20 clusters to be promoted in MSME sector
Twenty industrial clusters would be promoted in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector across the State during the current financial year at an investment of Rs.136 crore, said M.C.Sampath, Minister for Rural Industries and Noon Meal, here on Friday.
Nine of these clusters would be set up in collaboration with the Coir Board and one of them would be situated in Pudukottai, he said, speaking on the sidelines of a function to mark the opening of a showroom of the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) in the city. He also indicated that steps were underway to identify a suitable site for the proposed exclusive industrial estate for women in Srirangam constituency. Earlier, speaking at the function, Mr.Sampath said the State government was committed to popularise the products of the TANSI, which were known for quality and affordability. The corporation would achieve the sales target of Rs.110 crore for the current financial year. Apart from the existing orders at hand, efforts were on to secure more orders. Besides steel and wooden furniture, TANSI was also engaged in various specialised equipment, including products for ISRO, BHEL and HAL. He appealed to the local bodies to procure their furniture requirement from TANSI. The TANSI showroom would serve Tiruchi and other central districts and a special discount of 10 per cent would be offered till July 27. N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, Youth Welfare and Sports, said School Education Department was one of the major customers of the TANSI and last year, orders for furniture for schools worth Rs.33 crore were placed with the corporation under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. He promised to place more orders this year. K.Allaudin, Chairman and Managing Director, TANSI, said the State government was keen on bringing about a revival of the corporation, whose growth has been affected for some time in recent years owing to stiff competition from the private sector. He appealed to the elected representatives of local bodies and the district administration to procure furniture and hand pumps from TANSI. He also suggested that MLAs could provide furniture to government students’ hostels under the Local Area Development Fund by placing orders for the same with the TANSI. Niranjan Mardi, Principal Secretary, MSME Department, said the Chief Minister, at a recent review meeting, has ordered the opening of TANSI showrooms in Namakkal, Tiruchi and Madurai. While the showrooms at Namakkal and Tiruchi have been opened, the one at Madurai would be opened soon. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan pledged full support to the TANSI and affirmed that all orders for furniture and handpumps from the district administration would be given to the corporation. She urged the local bodies to follow suit. S.S.Saravanakumar, Deputy General Manager, TANSI, proposed the vote of thanks. M.Paranjothi, R.Manoharan, T.P.Poonatchi and T.Indira Gandhi, MLAs, T.Rajathi, chairperson, District Panchayat, and A.Jaya, Mayor, were present. source: The Hindu |

BHEL plans 'model production cluster' to end cartelisation
In order to break the cartelization of industrial consumables, the BHEL Small Scale Industries Development Service, now in its new avatar as Bidass, has embarked on a model cluster of networking. Bidass which has now 397 member units spread around Trichy region was formed as the first network cluster in the early 1980s and later incorporated as a Section 25 registered company under the Indian Companies Act, 1956.
Started in 1984 with a membership of 13 units, Bidass has today grown to have 397 members as Trichy was fast becoming a hub of engineering activity for boiler industry in India. Many daring entrepreneurs had set up fabrication facilities and machine shops in and around Trichy, and a group of entrepreneurs had established their units to cater to the ancillary needs of BHEL and similar boiler manufacturing companies. Meanwhile, the looming risk of increasing consumable prices was increasing the cost of production. Moreover, supply has to be regular and time-bound to keep up production schedules. A lateral thought occurred, and an idea was born to buy directly from manufacturers and supply quality products to member units in time, said S Sampath, president of Bidaas. It is a model of cluster networking, and the primary idea is to avoid intermediaries. The resultant savings is passed on as price reduction to the members, Sampath explained. In fact, Bidass had achieved a turnover of Rs 37 crore in 2010-11 and this figure shot up to Rs 50 crore in the current fiscal. Since oxygen is a prime cutting consumable for member units, Bidass has put up a state-of-the-art Liquid Oxygen Plant to supply high quality oxygen at very low prices. The unit will be officially opened by the executive director of BHEL, A V Krishnan, on July 24. Bidaas, however, charges two percent over and above the market price to meet the administrative expenses as the association has employed around 65 people, said vice-president of Bidaas M Vairavel. But the price charged by Bidaas is the benchmark in the market, and all other suppliers gravitate their prices around this price. Furthermore, there can be no cartelization by outside suppliers when Bidaas sets the benchmark prices, added Vairavel. Any fabrication unit having an experience of two years in the market without any partnership squabbles may become a member of Bidass by paying a nominal Rs 20,000 as fee. Vairavel said the association was now planning to increase membership to 600 units after getting due approval from the company secretary. Bidaas has at present depots at Thuvakudi, Mathur, Ariyamangalam, and Thiruverumbur, and one more at Pudukkudi is under construction. The association is also planning to add one oxygen plant at Mathur depot, and an Argon plant, another high cost cutting gas. Source : TOI |

Soon, industrial estate for women entrepreneurs
A new industrial estate for woman entrepreneurs is likely to come up in Inamkulathur that comes under the chief minister's Srirangam constituency in Trichy district, said MC Sampath, minister for rural industries and nutritious noon meal of government of Tamil Nadu here on Friday.
In a brief meet with reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) showroom in Trichy, he said that their department started out to choose a suitable place for setting up an industrial estate for woman entrepreneurs in Trichy. Initially, they considered an area in Inamkulathur for this purpose. But as the land belonged to the wakf-board, they were yet to decide on the same. However, the state government progressed towards setting up 20 micro, small and medium enterprise clusters (MSME) in the state by the end of this financial year. Of these, nine clusters will be set up for coir products, one of which would come up in Pudukkottai district. Likewise, they were determined to work towards achieving the goal of setting up 100 MSME clusters in the state by 2015. Earlier the minister inaugurated the TANSI showroom near the district collectorate in the presence of minister for school education NR Sivapathy, principal secretary to MSME department Dr Nirajan Mardi, president and managing director for TANSI K Alauddin, Trichy district collector Jayashree Muralidharan as well as mayor A Jaya, other MLAs and local body representatives. The showroom was opened in order to revive the TANSI corporation that had shelved its operations in many parts of the state due to the emergence of private players in furniture and engineering works sector. The showroom will have an array of furniture made of wood and steel so that customers can choose their products. Sampath added that customers could avail a 10% discount on all products from July 20 to July 27 as an inaugural offer. However, the local body representatives can make use of the offer on the products always. Dr Niranjan Mardi said that as of now, TANSI operates 36 factories and three showrooms, including the newly opened one in Trichy. They would soon start a showroom in Madurai as well. TANSI achieved a profit of Rs 4.8 crore during the financial year 2011-12 and they expected to increase the profit to Rs 5 crore by the end of this financial year, he said. Source : TOI |

BIDASS sets sights on supplying raw materials
![]() BIDASS, the Thuvakudi-based industrial services association that has been supplying quality welding consumables at competitive costs to BHEL's nearly 400 ancillaries in and around Tiruchi for three decades has announced plan to start supplying raw materials as well. The initiative augurs well with BHEL's advice to the ancillary units to shift to Away Centre Fabrication (ACF) business model whereby the sub-contractors will have to procure their own raw material. BHEL has been advocating this system to do away with time-consuming non-value activities. Vendors will in due course enjoy the convenience of placing online orders for consumables and raw materials. E-payment facility is also in the offing. Starting off in 1984 with membership of 13 entrepreneurs and Rs.20 lakh turnover, BIDASS has grown phenomenally to attain Rs.50 crore turnover in 2011-12. Operating on no profit no loss basis, BIDASS has been ploughing back its small margin of gains for strengthening infrastructure and creation of testing facilities. As a dealer for LPG with Indian Oil Corporation, the industry services association passes on the benefits to its members. On Tuesday, BIDASS reached another milestone by getting its Liquid Oxygen Plant commissioned, and putting in place SAP ERP System for making available real-time inventory reports, paving way for seamless connectivity between depots in Mathur, Tiruverumbur, Ariyamangalam, and Pudukudi. Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, A.V.Krishnan, launched the oxygen plant that while R.Sundar, Director of Boilers, commissioned the SAP ERP system in the presence of S.Sampath, BIDASS president, V.Sivamani, secretary, and leading industrialists. Terming the BIDASS' business model as unique, Mr.Krishnan exuded hope that the entity's utility will reflect in better productivity of the ancillary industries. Adequate importance must be accorded for Safety, particularly in the movement of lakhs of tonnes of materials. Sequential supply by vendors was vital for reducing the delivery cycle time substantially. Cycle time reduction, he emphasised, was key to global competitiveness in a scenario where power sector has witnessed a slump in the last couple of years belying expectations. Despite the lowering of power capacity addition target in the 12{+t}{+h}plan from one lakh MW to 88,000 MW, Mr.Krishnan expressed confidence that BHEL will witness at least 20 to 25 per cent growth. Bajaj officials visit BHEL to review works on Lalitpur power station
BHEL bags orders for the Rs.5, 450-crore project executed by LPGCL in Uttar Pradesh.
Shishir Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director, and Karorimal, Vice President-Project, Bajaj Group, visited BHEL, Tiruchi, on Saturday for reviewing the 3x660 MW Lalitpur Supercritical Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Uttar Pradesh. BHEL has bagged orders for the 1,980 MW Lalitpur Supercritical Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Uttar Pradesh. The Rs.5, 450-crore project has been executed by Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited (LPGCL), a Bajaj Group company. A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, and other senior executives held a detailed review meeting with the visiting customers and discussed the supply status of components. Mr.Krishnan briefed the officials about company’s capability in executing power plants with supercritical parameters up to 1,000 MW. He also said BHEL is concurrently executing 18 supercritical boiler units in various parts of the country. While addressing the review meeting, Mr.Shishir Bajaj said that Bajaj Group is very keen to see that 3x660 MW Lalitpur Supercritical Thermal Power Project commissioned on time as this was the largest investment that Bajaj Group had ever made . He also exuded confidence that BHEL has the capability and capacity to commission the project on time. Earlier, outbidding Alstom under stiff International Competitive Bidding ICB), BHEL has bagged the main plant package contract for three coal-fired thermal units of 660 MW each with supercritical parameters. This is the first power project being set up by the Bajaj Group based on supercritical technology and by placing this order with BHEL, the customer has reposed confidence in the company’s technological excellence and capability. With this contract, BHEL has maintained its track record of bagging most of the orders for power generating equipment in Uttar Pradesh. The company has commissioned about 9,900 MW of power generating sets of various ratings in the State, so far. The order once again reflects the confidence reposed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in BHEL’s capabilities. In the last two fiscals, BHEL has received 71 per cent of their power plant equipment orders from IPPs. source: The Hindu |

KUCHING: The steel sector is set to ‘grow in waves’ as steadfast growing demand is fuelled by the nation’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
![]() Dato’ AK Nathan ![]() According to Eversendai Corporation Bhd’s (Eversendai) executive chairman and group managing director Dato’ AK Nathan, the robust demand going forward is expected to augur well for the group. During an interview with The Borneo Post Nathan said, “Our plans for the second half of the year is to remain focused on our core business, that is being a leader in the design, fabrication and erection of structural steel works for high-rise buildings, stadiums, steel bridges, infrastructure projects and the installation of mechanical and electrical works for plants.” However, he did not discount the possibility of being on the lookout for gainful merger and acquisition (M&A) opportunities of synergistic businesses that would contribute positively to both the company’s turnover and profitability. Eversendai’s first quarter 2012 (1Q12) results showed increase from 2011, as AK Nathan noted that the company was targeting for its turnover to increase this year with profit after tax and minority interest (PATAMI) target maintained at approximately 11 per cent. “For 2011, revenue was predominantly derived from projects in the Middle East at 86.4 per cent whilst India and Malaysia contributed 7.8 per cent and 5.8 per cent respectively. “Going forward in 2012, we will see Malaysia’s and India’s contribution to increase from the power plant projects from Manjung and Tanjung Bin and the Worli Mixed-Use Development Project in Mumbai,” he revealed, stressing that he foresaw the Middle East to be the major contributor to revenue in 2012. On capital expenditure, the executive chairman noted that Eversendai’s overseas ventures did not require extensive capital outlay apart from those disclosed in its prospectus. Its fabrication facility in Trichy, India required RM30 million to RM35 million while its six mobile cranes for Manjung and Tanjung Bin power plant projects cost RM10.5 million. Nathan noted that one of its key challenges was to secure the required resources to match its growth, especially in the human resources aspect. “We are not aggressively looking at foreign workforce to support our expansion,” he revealed. The company’s current order book stands at RM1.9 billion as of March 31, 2012. The CEO believed that further contribution from Malaysia and India would further strengthen the company’s standing with a higher percentage in 2012 compared with 2011. In the broader picture, Nathan noted that the government’s ETP would ‘definitely boost the steel industry’ with the many planned Entry Point Projects. “At present, the projects we are targeting under the ETP are still at the preliminary stage which includes the Warisan Tower and My Rapid Transit,” he revealed. He explained that the government had always and continued extending support to major steel industry players through various approaches and institutions, however, Eversendai’s key strategy focused on a well-spread business across different geographies. “We are not dependant on a single client or location but in a broader business alignment perspective. Indeed, the majority of our businesses are from overseas, however, we are slowly and surely intensifying our presence in the local arena.” |

Industry to benefit students
To create scope for economically backward engineering students to fund their own studies, Shivani group of institutions here has initiated efforts to start an industry close to the campuses of Shivani Institute of Technology and Shivani Engineering College.
Taking the support of the BHEL Small Industries’ Association (BHELSIA), Shivani group hopes to make it a sub-contracting unit of BHEL for carrying out machining job works, P. Selvaraj, Chairman of the group of institutions, told The Hindu . After establishing a production unit close by in the next two to three months, students will be facilitated to work for a few hours every day, and earn regular income. While the government exempts first generation graduates within specified family income limits from paying tuition fee, what they earn will be sufficient to meet expenditure towards hostel fee, Mr. Selvaraj said, adding that such a set up will also provide valuable exposure to students to become readily employable or start industries by themselves after graduating. “It will signify a progress in our initiative for industry-institution interaction.” “We intend to invest up to Rs.2 crore for the purpose,” he said, adding that girls will not find it difficult to work with CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) lathes. The procedure for securing Small Scale Industry registration from the District Industries Centre has been initiated, BHELSIA president Rajappa Rajkumar who is also a member of the governing council of the group of institutions, said. The job works will be in the area of machining and welding. An exposure to such industrial jobs in the engineering field will stand the students in good stead to become entrepreneurs in future, he said. -MRR/TP |

Turnover of BHEL set to exceed Rs.17,000 crore
BHEL’s Tiruchi complex is poised to surpass Rs.17,000 crore turnover this fiscal, Executive Director A.V.Krishnan informed in his 66th Independence Day address on Wednesday.
Technology absorption of the once-through supercritical boilers, envisaged as the main business in future, and full load operation of 250 MW Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) boiler at Neyveli, the largest of its kind in the country, were major feats achieved by BHEL, Tiruchi. Serving as the backbone of the Indian power sector wherein three out of every four homes are lit by BHEL equipment, the company has drawn up a strategic plan fixing six-point agenda: capability enhancement; accelerated project execution; product cost competitiveness and quality; diversification; engineering & technology; and people development, Mr. Krishnan said. On meeting customer requirement, he said: “Operations at Power Plant Piping Unit (PPPU) at Thirumayam have been stabilised. A new plant is being proposed at Bandara in Maharashtra. Capacity augmentation of Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP) at an outlay of Rs.159 crore to produce 90,000 metric tonnes of seamless tubes for making tubular products are the other steps taken by the company.” Introducing multi-modal dispatch system through land route and sea ports & third party logistics; large scale e-procurement; Value Stream Mapping (VSM); Design To Cost (DTC); and Knowledge Management and Succession planning figure among the new initiatives. Mr. Krishnan unfurled the national flag and took the salute at an impressive parade by BHEL's Security, Home Guards, NCC Cadets, Traffic Wardens and students of campus schools to the accompaniment of BHEL's Security Band, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kailasapuram township. 41% of overhauling of bogies done by workshop
Golden Rock Railway Workshop has carried out intermediate overhauling on 1,510 bogies for Southern Railway during 2011-12, meeting nearly 41 per cent of Southern Railway’s annual requirement, its Chief Workshop Manager P.Mahesh said here on Wednesday.
Though the workshop had a capacity to handle only 25 per cent of Southern Railway’s annual periodic overhauling, it had delivered over and above the capacity, he said delivering the Independence Day address at the workshop. During the same year, the workshop has also carried out periodic overhauling on 809 coaches including air-conditioned and non air-conditioned coaches. The overhauling requirement of these coaches was increased to 18 months from the normal 12 through the use of wear-resistant material. During 2011-12, the workshop has completed periodic overhaul of 138 diesel locos against the target of 79. The carriage body shop of the workshop, which takes up heavy corrosion repair, too has improved productivity, delivering 12 coaches a month from just eight during 2010-11. The wheel shop repair section had attended to an all time high of 8,123 wheel sets to meet the demands of the workshop and divisions during the current financial year. The workshop has bagged orders from Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) for the manufacture of ‘BLC’ and ‘BLL’ type wagons. The workshop has despatched seven BLL rakes of 40 wagons and all the 15 rakes ordered would be delivered by December. The CONCOR has also placed an order for 1,000 BLC type container wagons and made an advance payment of Rs.70 crore. Railway Board has also given the workshop an order for 360 BOXN HL stainless steel wagons. During the current year, the workshop is expected to make BTFLN tank wagons, he said. The RITES has approached the workshop for manufacture of 16 WDS6 locos for domestic use, 40 metre gauge locos for Myanmar Railways and overhauling of sub assemblies such as power pack, turbo super charger, traction generator, traction motor and wheel sets for Mozambique during the current financial year, Mr. Mahesh disclosed. The workshop, he pointed out, had obtained ISO-9001 accreditation for quality management and ISO-14001 for environment management system. It also received OHSAS-18000 certification for promotion of labour safety. Though these certifications, an integrated management system certification was also obtained. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3783775.ece |

Ayyampalayam fast losing its status of mat weaving hub
![]() Virtually decimated by factors such as severe labour shortage, steep hike in prices of raw materials and a declining market for mats, Ayyampalayam is no longer the ‘korai pai’ weaving hub it once was. M. Muthusamy and the two machines in his mat weaving unit are the handful of survivors among hundreds of such units that once flourished at Ayyampalayam, some 30 km away from Tiruchi. Today, less than 10 units survive in the area, and even these are not too far from folding up, according to Muthusamy. ‘Korai’ mat weaving, a multi-step process, begins with harvesting of the ‘korai’ crop, which is cultivated on a large scale in and around Musiri. “The harvested ‘korai’ is torn into two, dried and graded according to size before being sold to weavers as ‘kathais’ (six bundles of 18 inch diameter),” says R. Anitha, an agricultural labourer. At the unit, the korai is machine-cut on both ends before being fed into a main machine where it gets stitched by the ‘narambu’ (synthetic thread) into closely spaced rows, explains Sujatha Muthusamy. Acute labour shortage She and other relatives work on Muthusamy’s weaving unit for want of labour. “After the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was implemented here, there is hardly anyone left in the village to work in agricultural fields or traditional industries such as ours,” she says. The government drafts people in Ayyampalayam for jobs such as strengthening the Salapatti road and the Antharapatti road or for desilting work on irrigation canals like the Senthamangudi Panaimarathu Vaikal and Kaattoram Vaikal. All labourers are paid Rs.135 for a day’s work, while people like Muthusamy find it increasingly difficult to offer competitive wages. “Mat weaving is a highly strenuous job and people refuse to work for anything less than Rs.150 per day, which is a steep price considering our profits (0.50p to Rs.1.50 per piece),” says Muthusamy. Expensive raw materials The industry also suffers from price rise: While one ‘kathai’ costs nearly Rs.500, the thread (whose prices keep fluctuating) costs Rs.5 per mat now, the weaver said. “The past few months have made it extremely difficult to run the unit because there are several unscheduled power cuts, sometimes lasting up to even four hours,” says Muthusamy, who added that this was another reason why labourers refused to work at mat weaving units. Despite all these issues, the unit produces around 30 mats in a day. “These days we do only ordinary mats, though we did try once to make kalyana pais,” says Sujatha. The colourful, intricately designed ‘kalyana pais’ (used traditionally in marriages) require at least two skilled labourers, which became impossible to find. “We had to shut it down within just 20 days and today it lies along with the other machines awaiting disposal.” Stiff competition The Mumbai-made plastic mats which has made inroads into the south, is cited as an important reason for the industry’s rapid decline. “Factory-made, the plastic mats came in a range of colours and designs and soon most people stopped buying our mats even for weddings,” laments Muthusamy. But he also points out that the plastic mats have caused heat boils and raised body heat to its users. “The korai mats on the other hand are natural coolants in the summer and offer warmth in the winters; they are also recommended material to sleep on for the treatment of body aches and very much a traditional aspect of Tamil culture.” Keenly aware of the industry’s bleak future, Muthusamy hopes that the government will bail them out: “If the government could declare this as cottage industry and provide us electricity under Tariff 3A (meant for cottage industries) it would help us in cutting costs,” he says. Presently they pay Rs.3.50 per unit consumed. He also felt that if the banking sector, which has labelled the industry ‘sick’, resumed offering them capital loans it could help keep the surviving units afloat. Source: The Hindu |

Five entrepreneurship development programmes likely for Tiruchi
The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) is likely to sanction five Technical Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (TEDP) for Tiruchi region this year, according to agencies promoting entrepreneurship.
The National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Hyderabad, had already sanctioned eight entrepreneurship and skill development programmes (ESDP) for Tiruchi and Thanjavur. These programmes are being conducted in Tiruchi by the R.K. Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre, a partner institution Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Chennai, and Tiruchi District Micro Entrepreneurs’ Association (TIMEA) with guidance from Periyar Technology Business Incubator. The Periyar TBI is supported by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. K. Kanagasabapathy, Managing Trustee, R.K. Trust, informed that TIMEA was prepared to extend hand-holding support to prospective entrepreneurs in the areas of door mat weaving, beauty parlour business, and sandal tablet making. At a recent meeting organised here by R.K. Trust and TIMEA to motivate new entrepreneurs, P. Veerabadhran, Branch Manager, SIDCO, Madurai, said the State Government was keen to promote industry clusters. The cluster development work has been assigned to SIDCO. A minimum of 50 units manufacturing a same product will be identified as a cluster. By establishing clusters, entrepreneurs can collectively develop common facility centres. The Centre will grant 60 per cent of the project cost and the State will chip in with 30 per cent; the promoters’ share will be only 10 per cent. Common facility centres could be established for engineering in Tiruchi, for rice in Mannachanallur and korai grass products in Musiri, he said. T.V. Krishnan, Additional General Manager – New Product Division, BHEL, said in his special address that the job works had to be done at lower rates due to competition. Mr. Krishnan also released paper plate products manufactured by a woman entrepreneur Annalakshmi after undergoing WEDP (Women Entrepreneurs’ Development Programme) conducted by the State Bank of Travancore. Ms. Annalakshmi became an entrepreneur under the State Government’s UYEGP (Unemployed Youth Employment Guarantee Programme) with loan sourced from the bank. C. Ramaswamy Desai, Project Director, Periyar TBI, said the State Bank of Travancore will team up with Periyar TBI to conduct two-day women entrepreneurship development programme during the fourth week of September. E. Ramasamy, Director, Shivani Group of Institutions, also addressed the participants. Source : The Hindu |

BHEL to set up new plant in Maharashtra- Engineering major BHEL plans to set up a new manufacturing facility in Maharashtra for which it would invest Rs 1,590 mn, a top company official said. BHEL Tiruchirapalli Complex Executive Director A V Krishnan said BHEL, which has a special focus on power plant equipment, plans a 90,000 tonne capacity production facility of seamless tubes products at Bandara in Maharashtra. Though it is in the initial stage, pending land acquisition, BHEL has decided to invest Rs 1,590 mn to augment tubular products available in the western region, where requirement is high, he said. Krishnan said given the transportation bottlenecks all over the country, the location of the new plant has been chosen near Nagpur due to its easy access to major steel plants like Bhilai and Rourkela. He expressed hope that things would fortify for the actual blueprint by next month and is expected to crystallise in the next two to three years.

BHEL despatches burner panel to Barh
![]() Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, on Wednesday despatched the first super critical burner panel manufactured for National Thermal Power Corporation’s Stage-II 2 x 660 MW project at Barh, 75 km off Patna in Bihar. The 10-tonne consignment was flagged-off by A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director. A key component in boiler systems, burner panels with inserted wind box for injecting pulverised coal mixture are used at the spiral furnace wall. A press release said engineering and manufacturing of the 16-metre high Burner Assembly for supercritical boilers was highly complicated, requiring 3,500 multi-plane bends using 300 tubes of 41.3 mm diameters alloy steel tubes. Having mastered sub-critical and conventional drum-type boilers, BHEL was now offering the Once-Through Supercritical (OTSC) boiler backed by Alstom, the world leader in power equipment products, the release said. OTSC boilers with two to three percent higher efficiency are preferred over sub-critical boilers in the backdrop of continuous increase in demand for coal. Other benefits of OTSC technology for higher unit ratings of 660 MW to 1,000 MW include lower fuel consumption, lower emission, lower operating costs, and greater operational flexibility. Inclusive of the order for NTPC’s project slated for commissioning shortly, BHEL has already contracted 18 supercritical sets totalling about 13,000 MW source:MR.RAJA/TP |
