Yeah!...the biggest asset ATC has is it's huge patriot clients that no matter what they will support their national carrier. With the same fleet number as Precision, there would definitely be good competition.

Just compare their facebook page and twitter.ATC has loads of followers.

ATC will lease another plane and it's Q300 will be back within 3-6 weeks time.

This is why African governments should stay away from running national, or any airlines for that matter: What a disgrace to Tanzanians worldwide. Yes, I know this happened back in 2007, but the effects are still being felt today!

Tanzania: Botched Plane Deal Costs 100 Billion/-
BY CHABY BARASA, 18 APRIL 2012
Comment
Dodoma — THE government will have to cough up over 100bn/- to offset a debt incurred by Air Tanzania Corporation Limited (ATCL) resulting from the troubled national carrier's move to hire an airbus from a Lebanese company in 2007.

A Parastatal Organisations Accounts Committee report tabled in the National Assembly in Dodoma on Tuesday said the amount combines interest and a 60,000,000 US dollar-guarantee provided by the government.

"It is obvious the government will have to pay the amount as guarantor of the loan taken by ATCL, which is currently in dire financial situation," reads the report signed by its chairperson, Mr Zitto Kabwe (Kigoma South-Chadema). The said debt was quoted as of June 30, 2011.

The committee called upon the government to take stern disciplinary measures against what it termed as irresponsible ATCL officials who abused their powers deliberately and caused the nation such massive loss.

The said plane, hired from Wallis Trading, arrived in the country in May 2008 but after operating for just six months it had to undergo major maintenance in France, where it is still being held after ATCL failed to clear 3,009,495 US dollar costs for the same.

The report further uncovered that while the Treasury Registrar issued the guarantee on April 2, 2008, the company had already struck the deal with the Lebanese company in October 2007 contrary to the opinion of experts who had opposed the move.
What's not mentioned in the article is that ATC didn't have enough pilots to fly the Airbus plane and nearly zero qualified Airbus engineers & mechanics. That plane spent nearly 90% of ATCL ownership grounded and the taxpayers paid full amount while it was in service as it was grounded!
It's no wonder kenya Airways withdrew it's offer to buy into Air Tanzania when it was placed up for sale. Too many bureaucrats were trying to skim off the profits while the airline was trying to restructure it's debts when SAA bought part of it. SAA blamed (officially) lack of passenger traffic for it's collaborative demise, but it's common knowledge that the government's influence spelled it's demise.

It's a good thing that Kenya Airways decided to buy 49% into Precision Air and turned it into TZ's best serving airline.
Imagine that!

ATCL boss sacked, four top officials suspended

By Mkinga Mkinga
The Citizen Reporter
Dar es Salaam. Barely a month after taking office as the minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe has sacked Air Tanzania’s acting director-general Paul Chizi. He was replaced by Captain Lusajo Lazaro, who will hold the fort in an acting capacity.

Captain Lusajo was formerly the director of operations at the airline. Mr Chizi was appointed to the managerial position in August last year. The sacking order drew immediate praise from the deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Organisations Accounts (POAC), Mr Deo Filikunjombe, who declared it a sign that the minister was serious about tackling the airline’s problems.

Dr Mwakyembe also suspended four other directors of the national carrier, among them acting director of engineering John Ringo. Also sent home were Mr Amin Mziray of the legal department, acting director of finance Justus Bashara and acting director of business Josephat Kagirwa.

A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Mr Omar Chambo, said the changes would take effect immediately. According to the PS, the five violated the Public Service Act and public service procedures.

The statement reads: “Through Act No 8 of 2002 and Public Service Principle No 17(4) of 2003, the minister for Transport has revoked the appointment of the acting ATCL director-general with effect from 5 June.”
The other four directors were suspended on the grounds that their services had threatened the survival of a public entity.

Dr Mwakyembe will now form a committee of three to investigate how the money released by the government in May this year has been spent. Members of the committee will be required to have legal and financial experience. Mr Chizi, who served the firm for 10 months, was not available for comment.

In their just-concluded session in Dodoma, MPs objected to what they described as the constant need to bail out ATCL and also having to pay for “irresponsible” decisions made by top management. The politicians were particularly angry about liabilities incurred through guarantees given by the government in connection with aircraft deals.

The airline is in the financial doldrums and has no plane to its name. Reportedly against the advice of experts and opposition within the airline itself, ATCL entered into a lease agreement for an A320 on the strength of a government guarantee.Dr Mwakyembe’s move was an instant hit with Mr Filikunjombe, who congratulated the minister for Transport for listening to MPs.

He added: “It’s a good start for Dr Mwakyembe. He seems to be serious about reviving the national carrier…this will have an impact on civil servants who have been thinking they are above everything.” It was a mistake, Mr Filikunjombe said, to appoint the outgoing Air Tanzania Company Limited acting director-general, who once served as managing director of the defunct Community Airline, and it was important that a competent team be appointed now if ATCL was to be rescued.

The outspoken CCM cadre wants the new management to link up with international airlines and boost the tourism industry.

kusema kweli mimi ninaunga mkono hatua ya Mwakyembe italeta uwajibikaji! Eng.
