In Hamilton there be decay! One of my fave locations in the area is the old Firestone plant. Quite a large place to explore with a great old boiler house and lil odds and ends to find around..

These shots are from a lesser known location here in Toronto. They used to deal in fluids of all kinds... Industrial process lubricants including hydraulic fluids, lubricating oils, rust preventatives, quenching fluids, cutting fluids, coolants, industrial cleaners, drawing and forming lubricants. It now sits lonely, awaiting a new owner.

Time to head out of town, wayyyy out of town. On a rather chilly day, a group of us got together to head to prison. We left Toronto nice and early on what started out as a nice clear day. By the time we got to Jones Falls lock on the Rideau lock system it was snowing. It was not the best for driving but it made the area quite beautiful.

A weird concept getting in to a prison, kind of the complete opposite of what most people want to do. The prison opened in 1947 and closed in Jan 2004. Being fairly far out there has kept it fairly free of graffiti which was a refreshing change.

After being in prison, I don't know why anyone would want to end up in one, it does not seem like the nicest of places to spend part of your life.

Cheers,
Zen

One thing I do every year is go camping. In the spring I do a solo trip, usually to the interior ofAlgonquin Park. During the summer and fall I try to get out at least 2-3 more times, with the wife or by myself. In Aug, my wife was still pregnant with our lil one, so I got to go to Chutes Provincial Park with just me and my pooch Violet. Chutes is about an hr west of Sudbury in the town of Massey. The drive up is scenic and there are places to check out a long the way, here's some northern abandonments..

This is an old nickel refinery that is just sitting alone. It is on a property though that is active and therefore very hard to get in to, return trip needed!

I don't know how you do it, Zens! You are a far braver adventurer than I! I can't even bring myself to step in the driveways of big houses to get a better photo!!
I'm afraid I'd make a lousy explorer.....

Been doing it for quite a long time now and I gets I am just used to it..once you get one it starts to get easier Here's a couple from a recent outing. As much as I appreciate great art work in abandonments, I don't really like seeing taggers in a place that is being converted to artist studios.

As hinted in one of my other threads, I got back in to one of my favourite spots in the city. The hotel itself was built for George Gooderham and opened way back in 1903. In 1921 the Crystal Ballroom was added atop the hotel and was one of the it spots of the city for years, until, in the 1950's, stricter fire codes shut it down. It has been sitting basically vacant since, with the odd Doors Open event or when it was used for fly fishing practices.

It is basically empty with a few small touches left, yet even in this state you can still picture the opulence that once was.

Starting in the Crystal Ballroom itself...

Superb pictures!! I wonder how they are going to incorporate it into the new hotel/condominium conversion that the hotel is currently undergoing? It could brush up quite beautifully.
