BHEL urges customers to use quality spares for power plant efficiency
Best efficiency of power plants could be achieved only through placing orders for spares with original equipment manufacturers, A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, said.
Speaking at a customer meet organised by the Spares and Services Business Groups of BHEL's New Delhi, Tiruchi, and Ranipet units at Chennai recently, he assured efficiency of spares supplied by BHEL. On the services front, BHEL has formed cross functional teams with a few customers organizations to analyse and resolve problems like tube failures and vibrations, Mr. Krishnan said. Thirty-five customer officials belonging to seven Power Generation companies in southern region took part in the meeting. The participants represented Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, Madras Fertilizers Limited, Puducherry Power Corporation Limited, Surana Power Projects Limited, Sterlite Industries Limited and Rajeswari Sugars Limited, according to a BHEL press release. The State government wants BHEL to supply required spares for power projects as efficiency improvement of existing plants was very important to resolve the energy crisis, the Managing Director of TANGEDCO Rajiv Ranjan, said, in his inaugural address. The State government plans to add 8,000 MW of additional power generation capacity with 600, 660, and 800 MW boiler sets, he said. The financial viability of TANGEDCO depends on tariff revision as there was a gap of Rs.2 a unit between actual rate of realization and actual cost of sale. The TNERC would come up with their findings in March after which the Tariff Petition could be operationalised, he said. In his key note address, K Balasubramanian, Director/Generation, TANGEDCO, said that repair and maintenance of one of the units in Tuticorin was being planned. He appreciated BHEL for completing the commissioning of Valathoor Gas Station of 92.2 MW capacity three months ahead of schedule and declared that the Mettur Thermal Power Station achieved maximum power generation. T N Veeraraghavan, ED, BHEL, Ranipet; R.K.Sood, General Manager/In-charge, Power Sector, Southern Region, BHEL, Chennai; and C.P.Chengappa, General Manager, Spares Business Group, BHEL, Tiruchi, spoke. Technical presentations were made on boiler spares, controls and instrumentation products, renovation and modernisation, boiler house auxiliaries spares and field engineering services. BHEL demonstrates full-load operation of its first 250 MW CFB boiler
![]() Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, successfully demonstrated a full-load operation of its first 250 MW Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) boiler supplied to Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) at Neyveli on February 4. The second unit is in advanced stages of erection. It is stated to be the highest capacity CFB Boiler in the whole of South East Asia. The successful demonstration of the unit's performance signals the use of a new technology for utilising India's vast lignite resource in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner. The plant has a list of new technical advances such as natural circulation technology for highest possible steam pressures (180 bar) for higher turbine efficiency and avoiding circulating pump for boilers; Pantleg Configuration, split furnace at the bottom, a feature useful for further scaling up the unit capacity up to 500 MW ranges; low SOx (Sulphur Oxide) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions; and rotary quad sector air heaters. The CFB technology also helped in overcoming one of the perennial problems faced in Neyveli due to presence of Marcasite (a form of Iron Sulphide- FeS2) which causes slagging at operating temperatures and forms ash deposits on waterwall tubes. The CFB technology employs much lower temperatures (<900ºC) and thus avoids slagging issues caused by Marcasite, giving smooth boiler operation. CFB boilers are also able to handle high moisture, up to 55 per cent, a key feature required by most Lignite Mines as they have high levels of stored thermal energy in their circulating ashes. This vast reserve of stored thermal inventory makes possible maintaining lower load operation without oil support. BHEL, with its strong technology sourcing from Lentjes, Germany, and active collaborative projects with leading Indian and International Institutes, utilises one the largest CFB Test Rig facilities in the world, and is uniquely positioned to customise design to meet the varying fuel properties while meeting International standards. Two CFB Boilers of 125 MW capacity supplied by BHEL to NLC, Barsingsar, Rajasthan, have also achieved sustainable full-load operation. -Kannan/T.P |

Came across a news article in Friday's dinakaran and dinathanthi like some coach manufacturing factory is going to be established in Palghat at an investment of around 550 crores INR at 250+ acres that will begin coach manufacturing in 36 months. Was that about which TRB spoke a while back i.e that was supposed to come to Tiruchi?

BHELSIA units urge State to streamline power supply
Through a march on Tuesday, BHEL Small Industries' Association's (BHELSIA) appealed to the State government to streamline power supply and extricate hundreds of its member units from the serious predicament of losing orders.
Association president Rajappa Rajkumar who led the team of industrialists from the St. John's Vestry Higher Secondary School to the District Collectorate said in a memorandum submitted to Collector Jayashree Muralidharan that the survival of nearly 400 small, tiny and medium industries serving supplying boiler components for BHEL, Tiruchi, was at stake due to the frequent power cuts, hike in bank interest rates, and manpower shortage. Due to the power cuts, Tiruchi was fast losing its identity as ‘Mecca of Fabrication'. The member units of BHELSIA were collectively losing up to Rs.6 crore per month on account of idle labour, and were unable to keep their commitments to the BHEL, thereby losing orders. The member industries employ 14,000 direct employees, and 10,000 others are serving the industries indirectly, Mr.Rajkumar said. Due to delay in supply of component to Vallur and North Chennai power plant, their commissioning has been delayed, aggravating the situation further. Use of diesel generators is not viable as the cost of power production per unit works out to Rs.15, as against Rs.6 charged by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, the BHELSIA president said, making a case for diesel subsidy. In the present situation, many member units that have together invested Rs.1,200 crore were unable to pay interest on term loans and working capital. Rather than declaring such struggling units as non-performing assets, banks should devise means to put them on the growth trajectory, he emphasised. As banks have increased interest rates to 16.5 per cent to 17.5 per cent, the situation has turned critical for tiny, small and medium industries, he explained. Suggestions put forth by the BHELSIA for addressing the piquant situation included supply of power continuously for a minimum of 10 hours a day; declaring two days in a week as power holidays in a staggered manner amongst various industrial estates such that the manufacturing units get uninterrupted power for the balance five days; permitting LT units to purchase power from private power producers and draw the same through the available grid; and early commissioning of Kudankulam power project after convincing the people about safety aspects. -MRR/T.P. |

Thanks MK for the links. The Tanjore-Trichy-Madurai stretch has lots of industries such this, but its not getting to be considered as an Industrial corridor, which could further develop this stretch.
Also well done your industrial Trip in Mdu.

First set of headers for Krishnapatnam power project
![]() Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi Complex, achieved a major milestone on Friday with the despatch of the first set of headers for the 2x800 MW power project at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, flagged off the first set from BHEL's High Pressure Boiler Plant here. A typical 800 MW supercritical boiler unit requires 43 headers, each weighing up to 38 Metric Tonnes (MT) and having a length of up to 24 metres. The headers were transported on special trailers. Headers being very critical component in a boiler system are subjected to rigorous statutory inspections at various stages of manufacturing. The two 800 MW supercritical boilers, with a weight of about 32,000 metric tonnes each, are being set up by BHEL for the first time against a Rs.2500 crore order placed on the company by Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited (APPDCL), for setting up the 2x800 MW Steam Generator (SG) package at Krishnapatnam. BHEL had demonstrated its international competitiveness by securing this order by outbidding the L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine in a global tender. BHEL's scope of work in the project envisages manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the Steam Generators and associated auxiliaries including Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs). For the project, the supercritical boilers will be manufactured by BHEL in Tiruchi, while the Hyderabad and Ranipet plants will supply coal mills and ESPs respectively. Supercritical technology ensures lower coal consumption, minimum emission and eco-friendly and efficient power generation. BHEL has been promoting joint venture companies to build, own and operate supercritical thermal power plants in association with state utilities like TNEB, KPCL and Mahagenco. BHEL has upgraded its technology base from sub-critical sets to supercritical sets of 660/800 MW and above. The company has ongoing collaboration agreements with Alstom, France and Siemens, Germany, with a technology transfer arrangement. This will enable the country to be self-reliant in the field of supercritical thermal power plants. -MRR/T.P. |
