The "European" side of Greenland is so sparsely populated, too icy. I love this thread, btw.

Upernavik

It is a small town of 1.100 inabitants (thirteenth-largest town in Greenland) in northwestern Greenland, located on a small island of the same name 800 Km north of Artict Circle.

The only "forest" of Greenland is located in Qinngua valley, Tasermiut fiord in the south. In the rest of the country, there are pratically no trees. Here some pics of the Valley.

Excuse for going a little off topic but I love the photos of Greenland; would be very interesting place to visit.

In Upernarvik (I would assume no sun in the middle of winter), does the sky get light during the middle of the day such as orange, pink or light purple like in the last photo above, even if the sun never gets above the horizon, or is it just pitch black all day long?

Similarly, in the middle of summer and during the middle of the night (I would assume the sun stays above the horizon all day long but low), does the sky get orange, pink of dark purple that indicates any nightfall, or is the sky blue all night long?

It's like elsewhere (e.g. in Australia) - if the sun is low, it's bright, but not as much as at noon (it's as bright as elsewhere in the evening). If there's no sun, but it's close to the horizon, it's as bright/dark as elsewhere in the morning right before the sun rises.

Great pics, Satyricon84, that's a very atypical Greenland! Do you perhaps know the northernmost and the southernmost settlement in Greenland?

Even if the sun does not raise, there is a period of twilight. The following definitions are in a widespread use:
  • During the Civil Twilight, the altitude of the sun is -6 degrees or more. (The center of the sun is no more than 6 degrees below the horizon.) During the Civil Twilight, there is light enough to work outside.
  • During the Nautical Twilight, the altitude of the sun is -12 degrees or more. At the end of the Nautical Twilight, it is rather dark, and the horizon is not visible any more.
  • During the Astronomical Twilight, the altitude of the sun is -18 degrees or more. Normal people consider the the Astronomical Twilight being a darkness.
The duration of the twilight is much longer at the high latitudes than close to the equator.

The altitude of the sun at noon at the winter solstice day on the northern hemisphere is about 66.55 degrees minus the latitude. Upernavik lies on the latitude 72.78 degrees. Thus, at the noon of darkest day of the year, the altitude of the sun is about -6.2 degrees, and the Nautical Twilight applies. The Nautical twilight begins at 09:20 and end at 16:05. Thus, there are 6+ hours with some light.

Similarly, the minimum altitude of the sun at the midnight of the summer solstice day is about +6.2 degrees. The sky may be blue or coloured.

great thread, amazingly strange place!
i didn't think there were absolutely no roads connecting the towns, that's simply unimaginable in Europe. So what did people do before airplanes? Sledges?
Or they just don't go anywhere?

Also, you could show some people, or what they do over there? Like a pub or restaurant or more street scenes please?

Is there a nightclub in Nuuk? There must be something! I'd like to see some locals getting jiggy with it, lol

Sweden is a cold, desolete and distant place, but compared to Greenland it feels very civilized, even Iceland seems cosmopolitan compared to Greenland.

Will we ever see a motorway in Greenland ?

A great number of Greenlanders also live in mainland Denmark. Many of them have had some difficulties to assimilate in to the danish society, due to the difference in mentality.

The vehicles in Greenland is enduring a lot on the roads, the average "lifespan" must be much shorter than in mainland DK.

Well, the northernmost settlement in Greenland is Kap Harald Moltke (latitude 82°10' N) that's a former exploration base built 1972 and now uninhabitated. The northermost inhabitated settlment instead is Siorapaluk (latitude 77°47' N - less of 1400 Km far from North Pole) with a population of 68 inhabitants in 2010 (93 in 2006). It's the northernmost settlement in North America (if we don't consider meteorolological stations and scientific bases). It has an electrical power plant, direct satellite radio and TV-broadcasting, a well stocked store and telephone service. The settlement's school is combined with its church and a small public library. there aren't medical facilities, but settlement is visited regularly by a physician and a dentist. The Siorapaluk Heliport is the northernmost aerodrome in Greenland with scheduled civilian flights, served by Air Greenland.

Here some pics of Siorapaluk (Later I'll show the southernmost too)

The southernmost settlement in Greenland is Narsarmijit (also known as Narsaq Kujalleq or in danish Frederiksdal) (latitude 60°00′ N), founded in 1824 by Moravian missionaries located approximately 50 km north of Cape Farewell, the southern cape of Greenland. It has a population of 97 inhabitants in 2010 (123 in 2006) and It's served by Narsarmijit Helipor.

Here some pics of Narsarmijit

Sure there are pubs and restaurants. Alcoholism is one of the biggest problem in Greenland. I'll show you some pics later
