I don't see Precision doing that but maybe Air Tanzania once it stabilize. I think either airline do a feasibility study on the route to Khartoum via Dubai.

17th June 12
Qatar, Kenya airways starting regular flights to KIA
Guardian on Sunday Correspondent

Skies over Tanzania’s northern tourist circuit will see more flights as Qatar and Kenya Airways are both commencing flight services to the Kilimanjaro International Airport next month.

Qatar Airways will start daily flights from Doha to KIA on July 1, while Kenya Airways expects to follow suit the following day, to land tourists at the closest point to view northern circuit game and ecological attractions.

The launch of Qatar flights at KIA comes at the onset of the tourism high season. Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker said this week that the airline would serve KIA with an Airbus A320 via Nairobi.

Kenya Airways group managing director Titus Naikuni said KQ has added KIA to its regular destinations starting July 2, with six flights a week until September 30, rising to daily flights from October 1.

"Kilimanjaro is a strategic destination for the region owing to the vibrant tourism circuit in the hinterland including the Serengeti," said Naikuni.

Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO) director of finance and corporate services Bakari Murusuri said these lucrative deals implyan increased number of international arrivals at the airport. Arrivals have consistently grown by about 15 per cent annually since 2003, making the KIA currently serve about 650,000 passengers annually.

“Qatar and KQ Airways join other major airlines such as KLM, Edelweiss Air, Condor Air, Rwanda Air and Ethiopian Airlines to fly to the northern tourist circuit,” Murusuri explained.

Marco van de Kreeke, chief executive officer of KADCO, a company which runs KIA, said Qatar Airways will link Tanzania with the Middle East, India, China and other Asian destinations.

“Daily flights to Doha will stimulate growth and help KIA realize its mission of becoming the most ideal gateway to the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania,” he said, saying extension of flights to KIA was part of a wider effort, "We are happy because connections to Australia and New Zealand will also improve”.

Also tourists from Europe and America will have another option to reach Tanzania’s northern tourism circuit as Doha hub provides many connection opportunities to big capitals and cities around the world.

"For example, London which will be soon served from Doha by Qatar Airways five times a day is the biggest market source for KIA", Mr Kreeke noted. Qatar Airways comes in as a backdrop of KIA’s major repositioning with an eye to elevate the facility into a true tourists gateway, he remarked.

With increased traffic, demand for customer satisfaction, security concerns and growing competition, KADCO has found it imperative to benchmark itself with pace setting organizations, meeting and overcoming emerging challenges along the way, he said.

A $30 million transformation plan will see all runways, apron, taxiways and passenger lounge refurbished in a bid to offer holidaymakers a hassle-free trip to northern Tanzania’s tourist circuit.

Sirili Akko, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) executive officer, was upbeat on how the direct flight will considerably promote tourism and trade between Tanzania and Middle East.

“We believe regular flight services will significantly promote tourism business, especially leisure travel, conferences and exhibitions,” he said.

The Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) managing director Dr Aloyce Nzuki said Qatar Airways will find the decision to add a daily flight to KIA to be timely.

The 300 square km tourism stretch comprises the Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Arusha, Manyara and Tarangire national parks as well as the Ngorongoro conservation area.

Qatar Airways is adding a second flight destination for Tanzania, while also extending its passenger flights to other destinations in Iraq, Myanmar and Serbia.

Qatar Airways will also be introducing new freight services to Pakistan, Oman, South Africa and South Korea, the company management noted.

RwandAir, the national carrier, is to launch a new route to Mwanza in the Republic of United Tanzania in July.

The airline plans to operate three weekly flights on its Dash 8 making this its 14th destination.

“Flying to Mwanza will increase the number of passengers transiting through Kigali. Options for customers from Mwanza to travel to Dubai, Entebbe or Johannesburg are limited.

"RwandAir needs to position itself as a viable alternative to some real big players in the region. We can only achieve this by becoming a true network based airline,” John Mirenge, CEO RwandAir told Rwanda Today in an interview.

He said the airline has also increased its frequency to Johannesburg, South Africa due to demand.

“The more frequencies we offer, the more choice, convenience and flexibility we can offer,” Mr Mirenge said.

Currently, the airline has two new Boeing 737-800 that serve the Dubai, Lagos (Nigeria) and Johannesburg routes, expanding its fleet to seven aircrafts.

The airline plans to phase out the use of its 50-seater single cabin CRJ-200 as it grows its fleet with negotiations with Europe’s Airbus and Embraer, the Brazilian aerospace conglomerate, for future acquisition of aircraft.

“We have ordered two Bombardier CRJ aircraft and expressed interest in two more. These aircraft are going to serve regional routes like Entebbe, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam,” Mr Mirenge said.

Regional airlines including Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir and South African Airways (SAA) have over the past few months been seeking to increase their presence in Africa’s airspace.

Industry analysts say Africa should be the growth focus for RwandAir, despite the existence of strong regional airlines, since the market is not saturated.

The airline will provide the required linkage as a resident airline to the country’s planned new Bugesera airport.

Hai. Two more international airlines after Qatar that launched its maiden flight yesterday -- Turkish Airlines and Emirates Air -- plan to launch direct flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (Kia) following the rehabilitation and maintenance project at the facility, according to Natural Resources and Tourism minister Khamis Kagasheki.

The maintenance project was spearheaded by the Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (Kadco), a company that manages operations of the Kia and which has already secured a $30 million from a Netherlands-based firm, Orion Grand Facility in a bid to transform Kia into a fully-fledged tourist gateway. Speaking during the maiden launch of Qatar Airways Doha –Kilimanjaro route at Kia yesterday, Kagasheki said Kia will now get connections from the rest of the world which will help increase tourist inflow into the country as well as increase the country’s revenue earnings.

“We have unique tourist destinations that can attract more tourists in to the country. The good news is that we have respectable airline companies flying directly into the country that will help to connect us to the rest of the world,” he said.

Earlier the Transport minister Dr Harrison Mwakyembe speaking during the event said the airliner’s decision to vie for the Doha-Kilimanjaro route would be of great significance to the country’s economy.
The Kadco Board chairman Ambassador Hassan Gumbo Kibelloh said the company would provide five-star quality handling services.

“Our vision is not only to make Kia a competitive airport but we are also dedicated to environmental conservation,” he said. The Qatar Airways chief Commercial officer Marwan Koleilat during the occasion said the company’s launch of the Doha-Kilimanjaro route is commitment to providing world-class services adding that Kilimanjaro will now be connected to a variety of destinations across the country.Qatar Airways joins other major airlines such as KLM, Edelweiss air, Condor air and Ethiopian Airlines to fly to the northern located international airport.

FRESH INTEREST BY AIRLINES
Additional airlines eye Kilimanjaro after Qatar Airways entry

BY DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN UGANDA | JUL 29, 2012
(eTN) - Airline sources in Tanzania have indicated fresh interest by airlines in flying to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), following the successful market entry by Qatar Airways (QR) on July 25.

‘We know that Emirates and Turkish have been sniffing around after it was made public that QR will come to JRO in July. I think they see Qatar Airways come into East Africa in a big way, threatening their own growth plans, and they may now have to think of adding secondary airports besides the main hubs in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Entebbe. Qatar Airways has an advantage going into such places like JRO and next month to Mombasa and then Zanzibar, because they use a single aisle A320, which provides sufficient capacity when starting a new route, while Emirates, for instance, only has wide-body aircraft. With Turkish they could use their B737-800, but then first they need the aircraft to expand without putting into doubt their other plans for Africa to go this year to 30 and next year to 40 destinations.

“But Qatar Airways has rattled the market for sure. As you pointed out, they will by end of the year fly to 7 destinations in East Africa and then only Bujumbura will be missing from their list. That was a smart move, because people now fly from JRO and not need to go to Dar or Nairobi first, which makes it convenient and saves a lot of traveling time. There is a big market for such travel, and QR saw it first, so I give them my compliments,” said a regular aviation source from Dar es Salaam when asked to confirm talk that indeed other major airlines had renewed interest in adding a second gateway for Tanzania with Kilimanjaro, which would of course enormously benefit the tourism industry in the country with direct access to the famous northern circuit national parks.

Game opener some years ago was KLM, which is now flying daily to Kilimanjaro and also serves Dar es Salaam, leaving other airlines to connect via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam on regional or domestic flights to reach JRO, something Qatar Airways clearly saw as an open invitation to make this their second Tanzanian destination before later in the year Zanzibar will be added, making it three.

As far as i know Arusha Airport (in Kisongo Area) does not serve international flights at the moment and serves between 150,000 to 200,000 passengers, whereas KIA last year handled over 600,000 passengers (posed to reach a million this year with the introduction of more direct flights at high season that just started), therefore KIA (located in Hai District within Kilimanjaro bordering Arumeru) has an upper hand when it comes to international flights but Arusha has an upper hand when it comes to local flights destined to the Northern circuit! KIA only deals directly with those going to the Mt Kilimanjaro since it is closer from KIA!

Tanzania: U.S. Tycoon to Finance New Serengeti Airport
Tagged: Business, Construction, East Africa, External Relations, Investment, Tanzania, Transport, Travel, U.S., Canada and Africa
BY MUGINI JACOB, 13 AUGUST 2012
Comment
Serengeti — AN American tycoon, Mr. Paul Tudor Jones, has agreed to spend millions to finance the construction of an international airport in Serengeti district, Mara Region.

"Mr Jones has agreed and he has written to us a letter accepting to finance construction of the airport," Serengeti District Council Chairman, Mr John Ng'oina confirmed to this paper.

Mr Ng'oina had assured a full council meeting here on Friday that the American investor has agreed to finance construction of the much awaited airport that will transform Mugumu town in Serengeti to a tourist hub.

"We are now waiting completion of the master plan and the go ahead from the Ministry of Transport. After the construction, the airport will be handed over to Serengeti District Council", Mr Ng'oina said. He, however, did not disclose how much exactly the project will cost and what the tycoon intends to spend in implementing the same.

Mawala Trust Fund of Arusha has also agreed to assist in supporting preparation of the master plan, according to him. Construction of the airport will enable thousands of foreign tourists visiting Serengeti National Park to fly direct to Mugumu and later use vehicles to enter the park which is blessed with beautiful fauna and flora.

The project will play a significant role to boost revenues for the Serengeti District Council upon its completion, according to Serengeti officials. Mr Ng'oina challenged local investors, including Serengeti based business community, to start investing heavily on hospitality industry by setting up tourist lodges, among other things.

"We need top class hotels that will meet the demand of expected tourists who will be landing in Mugumu and our farmers should also strive to produce high quality products," he added. Many families and a public primary school had been relocated to pave way for the construction of the airport at Kyambahi ward a few kilometres from Mugumu town. Compensation money was also paid by the US investor a few years ago.

Serengeti District Commissioner, Cpt James Yamungu urged Serengeti residents to take advantage of the project and prepare to accommodate more tourists expected to visit the area. "We want Serengeti to be the major transit route of tourists visiting Serengeti National Park. Let us build nice hotels that will meet the demand of visitors", the DC said.

Mr Jones has already set up luxurious lodges that are operated by Singita Grumeti Reserves (SGR) in the area. They include Sasakwa, Farufaru, Sabora Tented Camp and Singita Explore Mobile Camp. Recently the lodges were named the best by Travel- Leisure Magazine of the United States for 2012 from a list of top 100 hotels in the world for the second time in a row.

Travel- Leisure Magazine is one of the world's most trusted magazines in tourism and travel industries. The USA billionaire is rated to be the leading investor on tourism and conservation industry in Western Serengeti. He is said to have fallen in love with the Serengeti eco-system. The government has already expressed its satisfaction with the lodges, citing global awards they have won in 2011 and 212.

"I was outside recently and it was indeed amazing to see Grumeti lodges being featured on popular televisions stations like CNN. This means that the lodges are marketing Tanzania", the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki, recently said during a tour of Serengeti district a few days ago.

Chinese contractor to expand Mwanza airport
By In2EastAfrica Reporter

The Tanzanian government has awarded contract to expand the Mwanza airport to a Chinese firm, the National Assembly was told. The firm, Beijing Construction Engineering Group, will carry out the work for over 100bn/-, Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe has said.

The Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe

He said that the government signed the contract in June this year and work is expected to start in October and to be completed in September 2014. Dr Mwakyembe was responding to a basic question from Richard Ndassa (Sumve -CCM) who sought to find out when the government will start construction work to expand the airport.

Dr Mwakyembe said the government through the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) has carried out expansion works on airports across the country depending on needs and availability of funds.

He said TAA continues to expand Mwanza airport to satisfy needs of passengers and planes as they continue to grow on a daily basis. Dr Mwakyembe said in 2007/08 TAA rehabilitated and expanded parking areas for planes to the level of tarmac at the airport. He said the parking area can now accommodate five Boeing 737 planes.

“I would like to inform the House that since July last year, Mwanza airport started providing 24 hours air services,” he explained. The expansion work to be carried out by the contractor from China will include building a modern passenger lounge that will accommodate one million passengers annually, elongate the runway by 500 metres and expand and rehabilitate the control tower, cargo and hangar buildings to accommodate more planes.

Responding to a supplementary question from Zitto Kabwe (Kigoma – Chadema) who wanted to know if the government will support efforts to make it an international airport, Dr Mwakyembe said the government will fully support such efforts aimed at boosting tourism in the country.

“The importance of Mwanza airport is recognized by the government, and we will definitely support efforts to make it international,” he said
