. Triplin saw only the ruins. Survived only one baroque church.

In the town square.
Here in XVI c. was built city hall, building was demolished in the end of XIX c. In former city hall site was built ortodox church, as result of russification policy.

That's how it seems now the place where was Dominican church (built in XVII c.).

Another example, place of St. Peter's Church (built in the end of XVII c.)

In this place now there is cemetery of Soviet soldiers. All monuments for Soviets in Lithuania now are demolished, left just small examples like this.

Place of former manor

Where you see yellow house, in XVIII c. is mentioned, that in this place was a two-storey palace.

Survived gothic-baroque church (built in XV c., reconstructed in XVII c.)
