GMF, Georges Malaika Foundation: school for girls in Kalebuka, KATANGA

School in Congo Teaches Sustainability

Georges Malaika Foundation School.

Next month, 104 grade school girls will enter the newly opened Georges Malaika Foundation School, designed by Studio MDA. Located in a village on the outskirts of Lubumbashi, the second largest city the Democratic Republic of Congo, the plan of the school is a simple courtyard building with classrooms connected by covered walkways. The courtyard serves as the hub of the school, around which adjacent programs are organized under shaded outdoor spaces. The classrooms, in clusters of three, are free standing and turned at a slight angle to maximize light and air. Each classroom has a covered outdoor space on one side and a view to the landscape on the other. Double roofs catch breezes, inducing natural ventilation and large overhangs on the roofs create ample shading. Constructed wetlands clean black and gray water generated by the school, allowing water to be re-used for landscape irrigation and educational agriculture. Materials used include compressed soil bricks, made from soil on site, instead of burned bricks, which have been largely responsible for widespread deforestation in the region.

That's a beautiful school, simple and very effective. I would like to see more schools with sport facilities. Our kids need to play sport in high school but unfortunetly it doesn't really bother our authorities.

Exactly. and it costs cheap to build a school like this. with $1 million, could build up to 13 of these.

But we don't even have an Education Budget. do we have governors? expect for 1.

Blv Lumumba cost about $180 million if I'm not mistaking. Let's make it 200 million with $200 million we can build 40 world class schools throughout the country with sport facilities, science lab, libraries etc....Our politicians don't know the priorities especially the current one even Tshisekedi, he keeps talking about free education but where will they study in? hmmmmmm

Yeah, its very sadning, hence why i said, i don't expect too much from opposition either ( but still prefer it, 1 and O isn't the same , i would take 1 ).

It would take at least two year to get a good number of schools built.

However. The Lumumba Blvd could have been done better if they included a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit ), not just a for private cars. Although , it can still be rodified for BRT. Kin is heavily populated, so i understand the need for a wide Boulevard like that.

Me think , investments into education has been so no existant from the Central Government (at least Mise is doing something).

Our 3 existing Universities (UNKIN, UNILU, UNKIS) are rotten just like Kiwele was. $200 million in Higher education, is enough to modernize the existing ones and add some more critical universities.

What a shame.
