Newport, Rhode Island

Newport has a population of around 26,000. It is aproximately 45 miles from Boston. Newport has a colonial past and became summer home for the nation's wealthiest families at the turn of the 20th century. They built magnificent mansions near the ocean that were used only during the summer. I didn't take many pictures of Newport's famed mansions. This is more about the town. I could do an entire thread on the mansions.

Chadoh, if you see this thread, watch for Commodore Perry. I had a little fun with him.

Forgive me. I had to have some fun with the photo. Bell bottoms, side burns. Commodore Perry is practicing his disco moves. Or hailing a cab:

Great pictures! I was in Newport a couple months ago as a quick detour en route to Cape Cod and it was truly a gem. Even with just walking around and taking some quick pictures where I could it took me an entire afternoon. You captured much of the city although between your pictures and what I saw it seems like there's still more to discover.

Very true! This thread doesn't begin to fully represent Newport. For instance, I didn't photograph the mansions. There are some mansions in this thread, but not THE mansions. It would take a lot of work to properly photograph the mansions. Many are behind walls, big lots, etc. If I had been alone, I would have taken the time. Peeked through gates & do whatever is necessary. But, since I was in Newport with hubby, I restrained myself. When I get into full picture-taking mode, I became an unpleasant companion. Sometimes, I have to put the camera down and pay attention to the human beings in my life.

Dwest - You are correct. It is a perfect place to spend a vacation.

This is the east coast american holiday destination of my dreams - along with Boston, of course, and upstate New York.

More top quality images. Love your style!
