How are they different from motorways?
In many countries, people don't use the word "motorway". The word "expressway" is used to differentiate from a highway or freeway (such as in the US, Canada, some Asian countries etc.).

I know that in some countries like Japan "expressway" is actually motorway. However in Poland, for example, a motorway is a motorway and an expressway is a normal road built with grade separations.

I cannot agree.

Expressways:
-New express ways 2x2
-service areas
- for vehicles <3.5 t are tolled free
-one level junctions free

Motorways:
- the same except for 2x2( Warsaw area and Upper Silesia 3x3)
- tolled for all vehicles

So, my question is: where are these big differences?

If I understand it correctly the only differences that can matter between new 2x2 expressway and new 2x2 motorway in Poland is the allowable turning radius and broadness of lane in some cases. So in the end max speed on motorway is 140 km/h and 120 km/h on two lane expressway.

I think the purpose of this thread is to account openings of grade-separated, restricted-access dual-carriageway roads in the world, be them signed as motorways or expressways. Both terms are very flexible, so what only matters is that roads must be grade-separated, restricted to non-motor vehicles and dual carriageway in order to be in this thread.

Exactly. Now please add more motorway / expressway openings in this thread

I'll start with an upgrade;

Starting 1 January 2013, a 1 kilometer segment of B1 in Düsseldorf, Germany was administratively upgraded to A52.

China has stopped suddenly after opening a ton of expressways on last days of 2012. Only on the 31st they opened the following:
G56 Jinsha-Bijie (In Northwest Guiyang)
Qingzhou-Chongzuo (South Guangxi, number unknown)
Luoyang-Luanchuan (Henan, number unknown, possibly S57)
S88 Luoyang-Lushi (Henan again)
S59 Sanmenxia-Lushi (West Henan, once again)
Dexing-Shangrao (Eastern Jiangxi, number unknown, possibly S1x where "x" is an odd number)
G76 Gangzhou-Chongyi (Southwest Jiangxi)
G45 Liren (East of Longnan)-Guangdong border (Southern Jiangxi)
Fuzhou-Ji'an (Central Jiangxi so it's not THAT Fuzhou , number unknown, possibly S4x where "x" is an even number)
G72 Ji'an-Lianhua (i.e. Hunan border, literally "lotus") (What a busy day in Jiangxi...)
Nan'an-Xiamen (Fujian, number unknown)
G1502 and S1571 (?) Jinjiang-Shishi-Jinjing (Part of Quanzhou ringroad in Fujian)
G42 Hubei border-Wushan (Northeast Chongqing. Only Wuduhe-Chongqing border in Western Hubei remains and your G42 is complete, Forte Two!)

They probably complete roads, but don't officially open them until auspicious dates (or a date when the local politicians are free). Better to complete them on the 31 Dec than 1st Jan. Nobody notices things that happen on New Years' Day, everybody is off work that day.

Australia

After a quiet 2012, the first decent stretch of new motorway opening in at least a year!

Frankston Bypass (Peninsula Link)(Route 11), 27 km, Victoria

Frankston is suburb of Melbourne located on the eastern shore of Port Philip Bay. The bypass starts at the southern end of Eastlink (M3) in Carrum Downs and finishes where it joins up with the existing Mornington Peninsula Fwy at Mt Martha. It will relieve congestion around Franskton and provide a quicker route to the popular bayside towns of Rosebud, Portsea and Dromana.

All ramps are open now-- there's full access at GA 316 via a trumpet interchange.

M3 Hungary

16 January 2013

A 33.8 kilometer extension of M3 opened in eastern Hungary. It stretches from Nyíregyháza to Vaja. The construction cost was 31.9 billion HUF or about € 3.2 million per kilometer, which makes M3 one of the cheapest new motorways in Europe.

A89, France

21 January 2013

A 52-kilometer segment of A89 opens to traffic at 9:30 a.m. in central France. It's the eastern extension of the Autoroute A89 from Balbigny to La Tour-de-Salvagny and is the final large segment to open between Bordeaux and Lyon, two of France's major cities. Driving time between both cities is reduced to just over 5 hours. The toll cost for the entire route is close to € 50 one way.

The A89 is a fairly new motorway, most of it was constructed after 2000, except for a stretch of former A72 between Clermont-Ferrand and Balbigny that opened between 1977 and 1987.

The official figure for China is actually 11,000 km. India and Germany's rates are very low for such large countries. Portugal's rate is higher but not all openings were mentioned on this thread. Spain's rate is lower than normal, probably due to its economic crisis. Sri Lanka, El Salvador and Kenya opened their first ever motorways.
India is not focusing on building expressways as it has become a nightmare to build expressways in India because of its population density, lack of space and maximum number of villages and small towns between any two big cities. As a result we need to building a hell lot of interchanges,U-turns etc etc.

Instead of exp India is adding lots of new tolled 4/6 lane highways.

(Sorry for going off topic Chris but had to explain this).

Eastern China is densely populated too, but they have build those expressways.

Anyways, back to topic:
18th January:
Guangdong S82 South branch through Shunde district, Foshan. 10 km.
Zhengjiang S30 Zhijiang bridge. 5 km. Finally we know where it is: South Hangzhou.

20th January:
G25 in Shandong, Qingzhou-Jiangsu border. Ca. 250 km.
Shandong Sxx (number unknown, it has to be an odd one), Dongping-Jining. 23 km.
Sichuan S2 Santai-Xichong (71 km) and Rixing-Guanyinjing (14 km). Only 12 km from Guanyinjing to Liulin remain unopened.

According to Wiki population density of the 11 provinces, special municipalities, and autonomous regions along the southeast coast, population density was 320.6 people per km2 while that of entire India is 382 which include the thinly populated north-east states, desert of Rajasthan and gujarat,Himalayas and Eastern and western ghat mountain ranges. So now you can imagine the actual pop. density of habitable India.

This is the last message Chris.Sorry again...

China Spain: E07 A-23 Nueno-Isuela gorge in half profile. Southbound lanes only, used as two way road. Includes a tunnel and a couple viaducts. The 90s road* will be rebuilt to meet motorway standards.

*Is not the old road since that one is former C-136 :P
