OAK/SFO/SJC/SMF/MRY/STS | Northern Californian Airports

I guess since there are threads devoted to specific airports and airlines....I thought I would begin a thread about my hometown airport, SFO........I will be maintaining this thread with accurate info about SFO, such as the addition/deletion of carriers, added flights, change of aircraft, or any other news that would be of interest to the other great ppl on this forum.......

I will get around to posting pics of SFO and the planes that serve it.....As of now, I'm unable to edit posts....So I hope I'm able to post up pics...Maybe since my post count is too low, I'm not authorized to utilize many functions/tools on this forum?

Virgin America adding flights to San Diego

Virgin America will begin service between San Francisco and San Diego on Febuary 12, with three daily flights and will expand to five on March 9, the company said Wednesday.

Virgin America, based in Burlingame (San Francisco suburb) which operates out of their home base airport hub (SFO) began airline operations on August 8.

The airline currently serves New York, Los Angeles, Washington, and Las Vegas.

The company said it will serve as many as 10 cities within it's first year of operation, and up to 30 cities within the next five years....

SAS to launch direct routes to New Delhi and San Francisco

Next year, SAS will expand its fleet of aircrafts with an additional Airbus A340, thereby making it possible to launch two new intercontinental routes. In autumn 2008, New Delhi in India and San Francisco in the US will be introduced to the traffic program. India is a market experiencing strong growth and demand for flight connections is increasing. SAS will initially offer four non-stop flights per week between Copenhagen and New Delhi from November 2008.

“We are continuing to focus on satisfying our customers’ needs for new destinations by offering time-efficient non-stop connections from Scandinavia. Both India and the US are countries that are attractive destinations for both business and leisure travelers. We will offer an attractive product with three classes onboard and a high level of flexibility,” says Lars Lindgren, Chief Executive Officer of Scandinavian Airlines International. San Francisco will also become a new SAS destination from autumn 2008 when the traffic program is expanded, initially with three non-stop connections per week between Copenhagen and San Francisco.

“SAS currently has a relatively large traffic program in the US, with direct flights from Copenhagen to New York, Chicago, Washington and Seattle. From Stockholm, we fly to New York and Chicago. Based on our partnership with United Airlines, we have been able to offer a wide range of additional destinations in the US. Due to considerable demand we are now experiencing for travel to California, it feels appropriate that we add our own route to San Francisco,” Lars Sandahl, Chief Commercial Officer at Scandinavian Airlines International.

The Airbus 340 to be used on the New Delhi and San Francisco flights has approximately 245 seats in three classes: Business Class, with Business Sleepers (chairs that recline to a bed), Economy Extra – an upgraded economy class with extra legroom and extra in-flight service, and Economy Class. “The launch of these two routes is part of Scandinavian Airlines International’s new expansion strategy, which this year has resulted in the launch of three new routes: from Stockholm to Bangkok and Beijing and from Copenhagen to Dubai,” says Lars Sandahl, Chief Commercial Officer at Scandinavian Airlines International.

Thats the gate I just exited. Usually Southwest flights (as most of them fly to multiple locations) are in the gate numbers between 18 and 25 of Terminal B.

OAK/SFO/SJC | San Francisco Bay Area Airports

Couldn't find an existing thread for SFO, but wanted to share this link to an interesting article from the Sydney Morning Herald: "The best US airport for Aussies to get stuck in"

Relax in the new yoga room at San Francisco airport

San Francisco International has opened a new yoga room to allow passengers to relax before their flights. KNTV's Bob Redell reports.
By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor
Stressed-out travelers willing and able to be flexible now have a new way to relax and refresh at San Francisco International Airport.
On Thursday, the airport officially opens what it claims is the world’s first dedicated yoga room at an airport.
“The room gives modern travelers a space that fosters and supports quiet and reflection. Those aren’t emotions that people typically encounter at the airport,” said Melissa Mizell, design director for Gensler, the Terminal 2 architecture firm that also created the yoga room, in a statement.

Courtesy of San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco International Airport now has a yoga room where frazzled travelers can take a few moments to relax.
Located just past the security checkpoint in the recently renovated Terminal 2, the new yoga room is bathed in calming blue light, with a floating wall said to symbolize a buoyant spirit and enlightened mind. Lights in the room are low and warm — to counteract the bright concourse — and loaner mats are supplied.
The innovative idea is getting early kudos.
"Relax passengers between flights? Help them find balance in the crazy world of travel? How wonderful!," said nurse consultant Anya Clowers of JetwithComfort.com.
"Airports like SFO get it," said Greg Principato, president of Airports Council International - North America. "They are looking at the big picture and meeting the needs of travelers by offering products and services that contribute to their overall comfort."
In the spring, large, felt-constructed rocks will be added to the room and arranged in a nod to Japanese-style, Zen garden spaces.
SFO spokesperson Charles Schuler said the new yoga room will be open whenever the Terminal 2 security checkpoint is open — currently 4:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. — and that a list of yoga room rules will soon be posted. “To help people find the room, we’ve even created signs that feature a stylized pictogram depicting a person in the lotus position.”

Sound too woo-woo for you?
For travelers seeking an alternate space to gather their thoughts without having to get down on the floor, SFO also offers the Berman reflection room — “a center for quiet reflection and meditation” — pre-security in the International Terminal.
And for those who find relaxation amid the bright lights and bustle, there's no shortage of bars.
