As there is no thread here to discuss the developments of other smaller airports in Tamilnadu, I am starting this thread to discuss on Tuticorin(TCR), Salem(SXV) and Vellore airports here..

AAI clips Madras Flying Club's wings
Nice Initiative.
This is the last news I heard about the Madras flaying club. Anybody has any updates? NEW DELHI: The Madras Flying Club (MFC) is in the lurch. Not only is the Airports Authority of India (AAI) unceremoniously showing it the door to take over the Chennai plot for airport expansion, it is also not offering the veteran flying club an alternative site. Ample representations to the ministry of civil aviation to intervene in the issue has fallen on deaf ears. Result: all flight training at the 80-year-old club has been halted for the last six months. With the recent sharp increase in flight traffic at the Chennai airport, the MFC has been asked to conduct all training from Vellore while still maintaining its Chennai base for aircraft maintenance. Soon, the AAI, which had earlier granted it permission to operate in Vellore, called its occupancy there “unauthorised”. It wanted the flying club to approach it again through a tender, along with other interested private parties. Twenty-five communications later from the MFC, the solution is still not in sight. The AAI has issued an ultimatum to the club to vacate at the earliest, even though it has collected the licence fee and land dues, running into lakhs of rupees. Letters that originally granted the MFC permission to train in Vellore and then of the flip-flop, dubbing the new operation unauthorised, are with Express. “Not only that, the Airports Authority of India refused to renew the passes of students until all the so-called land due is settled. We did so as well to continue the training of students. But now, the AAI, without any rhyme or reason, is finding reasons to get rid of us. We are a non-profit entity and one of the few clubs where flying training in India began. But, the Airports Authority of India contends that we are registered as a company and hence, liable. They are contradicting their own written communications,” said Captain Sebastian Joseph, the honorary secretary of Madras Flying Club. As of date, the club has six aircraft and 88 students undergoing flight training, while another 12 students are training for aircraft maintenance. “The club has supported many underprivileged sections of youth who just had a passion to fly but had no means to realise them. Through our scholarships, many such students were successfully flying captains today,” Capt Sebastian added. For the last six months, all flight training has stopped owing to these issues. “If airport expansion has to happen, then the Airports Authority of India should give us an alternative space in Chennai with appropriate infrastructure to continue our operations,” Capt Sebastian said. http://expressbuzz.com/nation/aai-cl...gs/306723.html Last edited by geico2000; October 30th, 2011 at 02:35 PM. |

SpiceJet set to take off from Tuticorin
Tuticorin is all set to get an additional flight service to Chennai, with SpiceJet likely to launch its services from Tuticorin to Chennai in the first week of December, 2011.
The Q – 400 series of SpiceJet Airlines, with a capacity of seventy eight seats, is expected to take off at 11.40 a.m. from Tuticorin airport and land at 1.05 p.m. in Chennai on a daily basis. Likewise, it will depart from Chennai at 9.55 a.m. and arrive in Tuticorin by 11.20 a.m., according to sources. Each of the passengers will be permitted to carry hand luggage weighing seven kilograms besides laptop. Apart from this, baggage weighing up to twenty kilograms could be permitted at the time of check –in operation. A team of experts and technocrats arrived at Tuticorin airport on Wednesday to gauge the existing flight conditions and security parameters. It is hoped that the increase in air connectivity would come as a boon especially to traders who are operating from the Tuticorin port. This new service would also help in boosting the tourist potential of the region. Of late most of the traders and tourists had to travel to Madurai for their onward journey as flight services from the port town was limited. Hailing the logistic support, J.P. Joe Villavarayar, former President, All India Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said it was a welcome move and the services was expected much earlier. Once the runway is extended up to 1950 meters from the existing 1350 meters, it is hoped that large aircraft operators would come forward to introduce their services. Various organisations hope that the authorities concerned would take up this opportunity and improve the infrastructural facilities at the existing airport. |

SpiceJet connects Tuticorin with Chennai
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...w/11022889.cms
Low-cost carrier SpiceJet today launched commercial flights connecting Tuticorin to Chennai. The first Chennai-Tuticorin flight, a Bombardier Q-400 NextGen turboprop aircraft, landed at the Tuticorin airport at 1105 today, SpiceJet said in a statement here. The budget airline had recently announced addition of Tuticorin as the 31st destination on its domestic network. Chennai was announced as the second base for SpiceJet's Q400 aircraft and the airline will position at least three planes there with an aim of enhancing connectivity from the Tamil Nadu capital in the second phase of its Q-400 expansion. SpiceJet's recent fleet expansion, with addition of these aircraft, aims to enhance air connectivity to smaller towns, the release added. |

Flight service brings cheers
Traders and industrialists of Tuticorin are jubilant over the launch of Spice Jet airlines - Q 400, with a capacity of 78 seats, from Tuticorin to Chennai and vice versa on Wednesday.
With an additional air connectivity, trade operations and industrial activities in Tuticorin would witness a booming export and import business for economic growth in India, according to T. Johnson, president, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin. It was certainly advantageous to those who frequent Tuticorin on business exchange programmes P.S.S.K. Raja Sankaralingam, general secretary, All India Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Tuticorin, said. Not only traders but people, who often travel to Chennai by trains and buses, stand to benefit a lot, K. Nehruprakash, Secretary, THUDITSSIA, said. Authorities should expedite the land acquisition process for expanding the Tuticorin airport. If the airport was expanded, night landing facilities could be made viable. Once such a development was made at the airport, international flight operators could provide services. Sixteen passengers boarded the flight bound for Chennai and 23 passengers got down in Tuticorin from Chennai after the flight was landed here on Wednesday. The flight is scheduled to land at 11.05 a.m. and take off at 11.20 a.m. daily. In coming days the patronage would increase.
