✈ | LO*/K2* | LOT Polish Airlines

I haven't found any thread about LOT here. Some news below:

Quote:

LOT returns to four continents
Published by Ozgur Tore
Monday, 24 May 2010

During a press conference held at LOT's headquarters on 20 May, 2010 the company had summarized its activities in 2009.
LOT's net result was -168 mln PLN, which represents a significant improvement in relation to the large losses that the carrier incurred in 2008. The airline gained new passengers, closed the distance with its competition and extended its route network to more continents. The Polish air carrier was one of only a few which was able to carry more passengers than in the previous year and remains a leader on the marketplace. For the first time since 2003, when LOT began to systematically lose market share, the carrier was able to reverse this negative trend.

2009 was the most difficult year in the history of the aviation industry. Traditional airlines in the European market were particularly hard hit by the recession. Carriers noted a distinct drop in the number of passengers in business class, which coincided with an unprecedented rise in the cost of aviation fuel. The decided majority of airlines were unable to achieve a positive financial result from their basic operations, and in consequence decided to initiate restructuring processes and institute cost cuts.

Lot Polish Airlines was one of only a few which was able to carry more passengers than in the previous year, and remains a leader on the marketplace. That trend held up in the first quarter of 2010, when LOT dynamically increased the number of passengers on all of its key routes. On the Polish market, LOT posted a 17% gain, while all air carriers operating on the same market achieved a combined increase of 5%.

For the first time since 2003, when LOT began to systematically lose market share, the carrier was able to reverse this negative trend. LOT's gradual recovery of market position was possible thanks to the intensive efforts to improve both the quality of the product and pricing, effective marking campaigns, and improved communication with passengers.

The active battle for passengers combined with optimisation of costs allowed the improvement of the financial result in comparison to the heavy losses that the carrier incurred in 2008, despite negative market trends. The net result for 2009 was -168 mln PLN.

"This result represents a great success. It is important to remember the terrible situation that the company found itself in at the beginning of 2009 and the result that 2008 brought," said Sebastian Mikosz, President the Board of Lot Polish Airlines. "We can now look to the future with optimism. We are gaining market share, and will continue to win over new passengers," he added.

The financial situation of Lot Polish Airlines and its subsidiaries in 2009 improved thanks to successful restructuring throughout the capital group. The carrier introduced cost cutting measures and savings in all of its main areas, among others by initiating effective changes in its fleet, reducing fuel costs, centralising purchasing, cost optimisation of products and sales, restructuring of employment and separation of the Hangar Services company LOT AMS.

The unprofitable companies in the LOT Group, LOT Ground Services and Centralwings, were liquidated. In their place, the profitable and growing companies LOT Services and LOT Charters were introduced, which since June of 2009 have already carried 450 thousand passengers. Investments were made in the remaining companies investments and programs designed to improve competitiveness were implemented. Thanks to the process of restructuring debts and assets, the company was able to stabilize the financial situation and obtain financing for the purchase of new aircraft.

In 2010 the company entered a decisive period of changes, restructuring processes and expansion to new markets. The most meaningful for the company is the development of the route network and modernization of the fleet. Before the end of the year, LOT will open up ten new routes, including connections to Hanoi, Cairo, and Damascus. With these new connections the Polish carrier's network will include four continents. The process of replacing the fleet has already begun - Embraer 145 are being replaced with Embraer 170 and 175 aircraft, and they will be joined shortly by the Embraer 190, and then the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Lot Polish Airlines to order 20 new short-range planes

Source (sorry I could only find it in Polish):

http://biznes.gazetaprawna.pl/artyku..._mln_zl.html,2

Basically the article says that Lot will choose between Bombardier's Q400 NextGen and the newest ATR 600 series.

New Livery for Lot 787

Lot will be the first European airline to receive the new Boeing 787's and here are some renderings of potential new liveries for the new aircraft. As of right now it looks like the new livery will only be for the 787 and the rest of the fleet will remain the same.

In days of cutting costs down ( excessive paint costs money and puts extra weight on a plane ) I seriously doubt in a livery change.

That's why it's only the new 787's that are being talked about. They have to paint them one way or another and the images I posted are propositions for only the 787's.

Lufthansa wants to buy LOT?
30.09.2010 13:38

It has been reported that Lufthansa’s future boss, Christoph Franz has his eyes on LOT Polish Airlines.

The German Süddeutsche Zeitung daily quotes Franz – currently deputy chairman of the Lufthansa board – as saying that even though he is not set to take the leadership position until January next year, one of his priorities will be buy the Polish state airline.

Christoph Franz announced in the daily that Lefthansa is to enter talks with the Polish government next year when privatisation talks are billed on the airline’s future. “This is a change in LOT’s ownership structure which be cannot ignored,” Franz says.

Lufthansa is not only eyeing up LOT in a possible takeover bid. SAS Scandinavian Airlines are also reported to be for sale, with Süddeutsche Zeitung commenting that both LOT and SAS have been long considered as potential partners for Lufthansa.

In recent years, the German carrier has taken over Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and British Midland (BMI). (jb)

Bullshit. There are no plans of changing the scheme. Disgusting design, IMHO

Anyone have any opinion or guess on potential anti-trust issues facing Lufthansa from the EU if they proceed to try and buy a sizable chunk of LOT? With Austrian and Swiss already (and possibly SAS) they have a pretty firm grip on the eastern side of Europe.

BART et al: As different livery concepts are being discussed, I threw in one of my own. Didn't mean to infer anything else and should have perhaps been more clear --- but your humble opinion is noted.
