Thailand promotes trade with Pakistan and Israel

The Nation November 28, 2011 12:13 pm

Thailand is strengthening trade ties with Pakistan and Israel, following the Cabinet's resolutions on Nov 22.

Weerachai Nopsuwanwong, deputy director-general, Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, said that the Cabinet approved the memorandum of understanding for the establishment of joint trade committees (JTCs) with Pakistan and Israel.

"The moves are to strengthen economic cooperation and to relax trade rules... The JTCs would be a major mechanism to boost bilateral trade and investment... The MoU should be signed soon, to pave way for the first JTC meeting," he said.

Bilateral trade with Pakistan last year amounted to $916 million while that with Israel at $1.05 billion. Thailand exports mostly vehicles, parts and accessories, sugar, chemicals, plastic pellets and food products to both markets.

With 176 million population and massive investment in infrastructure projects, Pakistan could become a new potential market for Thailand.

Thailand is the most popular destination for the Israeli tourists in the Far East.
I'd love to see more cooperation between the two countries.

The Thai princess was in Israel a few months ago and had some nice things to say - “In my heart I feel half Israeli. I think like an Israeli. I visited here for the first time in the 1970s, and since then I keep looking for opportunities to return.” This is added: “The princess said that she even added an Israeli name to her name, Tzila, and that is how she referred to herself when she signed the president’s guest book.”

She looks like someone who's had way too much plastic surgery though.

good stuff!

I love Pad Thai! I can live off that stuff if i had too.....
Any good spices you can recommend that can tear my ass apart?

Other than that.... what do you expect from Thailand in the next 5-10 years? I see emerging markets like China and India demanding alot from China and as a result, there will be a lot of consumer demand from both sides.

Israeli work scheme getsaxe on huge tab for Thais

Published: 16/03/2012 at 02:02 AM

The Labour Ministry has scrapped a plan to send 5,000 Thai workers to Israel after learning the job placement expenses were more than 300,000 baht a worker.

"It is a kind of unfair exploitation and it won't benefit workers," Labour Minister Padermchai Sasomsap said.

About 5,000 Thai workers were expected to travel to Israel next month.

Mr Padermchai revealed some employment firms tried to cover up the high cost of worker placement through various tactics such as splitting the bill for one worker into two bills.

Ministry officials found out about the placement costs after interviewing Thai workers and their families from northeastern provinces such as Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu and Nong Khai.

All of them confirmed the cost of a job placement in Israel ranged between 300,000 and 400,000 baht due to a bidding process which benefits only employment firms in Thailand and Israel.

"I have instructed officers to compile all information before forwarding it to the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Department of Special Investigation for further investigation and action against people involved in any illegal activities," he said.

Inflated job placement expenses is a problem that could taint the reputation of both the Thai and Israeli governments, Mr Padermchai said.

The Labour Ministry has sent a letter to the Israeli government to seek cooperation in its effort to tackle the problem.

The minister will today meet with the Israeli ambassador to Thailand Yitzhak Shoham to discuss the matter in greater detail, an aide said.

"I want to propose that job placement should be done through government agencies of both countries, so that the expenses per worker will not be so high," said Mr Padermchai.
