Milan, Italy

Recently I did some travelling in that part of Europe and had a very brief visit to Milan which lasted only a few hours. It was basically a walk from Milano Centrale railway station to the Cathedral and back. It surely wasn't enough to see the city properly but there is always the next time.

Map

Anyway, here are those photos which I managed to take.

1. Trenitalia ETR 500 in Milano Centrale. One of the Italian HSR trains

2.

3. Exit from the station

4. Milano Centrale station. This was the very first place I did see in Milan and despite clearly suggesting the grandeur of the city it was a rather shady loacation with all kinds of people watching you and even more so you pockets and bags. It's best to be watchful

5. Pirelli Tower (Grattacielo Pirelli). 127m tall high-rise building built in 1960m. To this day it is one of the main modern landmarks of Milano. However new taller, sexier and certainly more beautiful skyscrapers are rising next door. Milan is going taller which is always a good thing.

6. Via Vittor Pisani street leading from the Centrale station area towards the old city

7. Porta Nuova Garibaldi. A new 231m tall skyscraper nearly complete in Porta Nuova development zone which is going to be a rather solid and visually impressive high-rise cluster near the Pirelli Tower and Centrale station

Pretty impressive stuff, man! I'm usually not a big fan of sacral architecture, but Milan's cathedral is just jaw dropping.

Thanks!
The Duomo is impressive indeed. Last year I visited the famous Cologne Cathedral and therefore I was especially tempted to see the renowned Milan Cathedral and compare my experience in both cases... those are two of some of the most impressive sacral buildings in Europe and perhaps the world. To my own disbelief, however, I have concluded that Koelner Dom is far more impressive and gives a much bigger "wow" factor once you're standing next to it. Milan Cathedral just doesn't stand a chance really... in my opinion anyway.

Perhaps because the building despite being massive lacks height while in the case of Kolner Dom height is not an issue (it's world's second tallest church after all)

I prefer the St Mark's Basilica in Venice over both.

It looks very unique. I had a chance to visit Venice on my journey but went for Verona instead... which is yet another marvel in Italy. They are really lucky to have all those fascinating cities and stunning old architecture.

I agree to your opinion that Cologne Cathedral looks more impressive than Milan's one - at least in pictures (haven't been at them myself).

But to my mind (if we have started this discussion) there are probably no church in the world which could surpass La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Nice pics from an interesting city, even that personally, having been 3-4 times in both Milano and Torino, I tend to prefer Torino

Milano is big and has a lot of life and interesting events, but is also a very grey city (always with smog and air-pollution). But certainly an interesting and modern city, but absolutely not among the most beautiful cities of Italy...
