i suspect some politics to have been paid to accept that project.

If a mosquée was the proposal it would had been refused directly.

We know russians investors are precious for paris (hermitage, some newspaper takeover...)

This is a really cool looking project, I love the blend of modern and traditional.

I agree with you on the golden domes Manneken, I had the same reaction. Initially, as you can see in the render below, the domes were made of glass, but the russian deciders made the architects know that golden domes were more traditional in Russia, therefore, the architects took their objection into account.

Initial glassy domes

It's an interesting project, but I'm not sure as well if those flashy domes would fit in.

Why wouldn't they fit in dude? It won't be the first building/monument with a golden top...

---> Les Invalides

---> L'Obélisque de la Concorde

---> L'Opéra Garnier et ses statues

Etc

They got it by buying out the building 'Météo France' (Head Office) last year. On that occasion, the russian state spent around 60m€.

Météo France to be demolished

Looks like mushrooms + a flying carpet. I don't think this fits with the architectural styles around it. Not impressed.

Why should it fit in anyway? Eiffel Tower doesnt for instance, yet no one could imagine Paris without it.

IMO the golden domes aren't that bad, and I don't like the glass domes more. I think the golden domes are actually a good idea, cause the church itself has a traditional style. It's like that the church breaks with the towers through that modern structure, thats great.

You're actually laying your finger on a true issue Askold...indeed, the mayor of Paris -Bertrand Delanoë- is now firmly opposed to this project for the same reason. According to him, the winning project's architecture which he calls 'pastiche' (caricature), is not up to the site belonging to the Unesco World Heritage. For Delanoë, this project was designed by the french & russian states, without the agreement of the city of Paris.

The below project by Frédéric BOREL came 3rd & was to Delanoë the most suitable project for this location. It was also the favourite one for many of us, me included.

Borel's project (which came 3rd)

I'm sorry. I think that project fits even less than the one currently proposed. Modernist much? Also, it is very, very ugly. Think plain concrete unpainted walls in Paris. Not good-looking.
