Wearing out my shoes in Vancouver (I)

You didn't ask, but you're getting them anyway -- here are my pictures from my recent trip to Vancouver and Seattle. I must say that the trip was an interesting experience, as trips to other countries always are, but I returned unharmed and unscathed except for a yeast infection. But it was worth it.

Upon arrival in Vancouver, I learned three very important things very quickly:

1 -- Canadian television sucks. Frequently my boyfriend and I were reduced to watching shows about obnoxious people trying to decide whether to sell their houses or merely renovate them.

2 -- Pot smoke smells just as bad when people are smoking legally as it does when they smoke pot illegally.

3 -- In this marvelous and colorful tapestry we call humanity, the color that dominates all the others by a margin of 8 to 2 is brown. And it wears skinny jeans and trendy scarves. That was okay though because it made me, with a complexion that makes milk look swarthy, feel deliciously exotic.

Anyway, pictures:

We had an amazing view from our hotel room:

One thing that struck me about downtown Vancouver was the lack of historic architecture. There's some, sure, but not as much as you might expect to find... The city worked though, because they did not take the same route that some cities such as Charlotte did when they were busily eradicating their old buildings. Vancouver, even as it replaced old with new, built with the person in mind, not the person in an automobile. The result, in my experience at least, was a city that was gloriously alive though relentlessly modern.

Atop the Harbour Centre, my boyfriend and I discovered that we're irresistible to Japanese school tour groups. We were swarmed twice by schoolgirls wanting us to take their pictures, and once by a group of boys.

I believe this is what is known in popular parlance as a "shout-out."

Movie shoot. We saw another one later in the trip when we went to Gastown. Should you see someone in the background of a TV show or movie wearing a white shirt with a pattern of winter-dead trees on it, carrying a "Police Line Do Not Cross" messenger bag, that would be me.

Which style of Carolina BBQ, though? There are two -- western-style with a tomato-based sauce, and eastern-style, whose sauce is made of mustard and vinegar.

Vancouver is brought to you by the letter "W".

I know just enough French to get by, while my boyfriend is fluent in Spanish. I found the requirement that everything in Canada is to be printed in English and French to be interesting and a chance to brush up. This was our breakfast the morning we headed out to Lynn Valley.

Japanese tourists. We would see them repeatedly in the forest.

I told my boyfriend that I was waiting for this old lady to get across the bridge before I took a picture of it. She heard me. Oops.

Underpants.

This was a bit of a creepy thing to find in the deep woods.

A very interesting slug.
