SOCHI | Gorky Gorod – resort complex U/C

Gorky Gorod – a resort complex located in the center of the unique Krasnaya Polyana. The snowy mountain caps and alpine-style meadows, the primordial forests of the Sochi National Park, the cool mountain rivers and waterfalls are what makes Krasnaya Polyana one of the most beautiful places in Russia. Today, thanks to Olympic investments, the region is getting a world-class infrastructural complex for transportation, utilities, resorts, and sports.

Gorky Gorod will have modern houses boasting breathtaking mountain views, hotels ran by the world's leading hotel operators, boutiques and spas, cozy cafes and restaurants, trendy night clubs, and of course tourist facilities you will be able to make use of any time of the year. The Gornaya Karusel ski resort provides the opportunity to engage in active sports. During the 2014 Olympics, Gorky Gorod will be used as the Olympic Media Village. Thanks to a unique set of circumstances, this region, located in the heart of the Caucasus and just a half-hour drive away from the Black Sea, will see a resort of the future unlike any other in Russia or abroad.

Olympic Media Village
at +540 meters

City 540 is the lower part of the Krasnaya Polyana Olympic Media Village. It's located at 540 meters (or 1,771 feet) above sea level on the banks of the Mzymta River. This town will become home to some 2,000 journalists for the period of the 2014 Olympic Games. The town occupies 33 hectares of land, a third of which has been allocated for parks.

Great building progress, but in terms of style in my opinion this is horrible kitsch production. Mix of Italian renaissance, swiss alps architecture, Greek temples and Russian architecture - and even some moorish features. In Germany there is a word for it: Geschmacksverirrung (misguided taste).

Superficial like Vegas...they should instead look at Russia`s own great architectural roots rather than build cheap architectural imitations of Europe - its a pity and incredibly ridiculous!

I think this is horrendous! Way to ruin the natural landscape. Doesn't one go to the mountains to get away from the normal grind of life, including shopping?

Russia is nearly 95% nature but can you make money with it ? Not really.

I miss some old Russian wood houses.

I have ambivalent feelings about Sochi's projects.

Somehow it's probably better than something concrete-modernists would have come up with.

But it also really feels odd and non-historical. A rather strange mix of styles and some details and proportions that just look out of place.

Anyway... Are there updates on the status available? Some fresh photos of the progress?

Most of it looks quite vivit and nice. Though some buildings are over the top, I prefer this anytime to the London Olympic Village, which looks like Soviet Union.

Right, why not to refer to vernacular traditions instead of mindless copying foreign ones... Looks like some time-space anomaly over the Alps that caused a few unrelated towns to melt together into one big mess.
