What/where is the world's tallest columns?
I have seen some american government buildings that have columades that are around 2 storeys high but the Commonwealth Bank at martin place in Sydney Australia has columns some 5 storeys high. here is a photo -

These columns at the St Peters Basilica are more than 5 storeys high, if you compare it with the people at the base (like ants)

That ridiculous basilica in Lychen (Poland) has huge columns too, perhaps even bigger than those of St. Peter.

Never built, but one of the proposals for the Chicago tribune tower.
I can't help but picture a pair of these on opposite sides of a wide boulevard.

I'm sure it looks much less tacky as black and white drawing than it would in real life

Stuff built at that time hardly ever looked/looks tacky. That's a modernist invention.

Modernism might be dull and boring sometimes but almost never tacky it's probably the most elegant style in history Postmodernism however is probably the worst in this regard, most projects look like they were done by children and this giant column reminds me of this postmodern stuff despite being much older.

Brutalism is the tackiest style ever invented imho and thus is a modernist one.
But that doesn't really belong here. If you're looking for "tallest column", some sources lead you to this free standing one in Harris County, Texas - featuring a height of 172.92 m: Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sa...o_Monument.jpg It's called San Jacinto Monument.

Persepolis, with 550 columns, each one originally 25 meters high (as tall as a modern 8 storey tower)
