I was at a Spanish defence research facility earlier this week and the Spaniards are not impressed - some even talked of recognising the name Falkland Islands instead of Malvinas, and contributing troops to a new south atlantic task force!

OK I slightly exagerate, but people in Spain are not impressed.

Spain Stings Argentina Over Oil Company Nationalization

Spain said Friday that it would seek to restrict imports of biodiesel fuel from Argentina, its first retaliatory measure after the government in Buenos Aires decided to seize control of the assets there of Repsol YPF, the largest Spanish oil company.

Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, the deputy prime minister, said Spain would seek to use Spanish and European biofuel instead of that of Argentina, which is the biggest exporter of biofuel to Spain.

Madrid imports almost three-quarters of all its biofuel, with shipments from Argentina worth about €750 million, or $991 million, last year.
Repsol is planning to challenge the Argentine government before the international courts and seek at least $10.5 billion in compensation for the expropriation in what promises to be a lengthy legal battle.

Matthew Parish, a Geneva-based international arbitration partner at the law firm Holman Fenwick Willan, noted that Argentina was already the world’s biggest defaulter on investment arbitration awards.

The Spanish government has been studying what sanctions it could impose under the terms of a bilateral investment treaty signed with Argentina in 1991.

The Union(EU) is Argentina’s second-biggest export market after Brazil. The Union could, for instance, freeze ongoing talks about forming a free trade area with Argentina or suspend some trade concessions granted to the country.

On Friday, lawmakers from the European Parliament approved a resolution urging the European Commission to remove such concessions on Argentine exports.

Born and raised there. SDSU is my undergrad alma mater as well. I was also fortunate to spend the first 13 years of my naval career based there. It is a beautiful place; but the cost of living is outrageous. It's the downside of an average day time temperature of 72°F; everybody wants it, and is willing to pay for it. On a, slightly, more serious note, I recall a conversation with one of your countrymen, who worked for a British oil prospecting company. He maintained that the British just get better, and look healthier, the further we get from our island.

What was it Kipling said, "Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday Sun?" We manage to get even the most Presbyterian among you to exist pretty much year round in swim trunks, T-shirts, and "flip-flops!" Zinc Oxide is optional!

This is but one example; the Annual Old Mission Beach Athletic Club-sponsored "Over The Line Tournament" (OTL). It would take me too long to explain the genesis and purpose of the rather simple game of OTL, but suffice it to say that it is two weeks of alcohol-fueled, half-naked debauchery posing as an athletic contest. Oh, and did I mention it's a hell of a good time, too?



As far as paying dues for such life-long exposure; yeah, that's already happening to yours truly. Not a year goes by that I don't have some sort of scabrous-looking thing with a Latin name ending in "-oma" lopped, burned or frozen off of my hide. Even we so called "Black Irish" suffer from too much Sun.

I can attest to the fact that there are a lot of you over here from the UK and Ireland; and it's a growing demographic judging by the number of very traditional pubs that are operated by, and provide service to, expats from the British Isles.

As far as the way they look; well, the overall package is pretty good, but there are some things that Sun and sand just cannot remedy:
