Govt wants ATCL to shape up businesswise

Dar es Salaam. Minister for Transport Omary Nundu has urged the National carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), to cultivate business acumen practices among its staff to enable it drive its profitability and cash flow.

Speaking during a 45-minutes programme aired by a local television on Monday, the minister noted that the move would help the company regain its control over the aviation business in the country and edge its place regionally.

“It’s crucial that ATCL cultivates business acumen attitude among its staff in order to maximise economic benefits for a comprehensive understanding of what drives productivity and flow of money, key performance measures as well as market environment to help it deliver,” he said in Dar es Salaam.

According to him, there was no justification in its continued dependence on government subsidies to carry out its basic operations, adding that as a business entity it must adhere to the principles of doing business including cultivating relations with banks and other financial institutions.

In the last budget, the government set aside a total of Sh16.7 billion to enable ATCL resume operations. Mr Nundu stated that the government had already provided over Sh5 billion, and that more would be given in instalments to strengthen the firm.

In September last year, ATCL resumed operations in two regions of Tabora and Kigoma after meeting the requirements. However, the minister expressed optimism that the company had a bright future provided it adhered to the basic principles of running as a business.

“I’m really geared by the experiences of SAA and Ethiopian Airlines development. I believe ATCL can take a leaf from them, including seeking partnerships with them,” he added. He pointed out that this should go simultaneously with the expansion and improvement programmes.

Runway check ni kazi ya Meneja wa Uwanja ambaye ni employee wa Tanzania airport authority. Pia mtu wa TCAA alikuwa wapi kwani wangeweza shauri ndege isiruke kutokana na hali ya matope uwanjani

There should be a national carrier no doubt but to make it economically feasible the govt must be prepared to invest in it, make its workforce lean and give it some tax breaks.

Its kinda sad when considering Precision airways is doing far better than them, I think the final solution should be to privatise it wholly. The govt seems not to care about aviation at all, Dar Intl Airport still sucks, when u go to reviews the best you can see is a 2/10 and people saying the only good thing is "you have to look beyond the airport, its one of the most beautiful countries in the world and very nice people" AND many saying the small airports upcountry are far better than Dar Airport. I was somehow disappointed in that statement because of the irony that nice people offer an atrocious airport to its visitors. I have used Entebbe airport countless times when i was doing my secondary in Uganda for those 6 years and i saw changes each and every year, the rehabilitation etc and how Air Uganda kept on Improving annually, but in tz how are things doing? None whatsoever..years of neglect and despair..worse still, JK still uses it for his monthly trips abroad..doesnt he look back and reflect how awful it is!? or the simple answer is, he simply doesn't care.. Aviation in TZ is dead.

That secretary concerned with aviation should resign. He is not fit for the job..Vicarious liability.
