The inhabitants of Porto call their urban rail system "metro", so that they can boast that they have an almost double metro system than Lisbon.

Actually they only have 7 kms of real metro. The rest is no more than a tramway with its own path, like in many German cities. Curiously enough, Germans also use the same term (U-Bahn) both for full-scale metros and hybrid systems.

Yes, there's often an inflational use of the term "metro".

The Metro Bits database takes that into account: Lisbon 41.0 km, Oporto 21.7 km length of full metro stretch.

A metro doesn't have to be underground, it just has to be grade separated, are there sections of the Athens Metro with level crossings?

No. Athens metro is fed by a third rail, so level crossings are impossible!

True, but there is a tram system in Athens very similar to Porto Metro right?

Athens tram is not similar to Porto metro. It is a pure tram system, with no underground sections.

These tracks with grass remind me of Athens tram a little bit:

oh please; the word metro is used in the USA to refer to a transit network, whether or not it contains any rail (not to mention light rail or tram). Thus, in Madison, WI they have a "metro" which is a bus-only system.

To call somebody "metro" means the person is metrosexual.

In china they call "light rail" anything that's an elevated transit line, even if it's really more like heavy rail.

Russian tourists show up at Metropolitan Museum in NYC thinking it's about rail transit. My friend thought it would be about the metropolitan area.

Open up any "metro section" of a US newspaper - don't think all the articles will be about subways!!!
