Is it a particularly busy route? I assume CA must be a big connection point for Australian, flights? Or are they now stopping over in places like Dubai, or even Beijing or Shanghai?

California is one of those big gateway states for passengers from the Far East and Oceania, and it offers a diverse set of opportunities for tourism and trade. Not to mention, Australians just love to travel and work in San Francisco (I had an Aussie friend who is also a member here, in which he visited San Francisco twice and loved it), and we have Silicon Valley as a huge draw for businesses. That's why i'm so pleased that QF has recalled the value of SFO in their network that they are resuming once again after 4 years... perhaps so many passengers continue on from LAX (not to mention, QF also flies from MEL and BNE to LA) that nonstops from SYD are warranted to augment its existing services. For a start, those flights would be operated with the B744 and B744ER, yet I hope that it will launch flights from either MEL or BNE too to add diversity to its service (currently, no nonstops are available from SFO to either destination).

As for A380 service to SFO, it would be a boon to passengers wanting to visit Northern California as it will then join AF, BA, EK, and LH already operating it on a regular basis.

Great News !! New Delhi: Air India today announced the launch of a non-stop flight to San Francisco from December 2, fulfilling a long-pending demand of Indian IT professionals on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the Silicon Valley.

"We are launching a direct non-stop flight to the San Francisco on December 2 as there was a demand for it," Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani announced at an event to celebrate the World Tourism Day in Delhi.

Looks like United Airlines will be investing much more in its San Francisco base by expanding its flight network to three new, long-haul destinations:

Auckland (service resumption, last served March 2003)

This service will initially operate thrice weekly from 1 July 2016, and it will increase to daily from 28 October 2016 in time for the Winter season. Once the days for 1 July to 27 October is released, it will be included in this list.

Note: there is an aircraft listing conflict, with UA saying it will be operated with a 788, while Airline Route reports the aircraft type as a 789

UA917 SFO2245 – 0655+2AKL 787
UA916 AKL1305 – 0630SFO 787

Tel Aviv

This brand new service will begin operation from 30 March 2016, in which it will be operated thrice weekly. With this flight, it will complement existing El Al service operating from Los Angeles (on board B777-200ER) and it will allow flyers to choose between two carriers between California (and the US West Coast, if not also BC) to Israel.

UA954 SFO2000 – 2010+1TLV 789 357
UA955 TLV0055 – 0600SFO 789 257

Xi'an

This will be United's second secondary city service to China (after Chengdu), in which it will be operated seasonally during the summer (similar to CTU) three times a week from 8 May 2016. Schedules to be determined.

Haven't seen this posted, but BA announced service from SJC to LHR will be starting next year:

British Airways to Launch First Nonstop Transatlantic Service from San Jos้, California to London, England

August 26, 2015 12:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--British Airways today has announced that it will begin service between Mineta San Jos้ International Airport and London Heathrow from May 4, 2016. This marks the first regularly scheduled nonstop service to the UK for the city of San Jos้. British Airways will operate the newest aircraft in its fleet, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring the airline’s newly designed First cabin.

San Jos้ will be the fourth Californian city from which British Airways flies, following Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. Earlier this year British Airways introduced its superjumbo A380 onto San Francisco, providing customers with comfort, space and enhanced wellbeing for their trip to London.

Seats on the new service from San Jos้ will be on sale from Thursday August 27.

Simon Brooks, senior vice president for British Airways North America, said “We are thrilled to be bringing our most technically advanced aircraft to the tech center of the world. We want to give the business community in and around Silicon Valley more options to access the UK and Europe, quickly and easily.

“Choice and flexibility when flying are critical for our Bay area customers so we believe this new service will be a welcome addition to our network. With connections beyond London to over 130 destinations around the world, we’re delighted that we can bring the world just a bit closer”.

Mayor Sam Liccardo added: "San Jos้ and Silicon Valley tech companies have committed to Mineta San Jos้ International as being their airport of choice, and have expressed strong support for a direct flight to London for several years. The British Airways announcement to launch service between San Jos้ and London Heathrow will be well received by both business and leisure travelers in our region.”

BA279 will touch down in San Jos้ for the first time at 6:05pm in the evening of May 4, 2016 and BA278 will depart San Jos้ at 8:00pm the same evening, arriving into London Heathrow Terminal 5 at 2:05pm the next day.

"London is the No. 1 requested international destination from Mineta San Jos้ International Airport, and we're so pleased to share the news today that we have delivered this service to Silicon Valley businesses and residents," said Director of Aviation Kim Becker.

“We warmly welcome British Airways and the innovative Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner to San Jos้, and know our mutual customers will also enjoy SJC's convenience, on-time performance, and technologically-advanced facilities and services."

The airline’s 787-9 Dreamliner will accommodate eight customers in the new First cabin, 42 seats in Club World, 39 in World Traveller Plus and 127 in World Traveller. Lower pressurization means less dry cabin air, leaving customers feeling more refreshed with less jet lag while the aircraft’s smooth ride technology reduces the effect of turbulence. Soothing mood lighting in every cabin gradually adjusts to reflect the time of day and the large windows feature electronic dimming switches.

At SFO, the renovated E concourse in Terminal 3 is such a contrast to the old F concourse. Are there any plans to renovate Terminal 3's F concourse to match the E concourse?

I was looking through the projects page, and it mentioned that an airport hotel will be constructed soon, and the anticipated completion date is in 2018.

Where exactly does everyone think it will be? The description given is rather general, stating it will be at the entrance to SFO, accessible to the AirTrain, close to terminal buildings and parking garages, with easy access to Highway 101.

Does that mean they are going to build this thing on top of the airport access lanes between the two main parking garages (A and G)?

Heard a rumor from an SFO employee that the hotel will be built on the site of the current Employee Parking Lot B.

If Icelandair is not keen in resuming nonstop Reykjavik-San Francisco service, Iceland's low-cost carrier is seriously considering operating it. From The Independent in Ireland:

'Ultra-low-cost' airline announces routes from Ireland to LA and San Francisco
Quote:
WOW Air is set to fly to California from summer 2016, with two new routes to LA and San Francisco confirmed.

The Icelandic carrier already flies direct from Dublin to Reykjavik, which means Irish passengers will be able to connect to the West Coast cities with an estimated total journey time of 13.5 hours.

Prices will not be confirmed until flights go on sale in January 2016, the airline has told Independent Travel, but lead-in rates are likely to be considerably lower than the €329 each-way fares quoted for direct flights from Dublin to LA by Aer Lingus.

Aer Lingus is to fly direct to LA from May 2016, while Ethiopian Airlines has been operating a direct service from Dublin Airport since June.

WOW's stopover time in Reyjkavik is likely to be two hours, the airline says, and the Reykjavik-US route will be serviced by three new Airbus A330-300s aircraft, the first wide-body planes in its fleet.

I saw Flight Radar 24 on AI 173, and the aircraft registration is VT-ALG, a B777-200LR. The last time I checked, it was over Russia.
