I'm slightly confused. Is this 30th street district the same as the University district? Or is the latter only a small part of the former? I am not familiar with Philly so it could be two completely different things. Anyway, very exciting times for Philly! I'm looking to relocate from London in the future and it's definitely one of my first options

It's two separate projects but both involve, at the least in small part, Drexel University (Schuylkill Yards is all Drexel; 30th Street is Drexel, SEPTA, Amtrak, PennDOT & 15 or so other groups). Their projects will both meet & include? however at the NW corner of 30th & John F. Kennedy Blvd. with one of the skyscrapers.

Philadelphia has so much going on right now. It's unfortunate there isn't a strong community on SSC to represent just how much development is happening there. You can see tons more about Philly development on the SkyscraperPage forums.

^completely agree. If interested in Philly development there is really only one place to go, SkyscraperPage.com. Look for the Philadelphia Highrise Development thread. All projects are updated constantly. Routinely news is broken here by those in the know, even before the media. Philly has a lot more going on than a lot of American cities.

Long-Delayed Chinatown Eastern Tower to Break Ground
Quote:
Following a series of delays and setbacks dating as far back as the project's original announcement in 2008, it appears that at long last there will be a ground breaking ceremony for the Chinatown Eastern Tower by the end of the year. To be developed by the local Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC), the 23-storey mixed-use Chinatown Eastern Tower Community Center is a residence and community centre slated for completion by Fall 2017.
Residential Highrise Development Proposed for 4th and Callowhill
Quote:
Developer Mark Rubin is planning to transform the corner of 4th and Callowhill Streets in Philadelphia with a 26- and 23-storey residential scheme of 454 units. Located within the East Callowhill Overlay, which encourages height in exchange for public benefits, the development promises mixed income housing, retail, public art, and open spaces as key community amenities.
