I've summed up news from this thread which have been posted since 1st January '12. And here is the top 10. I counted only new roads, no widening to 3-,4- and so on lanes, no reconstruction expect of situation when a road wasn't motorway before. Hope there isn't too much mistakes.

Quote:
Nr Country km
1. China 6922,10
2. USA 683,48
3. Poland 604,29
4. Japan 233,00
5. India 198,00

6. Spain 195,80
7. Romania 180,60
8. South Korea 106,80
9. Dominican Rep 70,00
10. Bulgaria 66,30
I'm supriesed about India, I tought that they are opening more new motorways.

One more thing. China have opened 6900+ km off motorways. Rest of country mentioned in this thread have open about 2800km.

E44 Dubai, United Arab Emirates

3 January 2013

A reconstructed part of the E44 opens to traffic in southern Dubai. This road used to be a 2x4 road with roundabouts, but it has been widened to 2x6 lanes and now includes interchanges, which makes it a freeway. The new stretch is about 11 kilometers long.

The official figure for China is actually 11,000 km. India and Germany's rates are very low for such large countries. Portugal's rate is higher but not all openings were mentioned on this thread. Spain's rate is lower than normal, probably due to its economic crisis. Sri Lanka, El Salvador and Kenya opened their first ever motorways.

Germany is a large country, but the existing Autobahn is already very well developed! It is normal that the growth is not as strong as in other countries.

The German rate is not correct. The Autobahn length was extended by 31 km in 2012. Thereof the first carriageway of the A98 (7,2 km), which is also signed as an Autobahn.

In addition 10 km of expressways ("Yellow Autobahn") with two carriageways where opened. To 4,5 km, a second carriageway was completed.

Overall the German Autobahn were extended by about 45km in 2012.

I'll try to keep you up to date in the next months.

Expressways do not count as motorways. They are not built to the same high standards. I cannot include them as if I did, I would have to include them for every other country too.
