I recognize and really like this building, even though I've never been to Birmingham. It's by the the Greek new urbanist architect Demetri Porphyrios, who is known for his award-winning 'new classicism' designs, including many fine buildings in the UK; Oxford, Cambridge, London, Birmingham, Swansea etc.

Porphyrios is responsible for the New Bay Science and Innovation Masterplan at Swansea University, so don't know if that's what you mean as being salubrious or whatever? It's a major educational project, just like Porphyrios Associates undertook and completed at other prestigious universities, such as in Oxford and Cambridge in England, and Princeton in the States. As for masterplans, Porphyrios Associates along with Allies and Morrison are spearheading the King's Cross masterplan redevelopment in London, Europe's biggest.

Thanks everyone, yes i did enjoy my stay Brummyboy92. i have been to Birmingham a few times and its always felt like a city dominated by its 60's developments which break up lots of beautiful and interesting parts of the city center. But for the first time i felt like it was a city that was joining up these areas with exciting, challenging modern architecture, architecture you rarely see in the UK, yet there are 3, 4 examples of it in Birmingham. The center of the city still felt like it had a hole in it because of New Street station but its redevelopment and John Lewis department store (another exciting looking building) should resolve some of this, and hopefully stimulate other developments nearby. On the whole this seems like the most exciting time for Birmingham, the potential for turing the city center around seems achievable unlike any other time IMO. As you probably can tell i left with a sense of optomism in what are bad times.
