Bengal to get two more hospitals

KOLKATA: By the end of 2013, Devi Shetty's hospital chain Narayana Hrudayalaya will add two more hospitals in Bengal - one each in Siliguri and Bolpur.

The hospital chain has already made its presence felt in the state with two medical facilities - Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Kolkata and a tie-up with IQ City Health & Knowledge Campus in Durgapur.

"For the Siliguri project, we are in the final stage of getting the building plan sanctioned, while the Bolpur project is in an advanced stage of planning and discussion," said Devi Shetty on Saturday.

Construction of the Siliguri project will start by August 2012 and it will involve an investment of Rs 16 crore. Investment for the Bolpur project will be Rs 15 crore.

Emphasizing the need for a proper healthcare system in the country, Shetty said: "We need one million doctors, two million nurses and three million beds to address the need of proper healthcare in the country. Bu we are far away from that target." Shetty also predicted that the cost of healthcare will decline significantly with time.

In July 2011, Shetty had met chief minister Mamata Banerjee and had proposed to set up more hospitals in rural Bengal with the state government. Asked about progress of the plan, he said: "They (state government) are moving briskly. But it is going to take time." He added that like all state governments, the Bengal government lacked the technical knowhow to set up hospitals in partnership with the private sector.

Regarding fire safety norms in hospitals, Shetty said it was one of the most important things that hospital authorities needed to ponder over. "We are extremely cautious about fire safety."

The hospital chain is going to manage and run the hospital in the IQ City Health & Knowledge Campus, said Bipin Vohra of SPS group, a promoter of IQ City.

Sanjay Jhunjhunwala of Mani Group, another promoter of IQ City, said the first phase of the 50 acre hospital and medical college project will be over by 2012-end. "It would entail an investment of Rs 450-500 crore. The second phase will come up in the next three years depending on the prospect of the first phase."

We need people like Devi Shetty to come in and put up/ manage hospitals in Bengal. Only then quality healthcare at affordable price can be provided.

The cancer hospital of the Tatas in New Town will have its second wing with 250 beds on an adjoining plot and a research hub nearby in around two years.

The Tata Translational Cancer Research Centre will come up on a two-acre plot in the township, barely a kilometre from the hospital, the Tata Medical Center.

“Hidco (the implementing agency of New Town) has allotted the plot for the research hub. We hope it will be operational by the end of 2014 and the new wing towards the beginning of that year,” said Mammen Chandy, the director of the Tata Medical Center.

The second wing, to come up in a six-storeyed building with two basements, will house a centre of excellence for gastroenteric cancer. “The wing will be spread across 300,000 sq ft on the same campus as the existing one. The two buildings will be linked,” said Chandy.

You are right. They seem to have four units as per the website, Sheoraphuli, Barrackpore, Ghoshipara and Durgapur.

The Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to set up nearly 35 super-specialty hospitals on the Public Private Partnership Model (PPP) is yet to evoke any response from private players.

In the first phase, super-specialty hospitals are to be set up in backward areas, for which 13 places in various districts have been identified. Those places include Jhargram in West Midnapore, Nandigram in East Midnapore, Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, Basirhat in North 24 Parganas, Jangipur in Murshidabad, Rampurhat in Birbhum, Chanchol in Malda, Raiganj, Balurghat, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

It was on April 24, 2012 that the state health department, which is under Mamata, issued an advertisement inviting expressions of interest from private players for operation and management of high-end diagnostic imaging facilities and dialysis services at some of the hospitals to be set through PPP. No private player respondedtill the last date of submission of bids on May 2.

Earlier, the authorities had planned to sell off two plots of 2 acre each for setting up a trauma centre and a geriatric care centre. The authorities had received applications but the applicants did not qualify for bidding.

So why are the authorities not getting proper applicants? One would think private sector players would be interested.

Hopefully this 7-8 acre hub will get some good hospital chains.

Kolkata/Bangalore: Medica Synergie,one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery providers in eastern India,is forming a 50:50 joint venture with Bangalore-based cancer care player HealthCare Global (HCG) Enterprises to set up a cancer hospital in Kolkata.
Medica Group,which is co-owned by a group of professionals and ICICI Venture,will be investing Rs 1,800 crore in the cancer hospital,said its chairman Alok Roy.The cancer care chain will manage the hospital,while Medica will invest in setting up the facility.
Dr B S Ajai Kumar told TOI that,We have tied up with Medica to offer oncology services in Kolkata and across eastern parts of the country.As of now we are not looking at a merger.
Medica Superspecialty Hospital,a wholly-owned unit of Medica Synergie,is a tertiary care hospital with state-of-the-art facilities in cardiology and cardiac surgery,neurology and neurosurgery,orthopaedics,joints and spine treatment and provides a host of other support services.Medica Superspecialty Hospital will serve as the hub for our smaller hospitals in Siliguri,Asansol and various others in the northeast.
Some time back,IDFC Private Equity has exited from its investment in HCGand existing investors PremjiInvest and Milestone Religare have bought out IDFC's 20% stake worth around $30 million.HCG has been trying to get fresh investors and General Atlantic and India Value Fund were in the fray but got stuck mid way on valuation issue.
Currently,Milestone Religare,PremjiInvest and Evolvence are the three key investors in HCG,though only the first two have participated in buying out IDFC stake.The investors will also make some fresh investments for hospital expansion through a rights issue soon.
