Dinagyang '07 to feature international ice show

Ilonggos will now have the chance to see at close range an international ice show with performers from other countries as it will be one of the main features of the Dinagyang Festival next year.

Businessman Lee Chuan, president of the Dinagyang Foundation, said the festival will bring for the first time, an international holiday on ice show to this city.

"This will add color to the Dinagyang celebration on January 2007 as Ilonggos will see the ice spectacle brought by the promoters here for the first time to perform outside Metro Manila," Chuan said.

Early reports said the P21-million ice show will perform first at the Araneta Center in Quezon City before going to Iloilo City for the Visayas performance one week before the Dinagyang culminating events.

Chuan said the Visayans, especially Ilonggos in Panay and Negros, are dying to see the ice show rated as the most spectacular and grandest show on earth.

Dinagyang executive director Ben Jimena said official mascot 'Dagoy' will be going around the country promoting the Dinagyang in several Philippine cities starting December.

Other activities include the fluvial procession to be made into a more extensive major Dinagyang event and the promotion of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of the United National Development Programme.

Dinagyang Festival was selected recently by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) as the top tourism event in the country.

"The event has evolved through the years as a living festival that takes new things in strides as it invents, rather blends tradition with the contemporary and evolving into something different, something new, yet maintaining its inner soul and real essence," Jimena said.

Dinagyang Pamukaw staged Dec. 16th

The downtown streets of Iloilo City once again reverberated with the familiar rhythmic beating of drums as 20 participating tribes paraded and danced in the streets of the city last December 16th for the traditional Pamukaw of the Dinagyang Festival 2007. The tribes gyrated and danced from the Provincial Capitol to the Freedom Grandstand here, showing metro residents a sample of their forthcoming repertoire. Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and officials of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation led by president Lee Chuan and executive director Ben Jimena, were on hand to lead the pamukaw, which literally means to rouse the residents and everyone to inform that the Dinagyang Festival is coming. The 2007 festival highpoints will be on January 27th and 28th, when the Kasadyahan and the Ati-atihan competitions unfold. However, there will be various other activities during the interim, the search for Miss Dinagyang 2007 and the opening salvo on January 19th. The pamukaw was highlighted with the banging of the big drum by Vice-mayor Guillermo de la Llana in behalf of Mayor Jerry Treñas, to signify the start of the Dinagyang season. The presentation elicited delight and smiles from both young and old who turned out in droves at the Freedom Grandstand to watch the 20 tribes rattle off short, impromptu performances. Other religious highlights of the Festival include opening salvo walk with Sr. Sto. Niño January 17th around the nine barangays; the Kasadyahan opening salvo on the January 19th; the re-enactment of the first arrival of the image of Sr. Sto. Niño the Basilica in Cebu also on the 19th; and the thanksgiving mass with all officials and participants of the 2007 Dinagyang Festival on the 29th. (PIO)

ADB cites Dinagyang Festival

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas recently announced that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has named the world-renowned Dinagyang Festival as one of the best practices in illustrating an effective public-private partnership in ensuring a successful major tourism annual event. Treñas said that the ADB included Iloilo City and the city's growth through the years in its two books: "Urbanization and Sustainability in Asia (Good Practice Approaches in Urban Region Development)" and "Managing Asian Cities." The two books showed the growth of emerging major cities in Asia and some of the best practices implemented within their respective areas. "I am extremely happy with the ADB recognition which is making things happen in Iloilo City," Treñas said. "Dinagyang Festival does not only signify performance of dancing tribes but, more specifically, the close cooperation and solidarity of all stakeholders. It is the festival of all stakeholders and a concrete partnership between the private sector and local government unit," the mayor added. The ADB book identifies the Dinagyang as having provided a lot of benefits to Iloilo, citing that it is "showcasing the Ilonggo's culture of excellence; unifying the community to work for the common good; creating goodwill for the city by providing entertainment to tourists and visitors; promoting international friendship; becoming a medium for the local arts to exhibit their talents; and has nurtured a workable partnership between the government, the church and the private sector." The book further stated that the festival has been a significant factor in bringing more jobs to Ilonggos and increasing the business sector's income. It has likewise accelerated investments in Iloilo City and has instilled the value of discipline among the members of the community. With this latest citation, Treñas congratulated all stakeholders and attributed the success to all Ilonggos for their hard work and cooperation. (PIO)

Fewer warriors join Dinagyang '07

LESS dancers and drummers have signed up for Dinagyang 2007.

This was revealed by Ben Jimena, executive director of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc.

He cited that the villages could no longer tap the youth to join them because they opted to join in their school tribes.

This information was relayed to him by the Association of Tribes of Iloilo (ATI).

Accommodations

Meanwhile, hotel rooms are already fully booked for the festival, according to a report over Aksyon Radyo Thursday.

In fact, some tourists have booked rooms in Bacolod City, just to avail of an accommodation. Iloilo City is only an hour's ferry ride from Bacolod.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas encouraged Ilonggos that if ever they have available rooms at home, they should let their guests stay there instead of hotels.

I suggest that aside from booking hotels in Bacolod, you can also book hotels in nearby city of Roxas (2 hour drive from Iloilo City) and resorts in Iloilo and Guimaras provinces. There's a lot of resort inns lining the stretch of Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal and Miag-ao in the south, and Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas in Central towns. Also, Jordan and Buenavista in Guimaras have few more mini-hotels or inns available.

Pangita na venue dira Chymera. The Dinagyang forumers will be having their meet as well pero hasta subong wala man gihapon date pero may venue na sila. Try Mussee ugaling kay kalayo gid sa ciudad. Ano nga oras matapos ang Ati Contest? Mga after lunch na ano?

you mean longer performance time? Actually, maayo ina ang plan ni Mr Jimena to taper down the number of competing tribes. More than 20 is too much already. Makapoy man magtan-aw. I think 15 tribes during Ati Contest is ideal number na siguro.
