nice to know that Tuticorin now has 2 flights operating to chennai....Still there is a large scope for development of this airport. It would be more beneficial if Bangalore is connected via madurai.........

If BLR is connected from TCR via IXM, the stretch b/w IXM and TCR will get no patronage (or) very less patronage. With a full-fledged 4-laned road b/w Madurai and Tuty, It will hardly take 3 hrs by bus (or) only 1.5-2 hrs by your own vehicle/car.

So, the best option will be connecting BLR with TCR via CJB (Coimbatore)..this way, some seats can be filled up b/w CJB and TCR as by road, it will be a 8 hr journey atleast..

Good suggestion Gilli. There is a strong possibility this may work out well.

Oh thats a good idea, but more than this, international connectivity to madurai is more urgent now....whole south Tamil Nadu is waiting for this one, hope it happens within this year.It would bring a great impact for the development of madurai-tuticorin industrial corridor. Also it should be noted that we already have a major port at one end of the corridor.......

Chennai: Pongal being a very important festival in Tamil Nadu, the rush for home in people was anticipated. But the shock was in the fares.

The price of flight tickets within Tamil Nadu has shot up. According to reports, a single ticket to Tuticorin or Madurai will cost as much as to Kuala Lumpur or Dubai.

The prices of the tickets are for Saturday alone. The cost, around Rs.10,900, is 300 percent more than the actual.

Flying to Madurai will cost Rs.15,500 for a single ticket.

Reports say that the availability of tickets too is very low due to Pongal.

The fares will come down to the normal Rs.2,500 to Rs.3,000 on Sunday.

People say that a cab to Tuticorin will cost Rs.9,000.

Secondary runway at Chennai airport by mid-April

Work on the secondary runway at the Chennai airport has been completed and it will become operational from the middle of April, said V.P. Agrawal, Chairman, Airports Authority of India (AAI), here on Tuesday.

Mr. Agrawal, who arrived from Thiruvananthapuram, inspected various works progressing at the airport and held a meeting with officials. Later talking to journalists, he said the total length of the secondary runway would be 10,000 ft, of which the AAI would use 8,000 ft. This included the bridge across the Adyar, he said.

Talking about the new domestic terminal, Mr. Agrawal said most of the works were completed at the new terminal. Power connection would be provided to the new building by the end of this month. Forty-five days after the AAI completes testing works at the new place, it would become operationalised. When the new terminal becomes operational, the old terminal would be closed down.

As far as the new international terminal is concerned, the physical part would be completed by March 15 and after completing testing works, the terminal would become operationalised. Depending upon the second airport at Sriperumbudur, the old international terminal would be modified and put to use, he said.

Answering a question on the second airport at Sriperumbudur, he said it would have a runway, terminal building and approach radar. The new airport would carry spillover traffic from the existing airport. The AAI in association with the State government would operate the airport for eight years and then dilute the holdings, he said.

“If the State government allocates the required 5,000 acres of land, the AAI can take up the work of creating the runway and terminal building with a capacity to handle five million passengers annually at Sriperumbudur. But, the AAI may not take up extensive works at the second airport,” he said.

With regard to expansion of runways at Tiruchi, Madurai and Tuticorin, the State government has to provide the land. Only then runway expansion work in these airports could be taken up.

Expansion work on cargo terminal is also nearing completion. By March-end the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System would be installed at the cargo complex. This would be the first of its kind facility in the cargo area at the Indian airports, Mr. Agrawal added.

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Salem Airport will soon open its runway for air operators for value-added services. The airport, which has already emerged as a training field for commercial pilots with training academies pitching in their tents, is being preferred by various operators who are ready to offer specialised services - from air charter services (flying exclusively private aircraft for five to 100 passengers to any destination in India or abroad) to air ambulance services.

One of the leading chartered air service providers, Salem Air, is initiating a move to make the Salem Airport a vibrant airstrip though Kingfisher Airlines, which operated a lone commercial flight for more than a year but withdrew it for reasons unknown. Airport Authority of India (AAI) has appointed a full-time director for the Salem Airport indicating that it is on the fast track expansion mode.

“We need to exploit such an opportunity and explore the possibility of making the airport, which boasts of an excellent runaway nestled among hills, commercially viable for which Salem Air, which is running its commercial training academy, is making concerted efforts,” says its Chairman George Robin.

Salem Air, Mr. Robin says, is specialised in air ambulance services in other cities and is in the process of starting aircraft maintenance services at the Salem Airport. “Major aircraft companies are tying up with us to utilise the aircraft maintenance services offered by us. We are also the distributors of the prestigious TECNAM aircraft in India,” he adds.

Salem Aviation Services, another company belonging to the same group, is planning to start micro light flights and micro light pilot training at Salem and has decided to make Salem as its service hub. The airport is wooing major air cargo companies to utilise it for transporting goods to and from other commercial cities.

AAI sources, however, say that if the Salem district administration helps it in land acquisition, which has met a road block in the face of opposition from the locals, the airport expansion is sure to materialise.

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/article2890959.ece

- Note: Politics play major role in blocking the airport expansion. And KF withdrew services for unknown reason and not related with patronage. The Member of Parliament from Salem, Mr. Semalai need to do something for airport expansion.

Automated ATC System soon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport will soon switch over to the automated air traffic control (ATC) system, thereby becoming the seventh such airport in the country.
Titled ‘Indra’, the advanced automation technology, which is on a trial run now, is awaiting the final clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The new system has been installed at the airport at a cost of 3,19,000 Euros as part of the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) efforts to modernise the air traffic management system at the airports in its fold.
A DGCA team which visited the airport early this month had examined the safety and controller-friendly aspects of the new system.
‘’The automated system ensures zero error in our operations,’’ said Shibu Roberts, Joint General Manager (Air Traffic Management).
‘’The early warning system will alert the ATC personnel if two aircraft advance against each other breaching the safety standards,’’ he said.
The ATC rules stipulate a lateral separation of 5 nautical miles (NM) and vertical separation of 1,000 feet between two aircraft when they are in the 50 nautical mile-radius of the radar. Similarly, there are other separation standards if the aircraft are between 50 and 250 NM radius of the radar.
In the automated facility, the system will alert the ATC personnel if it finds two aircraft violating the separation standards.
‘’Another advantage of the new system is that it can incorporate data from four radars at a time. It will be implemented here once the ATC in Kochi and other nearby airports are automated,’’ Shibu Roberts said.
‘’The automated system equipped with STCA/MTCA (short-term and medium-term conflict alerts) is highly useful for the controllers,’’ said S Sajana Chandran, Deputy General Manager, Air Traffic Management.
‘’It will also make useful calculations based on the radar data. Besides actual positioning data, the system provides a graphical visualisation of flight progress with the calculated time of arrival,’’ he said.
‘’Information on the wind direction, cloud and pressure conditions is also displayed on the controlling system monitor,’’ Sajana Chandran said.
Although the automated system is in place, the old system is also being operated simultaneously as a standby. The old system will be decommissioned only after DGCA clears the new system.
‘’The automated system will be more useful at peak times, when there is a possibility of human error,’’ the officials said. Though the number of aircraft arriving or departing the airport is around 50, the ATC has a tough job managing the overflying flights.
‘’We have to control around 400 overflying flights to various destinations during the peak time, which falls in the early morning hours,’’ they said.
The system will also help the ATC staff to manage the flights leaving the control limits of the satellite airports better. The Thiruvananthapuram airport has seven satellite airports, including the Cochin International Airport, Karipur Airport and the airports at Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tuticorin and Agathy.
