What is the specialty of the project?

Aster Medcity is not a regular hospital or multi-specialty tertiary hospital project. Its a well planned mega campus, highlighting the objectives of ASSOCHAM (Association of Chamber of Commerce of India) for setting up planned medical cities in India, as part of making the country the hub of Medical tourism.

The concept revolves around establishing key Center of Excellence (COEs) in multiple areas of specialties which acts itself as research hub along with treatments. The Aster Medcity will have 9 COEs as Phase 1, each autonomous units with key co-operation and support leading operational partners across the world.

Aster Institute for Bone and Spine

Aster Institute for Gastroenterology and Herpetology

Out of this, 6 are major COE, while 3 are minor COEs.

MedCity is trying to involve reputed institutions in the country and abroad for intellectual and operational partnership in the overall project or in the individual centres of excellence. This will help to benchmark against the best and adopt their protocols and procedures.

MedCity shall involve actively in Post Graduate Teaching and Training programs as well as in Clinical Trials and Research to usher in COEs.

Apart from this, a Multi-specialty General Hospital and Clinical Support Center will be there for regular and secondary treatments. The Clinical Support Center will have following sub-units

• Emergency Centre
• Critical Care Unit
• Operation Suite
• Diagnostic Centre
• Day Care Centre
• Health Check Up Centre

The Second phase of the project aims to complete remaining 2.8 Million sqft, marking full completion of 6 Million Sqft.

The second phase plans to add around 1500 beds to existing making one of the largest in South Asia.

More dedicated COEs is planned along with Medical College, Nursing College, Support & Hospital Management training center.

A residential zone is planned for entire staff as part of this Second Phase

As phase 1 itself, the Medcity will have

1. 500 Seater dedicated Medical Convention Center

2. A well planned integrated Research center with one of country's largest Medical library

3. A 4 star hotel and 3 towers of serviced apartments for byestanders and non-patient guests

4. Housing facility of Doctors and other medical staff, making fully residential facility

5. Waterfront views from all IP rooms with boat jetties and water facades

The Construction has started and AFAIK, 1 floor is complete. Phase I comprising of 540 bed hospital, to the tune of Rs 500 Crore will roll out by Sep 2012, if things go as planned

That's less than 1 year from now

That's less than 1 year from now

Is it 500 crore or 1500 crore... I have conflicting reports... Do you have any idea? I don't think, you can build all these as Phase 1 with just 500 crore.... Or may be just the hospital complex alone.....

AFAIK, Phase I is a 540 bed hospital alone worth Rs 500 Crore.

will common man be ever able to go and get treatment there... sounds a costly affair..look and feel gives a very posh healtcare centre , so charges will be according to that.

DM has various centers catering to all class of people. No idea, whom they target to this project. Infact, this is focused on Medical Tourism, still it has to cater common folks so as to stay there.

Middle Class, now a days, might extend their budget if there are priorities. For e.g: My friend required a surgery, which costed Rs 50K, and there was some new method in which he will be fine in 3 days, that cost Rs 1 lac, We went for the latter so that he can leave the hospital 2 weeks earlier!
