Metrolinx selects Alstom as alternative light rail vehicle supplier
12 May 2017

CANADA: Greater Toronto & Hamilton Area transport authority Metrolinx has awarded Alstom a firm order to supply 61 Citadis Spirit light rail vehicles for C$529m. The order announced on May 12 includes options for more vehicles.

Alstom is to supply 17 vehicles for the Finch West LRT project, with the other 44 to be put into service on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line, which is due to open in 2021. Metrolinx ordered a fleet of Bombardier LRVs for Eglinton Crosstown in 2010, but subsequently launched legal proceedings against the supplier over what it claimed were a series of delays to production of these and LRVs allocated to other projects

I thought the local laws require them to put Bombardier at a priority. I guess the recent legal woes may have changed that.

I believe that Alstom is going to build an assembly plant in Toronto so that 27% wil be domestic manufacturing.

I'm glad they attempted to build something that's more than just functional. This is the best station on the TTC.

Hurontario light rail shortlist announced
07 Jun 2017

CANADA: Infrastructure Ontario and Greater Toronto transport agency Metrolinx have shortlisted three consortia for the contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hurontario Light Rail Transit project to the west of Toronto. Hitachi, Transdev, Keolis and RATP Dev are among the shortlisted bidders (below).

A Request for Qualifications was issued in October for a 20 km line to link Port Credit GO Station in Mississauga with the Gateway Terminal at Steeles Avenue in Brampton. This would have 22 stops, and the maintenance depot would be built at Highway 407. Construction is expected to start in 2018, with opening planned for 2022

Yes I believe so. It is a cost cutting measure.

I think TTC plans to cover those walls by floor to ceiling advertisements like this?

I wish TTC would cover the wall up with art installation similar to the one at Union Station, but it would cost more money

York University Subway Station

I think it's the nicest one among TTC newest subway stations. The expansion line will be completed by end of 2017, if I'm not mistaken.

Seems the station name is already installed on the bare concrete.

Feds back latest Toronto light rail line with $333M investment

The Finch West Light Rail project includes 18 stops in northwest Toronto; it's expected to begin carrying passengers in 2021

Quote:
Ottawa is backing a new Toronto transit project expected to get underway this year with a $333 million investment.

The Finch West Light Rail Transit project will span 11 kilometres at the northwest tip of the city and connect Humber College with the Toronto subway.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca were in Toronto to announce the new funding June 23. The federal government contribution adds to the $1.2 billion already allocated by the province.

The new Finch West LRT will replace existing bus service in northwest Toronto and run between the soon-to-open Finch West Subway Station and Humber College. It’s expected to include 16 surface stops as well as an underground interchange at Finch West Station and a below-grade terminus at Humber College.

The new LRT is slated to open in 2021.

Toronto gets a massive transit investment from the federal government

Quote:
In a statement released today, Mayor John Tory said Toronto is expected to receive, "$4.8 billion of Ontario’s $8.34-billion allocation from the Government of Canada for our transit network expansion plan, which includes the Relief Line, Smart Track, the Eglinton East LRT and Waterfront transit."

According to a news release from TTC Chair Josh Colle, Infrastucture Minister Amarjeet Sohi outlined in a letter a cost-sharing plan that said Toronto transit projects should receive one third of their funding from the province.

Colle's statement says the city will advocate for a 40-40-20 funding model that's split between all three levels of government.

Regardless, a nearly $5 billion investment seems like a huge boon for public transportation in the city.
