now that Waitrose could be good.. Can't think of any other 'niche' retailers big enough other than possibly M&S food. Either way it'll provide alternative competition to the future Tesco Metro and the new Morrisons.. By the way construction on this will be start very, very, soon.. Possibly in a couple of weeks.

More likely in Feb, there will be a 6 week public consultation on the app first.

Wasn't the tesco downsize part of condition of having Bristol street store. If they've pulled that I wonder what the plan is.

Seems a tenent has been found and this is a goer!!!
Seven signs StayWell in Brum Lisa Pilkington 09/01/2012 13:05 Investment company Seven Capital has landed Australian hotel management firm StayWell Group for its £100m redevelopment of the outdated Auchinleck House on Birmingham's Broad Street. The hotel group hopes to make its European debut at the scheme as plans to transform the 102,257 sq ft former office tower into a four-star, 300-bedroom hotel, go before Birmingham council planners on Thursday. Officers are minded to approve the scheme. Seven is hoping to take advantage of tax benefits via the government's Business Premises Regeneration Allowance initiative. To do this, permission will need to be in place by March. Seven acquired the 2.3 acre freehold of Auchinleck House and the neighbouring Fiveways Shopping Centre site in October last year. It plans a 475,000 sq ft redevelopment of the entire site. Auchinleck House will also comprise an ancillary restaurant, meeting rooms and fitness suite. Two planning applications have been submitted. The first is for the redevelopment of Auchinleck House and the second will be for the balance of the site. The application for the latter was submitted on 16 December and is also due to be reviewed on Thursday. The site will house a 1,200-seat conference facility, two levels of basement car parking and retail. StayWell operates across Australasia as well as the Asia Pacific and Middle Eastern regions. It operates two hotel brands, Regis Park and Leisure Inn, and has 20 hotels in its portfolio

Am I reading this correct?
![]() The first application is for the refurb of Auchinleck House to provide a 300 bed 4 star hotel and conference facility at 103,000 sqft. So where are we seeing the other 375,000 sqft? or are they talking about the entire land around the site (e.g car parking etc) |

remember there were two applications
1) simply the refurbishment of the tower... with no/little external changes, simply the change of the use of the building 2) the refurbishment of the tower, the addition of an extra floor for a roof top restaurant and a new conference facility around the base... it is my understanding both are for this hotel chain!

Ah yes. I see now.
I hadn't actually had time to look at the plans. Obviously Pentavia would've been better but this seems to do the job and I love the rooftop Restaurant. |

I'm suprised at just how much the 2nd application actually proposes. I reckon the end result will look pretty good. Can't find the 2nd application on the agenda for thursdays planning committee though, just the 1st one.
![]() I never felt comfortable with Pentavia, can't put my finger on why but it just filled me with 'meh' and seemed to die within weeks of those 2008 renders coming out.

+1, the current site is so drab, dreary and depressing in dire need of a fresh lease of life.

Nice visual in today's BP showing a before and after view of the proposed transformation. Looks very modern and not like a refurb unless you knew what was there before. Planning is today, fingers crossed.
