Faribault, Minnesota

Today I decided to check out Faribault (pronounced Fair-ih-boe), a town in Southern Minnesota at the confluence of the Cannon and Straight rivers. The town is named after French fur trader Alexander Faribault, who established a fur trading post at the modern-day site of the community.

Faribault is regarded as one of the most historically significant settlements in Minnesota, due to its early history as a camp of New France and eventual settlement which predates Minnesota's admittance to American territory.

In recent years, Faribault has become a major Minnesota hub for Somali immigration, and the town has opened mosques and several Somali businesses catering to the new surge in population.

The first time I went to the States it was to Minnesota. Now, part of my heart is in this beutiful state that enchanted me. I've been in many states but for me, Minnesota is the greatest one! I love the Land of the 10,000 Lakes! Greetings from Costa Rica!

For such a small, seemingly, workaday town, it has some handsome buildings.

I like the way a lot of homes in the U.S are painted in bright colours.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Minnesota! It's definitely a special place. Hope you get a chance to visit again sometime.

Yep, Faribault is a pretty blue collar place with ordinary people, although it's fairly unusual for a town to be so beautifully intact and almost untouched by the wrecking ball. There are a lot of historic beauties in Faribault! The same can't be said for most places.

It's quite popular here in Minnesota to paint houses in vibrant colors I think due to our very long and harsh winters. When everything is devoid of color and covered in snow for five months on end, we need a bit to keep from going completely crazy.

I think your Fairbault set is one of your best ones yet. The colors are vibrant and some of the shots have cool skies in them, I think that adds a lot to a photo. I was at work yesterday looking at those skies and wishing that I could go out and photograph.

Thanks, Som! I agree that this is one of my most interesting sets so far.

I was a bit disappointed at first when the weather turned grey, but after seeing the results, I really like how the sky looks in some of these (particularly the courthouse shot). Gives a kind of moody autumn-ish feel to them. I'll have to do some more experimenting with overcast shots.

Thanks, Expat. November is typically the cloudiest month in Minnesota, so if I make it out at all I'll almost definitely encounter more grey weather.

I think it was a pretty regular fall this year, but no where near as colorful as usual.

Usually by the time November rolls in, the trees around here are already completely bare, but there are still some green ones hanging on. The first half of October was abnormally hot (90° a few days), which I think threw things off a bit.

great shots and great thread Jennifat.
All of these small cities and towns are really charming
with great old architecture and some of them are vibrantly painted.
I really enjoy looking at them and looking forward for more.

Thanks, KC! I use a Nikon D50 with a standard 55mm and a 350mm telephoto lens. It's kind of an old camera, but it gets the job done.

Owatonna, Minnesota

In an effort to take advantage of the amazingly warm weather, I headed down to Owatonna, one of Southern Minnesota's largest communities.

The town seemed quiet considering it was the day after Christmas, but there were a few people enjoying the unseasonable temps. It's extremely unusual this time of the year that it's above freezing with no snow on the ground.

Interesting images.

You get the sense of big skies and open spaces from them.
