So Jat has a old and sort of new strategy which is to link them with BEG and take it from there. Jat airways already have strong presence in Macedonia and Montenegro. I just think it's too early for us in Serbia to merge with the rest of airlines from the old country. Since visas were removed in 2009, Belgrade airport has been booming and developing very nicely. Jat is not in goodshape, but that's due to 20 year old isolation and embargo. They are just starting to make use of their B733. During the embargo, these airplanes were simply too big to operate, and there is ten of them.

Not that I want to take away anything from Slovenia and Croatia, but I think their airports have reached their potential. On top of that, Slovenians use Vienna/Venice and that's about it. I don't see how we can merge as one airline. The reality is that Star alliance has fragmented this market with their monopoly, and the damage is done. Lufthansa is dominating this region by scooping up the transit passengers, and that's about it.
I can't see it happening without a major reduction of the total number of flights. But that will also be the case without a big merger, the different countries are just too small to all have a national airlines.

It could be an option when several of the airlines have collapsed. It could also be bigger, have 1 big Balkan airline that also serves Albania, Bulgaria or even Greece. But even then it will be hard for the competition.

My relative basically says it's the same time frame as driving to Vienna Airport from Zagreb with out the hastle. That's if your flying Emirates with out the connection from ZAG.
Oh tell me about it. I think they got the same thing in Belgrade. There is like two or three busses a day that take you to Budapest airport. That's how Budapest stole the traffic from Northern Serbia. As result, the local government completed the motorway to Hungarian border this year. Now we are starting to see some old pax from SFRJ days head back to BEG airport.

Than again, you need to look at the fares as well. If you are flying to Asia or Australia, BEG will be cheaper as well. I would include North America as well because I always talk to my travel agent about it here in Toronto. FlyDubai is doing okay, but I think Lufthansa lowered the fares in order to compete with two stopovers via Munchen/Singapore.

Bump...

I've shrunk this thread and restored its original name, the LOT Polish Airlines thread. That way, less confusion can be found in posting discussions and images from Poland's national carrier.

WARSAW: Indian travelers to Europe will soon have more choice. Poland's state-owned LOT airline is going to link Warsaw to Delhi early next year with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

"There are a lot of Polish companies in India as well as a strong Indian business community in Poland. There has been a demand from both these groups for a long time that we fly to India. We have plans to fly to Delhi next year. The question is not if but when and the decision will be taken by the end of this year," LOT CEO Sebastian Mikosz told TOI here.

With a relatively small fleet that is at present under 50 aircraft, eastern Europe-based LOT could have either chosen Delhi or Mumbai and has opted for the former. The Polish airline, which used to fly to Delhi earlier but stopped some years ago, is relying on its Star Alliance partner — Air India — to provide good connectivity to its flyers once they are in India as well as to have a good schedule in Delhi.

As his airline's USP, Mikosz promises faster connections within Europe to people flying from Delhi to Warsaw. "The big hubs in Europe offer connecting time of one to two hours. Warsaw is a niche airport and we will provide connection (within Europe) in 40 minutes to an hour. Warsaw is just six hours' flying time from Delhi. That is going to be our key advantage," he said, while reiterating that LOT's India flights will be in "close partnership" with AI.

LOT will be latest addition to the long list of European carriers that fly to India. This includes marquee names like Lufthansa, British Airways, Swiss, Austrian, Air France-KLM, Turkish and Finnair. Star Alliance is trying to get the flight schedules of its member airlines flying into India aligned as closely with AI as possible. The idea: offer India connection to incoming passengers as well as have AI flights fly into metros at times closer to Star airlines' departures from there.

This is part of Star Alliance strategy to take on the unrelenting challenge posed by Gulf carriers.

I don't think anyone mentioned here that LOT also announced the addition of Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok to its long haul network

Additional three long haul routes will be announced this autumn, looks like Delhi will be one of them.

Fleet growth will be announced by the end of the year as well. Wide body plans include 2 additional 787 next year as well as an order of 6-8 787-9 or 8 OR Airbus 330 Neo.

The carrier's growth plans until 2020 are to double in size (fleet, route network).

Some news

LOT ranks among most punctual airlines in the world

LOT ranked among top ten most punctual airlines in the world in a prestigious ranking. It also ranked 4th among the airlines in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Over 88% of LOT’s take-offs and landings were on time!

The assessment pertained to 2015. LOT ranked as the 10th airline in the world and the 4th airline in Europe, Middle East and Africa, keeping ahead of many large and leading aircraft operators, both traditional and so-called low-cost carriers. In the OAS ranking data were analyzed in terms of the punctuality of take-offs and landings of the majority of airlines all over the world. Scoring 88.88% LOT ranked among top ten operators.

“Taking into account the fact that we perform over 200 aircraft operations daily almost all over Europe, as well as operate long-distance flights to USA, Canada and China and in winter we offer charter flight service to, for example, Mexico or Thailand, such ranking is an excellent result”, says Wiesław Jedynak, Director of LOT Flight Operations. “We are reliable and efficient in our operations thanks to which our passengers can always rely on us”, adds captain Jedynak.

LOT’s intensive growth has commenced and the company intends to remain in the lead. Since the beginning of 2016 LOT’s aircrafts have had new destinations: Barcelona, Zurich, Zagreb, Dusseldorf, Chisinau, Belgrade and Yerevan. More new destinations are going to be launched soon.

13 January will mark the first flight to Tokyo from the Warsaw Chopin Airport (LOT’s hub in Warsaw).

Polish air carrier LOT has launched a new connection with Tokyo featuring their Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The first of three weekly flights to Tokyo took off from Warsaw at 3 p.m. CET on Wednesday, with an expected flight duration of 10.5 hours. The airline hopes the new connection will benefit many aspects of the economy. Marcin Celejewski, Director of LOT, said that he believes this flight will encourage Polish-Japanese partnerships in business. As far as tourism is concerned, there has been a steady increase of visitors from Japan and other countries in the region of late. The is the first long-range flight after the restructuring of LOT and if it proves to be successful, the company may add another long-range flight this year to Seoul, South Korea.

Any news on LOT's 7th and 8th Dreamliners? Are they being assembled already?

Also, soon we can expect LOT's announcement regarding additional 3 787s being ordered. This time it will be the B 787-900

Can't wait to see that bird in LOTs colors.

SP-LRG should be assembled in early February, SP-LRH around three weeks later.

Polish airline LOT sets passenger record

29.11.2016 09:32

Poland's LOT airline carried five million passengers in the first 11 months of the year, setting a new record.

The national carrier launched 23 new destinations in 2016, including connections to Tokyo and Seoul.

“2016 is not over yet, and [LOT] has already set a record in its 87-year history, carrying 5,000,000 passengers who chose us in the first 11 months of the year,” LOT spokesman Adrian Kubicki was quoted as saying by the PAP news agency.

LOT forecasts that by the end of 2016, the number of passengers will be 5.5 million passengers. Last year, the figure was four million.

Founded in 1929, LOT is one of the world's oldest airlines. (rg/pk)
