Bergamo, Italy

Bergamo is located about 40km East from Milan and can be reached by train or via A4 Autostrada (or an ordinary toll-free road if you want).

It is probably not a very well known city and those who know it probably heard of it only because they use Ryanair to fly in Europe because Bergamo happens to be one of the Ryanair bases in Italy. I thought it was some boring and unexciting airport town as it usually is... surpsiringly Bergamo was nothing like it. It's a very attractive and pleasant town.

The key attraction in Bergamo is the old town (Citta Alta) located on a rather steep hill. A very picturesque and fascinating sight.

Bergamo may be less known to outsiders, but to Italians it's considered quite a classy town, one of the preferred locations for the cognoscenti to get away from all the tourists and riff-raff. There's quite a famous cafe in the main piazza of the citta alta, which I forget the name of now.

Nice pics, show us more if you can.

Italy is filled with fantastic and beautiful places, more so than any other country in Europe I reckon. Cool shots!

I have been there a few years ago. It's really a beautiful city. Unfortunately I think many people miss the old town, since they only go to the airport, that has cheaper flights then Milan.

I think Italy simply has too many beautiful and charming cities, hence Bergamo does not get too much fame... I mean Milan is next door and Verona is not too far away too. Those two suck up all tourists. But there is a good thing about it. If you want a lovely, pretty and romantic town without too many tourists then it's a good option to spend a weekend. And it costs just a couple of Euros to get there from the airport... if you're really short of cash and/or adventurous (or simply want to maintain your shape ) you can literally WALK from the airport to the Old Town because it's less than 5km away.
