I found some photos I took of Haberfield in inner-western Sydney. The area is known for its high concentration of Italians, and as mentioned previously, it along with Five Dock, another very pleasant area, could be today, what Leichhardt once was.

Quote:
Demographics
According to the 2001 census, Haberfield had around 6,800 residents with a very strong Italian component, 30% speaking Italian at home...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haberfi...ew_South_Wales

Haberfield is a Heritage Conservation Area. protecting its architectural and garden suburb character.

Quote:
The Federation Suburb
Haberfield was established as an estate in 1901, the year of Australia's Federation. It was built following the overseas Garden Estate movement, which was a reaction to closer, 'insanitary' settlements of the earlier suburbs. When establishing the estate, Richard Stanton used the slogan "Slum-less. Lane-less. Pub-less." This indicated that he was designing a 'genteel', residential suburb of free standing brick houses which did not need back lanes because every house was sewered.

The Architecture
Each house in Haberfield was an architect-designed 'detached' double-brick house i.e no terraces, on its own block of land of typically, 50' x 150' (15 m x 45 m). More than 700 of the houses were designed by the same architect, J. Spencer-Stansfield. No two houses are alike, although there are many common themes throughout the suburb. The roofs were either slate or the distinctive orange, unglazed Marseilles tiles. All had front verandahs although some have since been converted into extra rooms. Many feature ornate timber details, leadlight windows and distinctive tile patterns on verandahs and in bathrooms.

The Streets
The first few streets in Haberfield were given names of the members of the first Federal Cabinet, viz. Barton, Kingston, Forrest, Turner, Deakin, and Dickson. The whole suburb was developed by the 1920's. For more details, look here

Status
Today, Haberfield is on the Register of the National Estate. Haberfield was the first suburb recognised as a Heritage Conservation Area. This means that all new buildings, or external alterations to existing buildings, must be in keeping with the character of the suburb.

A few houses. These are typical and not necessarily the best examples.

There are also some 'mediterranean-type' houses that are not in keeping with the character of the area. However they have their place and own story, and of course can be renovated or put down to suit the area.

The streets are lined with mature trees.

Chinatown, Brisbane. Not particularly authentic, but a nice place to have lunch nonetheless.

Brisbane

Brisbane's major ethnic enclaves are:
- The Valley (Chinese - but also there are Italian, Thai, Filipino, Indian, and Korean comminties there)
- Sunnybank (Chinese/Taiwanese - but also Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Vietnamese)
- Inala/Darra (Vietnamese)
- Moorooka (Sudanese, Ethiopian and also Eritrean and Somali)
- West End (Vietnamese, Greek).
That said, some other suburbs have a very multiculral feel:
- Wooloongabba (Indian, Russian, Latin American, Serbian, Filipono)
- Stones Corner (Afghan, Indian, former Yugoslavia)
- City (Korean)
- Nundah (Myanmar minority refugees, Cambodian)
- Aspley (Indian, Chinese, Filipino)
- Annerley (Sudanese, Ethipian)
- Lutwyche (Italian)
- New Farm (Italian)
- Goodna (Samoan)
- Woodridge (Afghan, African mix, Pacific islander mix)
- Eight Mile Plains (Korean)
There also many assimilated communites such as Brits, Irish, Dutch, German, South Africans, New Zealanders, as well a dispersed communites with quite a few numbers such as El Salvadorians, Bangladeshis, Colombians, Spanish and Polish.
I am sure I have missed quite a few, but this has come from my experience of eating about and also through my work.
