Neel Metal Finalca avoided many streets since vehicle entry was very difficult.

Even autos volume collection per trip is very low.

May be Ramki will hire Narikoravas and temp Corp labor (who are already doing jobs) ans use Meen Body Vandis.

But they are fit for only short distance.

Rs 560 crores were the amount quoted by Neel Metal last time. Onyx wanted Rs 1300 crores.. Now Ramki will use inefficient labour and methods to minimise thier expense just like Neel Metal,

Going back to Tri Cycles is putting the clock back. They must pay well to keep the guys interested in the job like Onyx.

I would think of mobile incinerators to burn the waste within every 1 Sq KM.. Solid waste management by composting for around 5000 tonnes a day is a tedious process requiring lots of land and time.Impractical. Okay for a small Panchayat.

Again I think we produce more waste per household due to our food habits.. A change may happen in future.

Government to monitor waste water levels at pumping stations

CHENNAI: The sewerage board engineer's cellphone beeps at night, waking him up. The automated message tells him about a sewage pumping station well that is about to overflow. He dials the worker on the site, who had obviously dozed off, and tells him to run the motor that pumps waste water into the sewage treatment plant. And we are spared of stinking sewage from the pumping station that would have flowed back into the drains and spurted out of manholes onto the roads.

This scenario will soon be real as the sewerage board, CMWSSB, is planning to 'geo-fence' all sewage pumping station wells to monitor waste water level. Geofence is a virtual perimeter on a geographic area.

Sewage from parts of the city enters the 170 sewage pumping stations, and from there it is pumped to the treatment plants. The Off-Site Real Time Monitoring System fitted in the pumping station well, part of geo-fence, will monitor the rising level of sewage in the tank.

"The waste water has to be pumped to the sewage treatment plants continuously to prevent the well from filling up and overflowing. Once the well is geo-fenced, alerts will be sent to designated mobile phones when sewage exceeds a level," said a CMWSSB official.

The board has invited tenders for implementing the same. "It will take three months to implement it," said the official.

The pumping stations will be monitored from the headquarters on a giant screen. "A red light will blink if the water level crosses permissible limits and notifications will be sent to engineers and senior board officials. The engineers can then ask the workers concerned to run the motors properly," said a senior sewerage board official.

The new set-up will also keep tabs on workers. "The sewerage board staff will be given cellphones and they will have to take pictures of the well levels at frequent intervals," said a senior official. The picture will be geo-tagged with GPS in the phones. The location, longitude, latitude, date and time get stamped on the images and they are transmitted to a central server.

Sewerage board managing director K Gopal said this was just the first phase. "In the second phase we are planning to implement the same system in sewage treatment plants," he said.

All zones to get mechanical sweepers

They are capable of cleaning road in wet and dry conditions at the speed of 4 km an hour

All the 15 zones of Chennai Corporation will soon have mechanical sweepers to keep the bus route and interior roads cleaner.

To start with the civic body plans to deploy at least two small mechanical sweepers in each of the zones. Five such small mechanical sweepers are now being used by the Corporation in select locations, including Kamarajar Salai and roads near the Raj Bhavan.

They are capable of cleaning the road in wet and dry conditions at the speed of 4 km an hour.

The Corporation has around 2,500 sanitary workers and each of them cleans about 250 metres of roads with median a day.
Enhanced mechanisation

Since manual cleaning of sand and garbage near the pavements and median has been found to be ineffective, the civic body is planning for enhanced mechanisation of the conservancy operation.

The Corporation is expected to advise Ramky Enviro Engineers, the new private conservancy operator in three zones, to use mechanical sweepers for dust-free roads.

This morning I saw a group of sweepers in Neel Metal Green shirt being assembled in KB Nagar, Adyar and music was blaring from a system.

Looked like a celebration. For what ?

Send Off Party ? Last Day ? or Bill claim tamsha with photos for proof ?

I see hardly one sweeper in a few days of a week. But 20 - 30 people in single street at the same time - something weird ?

Diesel from plastics! Chennai firm shows the way

Chennai: A Chennai-based company has been pioneering a first-of-its kind technique in the whole of Asia to extract crude oil from plastic waste over the past three years at a plant at Alathur. The company, M K Aromatics, which has attracted the attention of civic authorities in states including Karnataka and Kerala, is yet to find takers in Tamil Nadu. The company's efforts are towards finding a solution to reduce the plastic waste menace.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, for its part, is planning to extend its support to this eco-friendly measure by purchasing diesel from the company to power its generators. According to Karthikeyan, Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, one ton of plastic waste can yield 800 litres of crude oil, which can later be distilled into diesel and various other forms of petroleum-products.

"Three hundred tonnes of plastic waste is generated in Chennai per day. If this can be used ideally, a significant amount of high quality crude oil can be generated, thereby solving the plastic menace," said M K Merchant, managing director of the company, talking to City Express.

"We are pushing Chennai Corporation authorities to get permission to set up such plants within the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dump yards," said Merchant. "This will help reduce the amount of plastic waste in these dump yards and will also help increase the life expectancy of the dump yards," he added.

"Bangalore municipality has made arrangements for our plants to be set up at all four dump yards in the city," Merchant informed. When most cities are making use of the Chennai-based facility, it continues to remains a question as to when our own Corporation will make use of it.

Ramky to submit micro plan next week

Ramky Enviro Engineers, which has got the contract for collection, segregation and transportation of municipal solid waste in three zones of Chennai Corporation from January1, will submit its micro plan of action to the civic body next week.

A detailed plan of action, including areas where conservancy operation has to be strengthened at night, is also being chalked out by the civic body and the private conservancy operator, sources in the Corporation said. The seven-year contract includes management of 1,500 tonne municipal waste every day in the three zones – Adyar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam. Ramky Enviro Engineers will replace Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF), whose term comes to an end on December 31.

NMF in Ambattur

NMF, will, however, continue to operate in Ambattur. It started work in a few wards of the erstwhile Ambattur Municipality in March 2009 and the contract is valid for another two years. The company is incharge of solid waste management in many areas, including Mogappair East and West, Padi and Anna Nagar West Extension, a Chennai Corporation official said. The company would be retained for the contract period in the Ambattur areas, despite their being merged with the Corporation. NMF removes around 150 tonnes of garbage every day from eight wards.

However, its services in Ambattur were not satisfactory, the residents complain. T.V. Rajamohan, president of Federation of Chennai United Societal Services, said: “Though the company collects more garbage than the municipal workers, NMF is not regular in its work. They do not collect garbage that is strewn around the bins. There are not enough bins and there is a shortage of vehicles.”

Residents also complained that garden waste was not being removed by NMF. “They say that garden waste causes fires in the dumping yard and therefore cannot be removed. We do not have space for setting up any composting facility in our compounds,” said a resident.

Asked about complaints from residents, sources in the civic body said that memos and notices have been issued to the firm asking it to improve the services. “They have said that they would be able to bring more bins and vehicles once their contract with the Corporation [for three old zones] ends,” said an official source.

3 years in operation? I never heard of this company/technology before.. If it is really reaping benefits, they should be given proper encouragement and support under solid waste management programme. Even they can try exploring carbon credits.

Vacant plots in merged areas still being used as dumping yards

Civic body taking time to implement solid waste management measures

Vacant plots in many localities that were merged with the Chennai Corporation continue to be used as dumping yards in view of the time taken by the civic body to implement solid waste management plans there.

S.Veena, a resident of Maduravoyal, said garbage collection was not being done on a daily basis in her area. “Though the previous administration of our locality was ineffective, they still did some work with regard to garbage clearance. We expected the Corporation to take over the operations once the local body elections got over. But that has not happened,” she said.

Some residents said they travel a few km to locate the nearest bin to dump garbage daily on their way to work. “Many residents throw garbage on vacant plots. I do not want to do that. I continue to carry garbage and dump in bins in the area that was part of the city limits,” said G.Rohini, a resident of Vinayakapuram in the Madhavaram zone.

R.Abhirami, of Prabhu Nagar, Thoraipakkam, said that their area, which was under a town panchayat earlier, did not have garbage bins. “The new administration too has not made efforts to place bins. We do not have any option but to dump garbage on vacant plots near our house.”

Poornima, who works in the Perungudi Industrial Estate, said a waterbody near her office was being used as a dumpyard. “People dump even industrial and hospital waste along the waterbody. I have written several letters to the Collector and the Chennai Corporation but no action has been taken so far,” she said.

Sources in the Chennai Corporation said a total of 1,000 tonnes was being collected daily from the extended areas alone. “Along with regular garbage collection from bins, we are in the process of cleaning up private and temple lands that were used as dumping yards. It would take another month for us to set things right,” the sources said.

Yep they have to do something to promote these things. Perhaps certain MTC routes should use only this diesel. To promote plastic-recycling.

Volunteers clean Marina Beach

CHENNAI: Nearly 500 volunteers got together on Saturday evening to clean the Marina seashore stretching from the Gandhi statue to the Avvaiyar Statue. They also succeeded in creating an awareness among the public to stop littering.

The Beach Clean Up Drive is one of the activities of Isha Homes under its Isha Homes Vision Chennai 2020 initiative, to encourage the youth in Chennai to start thinking of the most practical methods of managing ‘Littering and Segregation’ for the city.

Suresh Krishn, MD, Isha Homes, said, “As the government and other independent bodies continue planning, we thought youth could be given an opportunity to be a small part of this entire process as they could inject a fresh new perspective to this whole exercise.”

Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy flagged off the drive and initiated a signature campaign too. Volunteers were trained for a brief period on waste materials, degradable, non-degradable and recyclable waste before beginning the activity.

Signboards with slogans like ‘Can you make a difference?’ were put up at several places along the beach.

Actor Vivekh and Rtr PPK Manikandan, District Rotaract Representative were also present and joined in the signature campaign.

New conservancy agency to debut in city from Jan

CHENNAI: The city's newest conservancy operations manager in three zones, Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, has decided to commence the work in one zone, Teynampet, from January. The process to select at least 3,500 to 4,000 conservancy workers has started. While about 1,700 workers are meant for sweeping, about 2,000 will be involved in the collection and transfer of garbage in the three zones.

"We initiated a three-day selection drive on December 18 to recruit conservancy workers in the city. There has been a good response for the interviews. Interested and qualified workers of the previous conservancy agency too are welcomed," Ram Mohan Rao, national head of Ramky Enviro (Municipal Solid Waste Management) told TOI over telephone from Hyderabad.

Though the new agency had earlier said that their full-fledged operations would start only by March 2012, the Chennai Corporation had asked it to speed up the process, resulting in decison to commence operations from January. Rao said, "We will submit a detailed plan to the civic body in this week about the future plans, including the strength of the workers and other infrastructure for the operations."

Noting that Ramky Enviro was operating conservancy works in Singapore and about 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, he said: "When we start the operations, there will not be any overflowing garbage in any dustbins in the city. A GPS-enabled technology will streamline garbage collections and vehicle movement and conservancy workers. Not only India, we have been handling conservancy works in Singapore, which is known as the cleanest city. We will try to make Chennai look like Singapore."

The Hyderabad-based Ramky Enviro was awarded for the Rs 560-crore contract for collection, segregation and transportation of garbage in Teynampet, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones of the corporation for a period of seven years. With a bid of Rs 1,460 per metric tonne of garbage collected, Ramky Enviro was the lowest bidder for clearing garbage from 88 sq km.

"It's better to conduct trial operations before the end of this year. They may require some hand-holding from the corporation in the initial period. The civic body, which is short of conservancy workers, may find it hard to clear garbage from these zones during the transition period," said R Govindaraj, joint general secretary, Exnora International. Neel Metal Fanalca will wind up its operations by the end of this month.

like Robert De Niro in Taxi driver - "you talking to me!?!" (which is parodied in Dasavatharam)

okay formula change. E=MC^2 + the weak force + electromagnetic force + gravitational force + strong nuclear force + whatever possibility of a tachyon particle + higgs boson + Namita bosoms []+ neutrinos

okay sir, equation set right!
