I quite like it, though the authentic Russian orthodox churches look even nicer. For a different direction than that this looks very good.

Bertrand Delanoë still opposed to the current project

Quote:
On 12 november, the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë repeated his 'aesthetic' hostility to the Spiritual & Cultural Orthodox Church that the Russian Federation wants to build Quai Branly.

As part of a lunch with the Press, the Mayor of Paris said the current project is going to 'damage the site' & 'give a bad image' of both Russia & the Orthodox religious authorities.

Though, according to a well informed observer, this project would be Vladimir Poutine's 'apple of his eye'...

The Mayor of Paris also said he didn't want to declare war between Russia & France, his opinion being only consultative.

The French state is to reach a decision by late november.

Initially they were transparent but the russian asked for them to be golden, like in Russia.

Official and final project unveiled!

The architect is Jean-Michel Wilmotte.

I like the domes, but don't much care for horizontal lines -- not on chubby folks, not on buildings. I think it would look better if the "patterned look" under the main dome had been used more extensively in the design.

I think it came out nice. The golden domes are stunning.

Frankly, I find this design to be rather insulting both to the Russian Orthodox community and to Paris itself.

Here is a proposal from a Russian firm which unfortunately did not win, but in my opinion is much more suiting for both locale and context.

Any construction updates? Or is there somewhere else I can look?

There's more heart in that traditional design, but I am happy to see modern architecture rather than recreating the past and never furthering ecclesiastical architecture. Modern is fine as long as there is order and detail. I'd like to have seen the Russian firm's design combined with the current one.

I like the brushed, silvery golden domes a lot, but I don't like the brittle looking crosses. I'd rather see the crosses in the Russian firm's design than the three-bar Russian crosses.

Never the less, much better than St. Nicholas at Ground Zero, though both merely cloak traditional (if not generic) architecture in white minimalism.

The current building reminds me of the architecture in Franco's Spain

Hey, am I the only one bothered by the fact that the traditional meteo France office (that actually looked great) was demolished for this fruitcake?
