Albania and Israel established diplomatic relations on August 20, 1991. Albania had previously recognized Israel as a state since 1949. Albania has an embassy in Tel-Aviv and Israel also has an embassy in Tirana.

Albania was the only European country occupied by the Axis powers of World War II that ended World War II with a larger Jewish population than before the War. Furthermore, Israel has been one of the richest countries to receive Kosovar Albanians refugees from Kosovo War in 1999. Many refugees were provided medical care, food and accommodation by the Israeli authorities,as a gesture of thanks to the Albanian people after their contribution to the saving of Jews in the Holocaust period.


October 1997. At the Civic League's request, Congressmen Lantos and Gilman write a forward to Rescue in Albania by Harvey Sarner. The League begins distribution of 10,000 copies to demonstrate the courage and tollerance of the Albanian people who saved all the Jews in Albania from Nazis in World War II. Here DioGuardi presents a copy to Pope John Paul II at an audience in Rome.

Nice presentation. It was a pleasant surprise to see the very warm welcome our clown PM received in Israel. Small correction: Israel does not yet have an embassy in Tirana but it will open one soon. This was confirmed by israeli FM Liberman.
Considering our close relations with Turkey, it's important that we stay politically neutral in regards to the issues that country has with Israel.
Berisha during a speech he gave, went as far as to condemn Iran's nuclear ambitions and compared Ahmedinejad to Hitler.

One more thing, albanian citizens can travel to Israel without a visa and the same for israeli citizens travelling to Albania

US Congressman Eliot Engel (jewish-american), honorary member of the National Albanian American Council (NAAC), has been the most vocal voice of the albanian cause in Washington for the past couple of decades. His bio in Wikipedia says very little about the significance of this man in issues relating albanians. Both Thaçi and Berisha have called him a great friend of the albanian nation.

Here he is during the inaugural construction ceremony of "Highway of The Nation" (Rruga e Kombit) on Kosovo's side earlier this month.
He was also present when the Albania side of the motorway was completed a couple of years back.

Berisha: We showed what we can do when free

Before returning to Tirana, Prime Minister Sali Berisha was welcomed in Tel Aviv by the Albanian-Israeli Friendship Association, mainly composed of Albanian Jews who have left Albania in the early 90s.

They gave Berisha the Honorary Member title with the motivation “For an extraordinary contribution in strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Israel and Albania, and the constant support to the people of Israel”.

PM Berisha expressed his gratitude for Albania’s representation by the Albanian Jews in these 20 years, turning into Albania’s best ambassadors in this country.

“We don’t have an intensive exchange history in the past, but we have an excellent symbolic past. Our countries have always met as friends, and this is the truth. Both countries have suffered, but in freedom, Israel has proved what free Jews can do. In these 20 years of freedom, the Albanians have proved more than anyone of what they can achieve when free”, Berisha declared.

After inviting the Israeli-Albanian Friendship Association in the 100th anniversary of Albania’s Independence, PM Berisha invited the Albanian Jews to intensify the efforts for orienting the Israeli business to invest in Albania. This visit in Israel was considered by Berisha as one of the most important, and it was the main public part of the government meeting, where he expressed his optimism for the realization of the projects with Israel.

“The interest for investing in Albania was huge, and I have the pleasure to inform the Albanians that the positive echo of this government’s reforms was wide, and that this echo stood behind this great interest of the Israeli investors in our country”, Berisha declared.

I like the Albanian flag. Reminds me of the old-school European empire flags from years gone by. Certainly more interesting than the boring horizontal coloured stripes that every country has these days.
