The carts in the pic look really small. It'll start overflowing half way through the street and the tradition of collecting garbage from one place and spilling it all the way till the garbage dumping zones will be kept.

Garbage dumping yards in Ashtalakshmi Nagar

CHENNAI: While the residents of Ashtalakshmi Nagar have been forced to put up with lack of proper civic amenities, the empty plots in the area, which are being converted into garbage dumping yards, is exposing them to health hazards.

Almost every street in the vicinity has an empty plot with a board claiming ownership of the place. Residents say that whenever the water stagnates after rain, civic workers fail to turn up to collect the garbage, thereby forcing them to dump it in the plots.

“For days together, we are pushed to store the garbage in our apartments. It becomes impossible after a point of time. So, we are forced to dump it there,” says an elderly woman on 21st street, adding that the mosquito menace had become unbearable too. Residents say that when water gets stagnated in these plots, theyturn into a hiding ground for snakes.

“We come across so many snakes during the monsoons. Our grandchildren wade through the same water to go to school. We keep praying that they do not get bitten,” said Jagannathan, a 70-year-old resident of the 20th street.

These residents now want the Corporation to order the plot owners to either take measures to avoid stagnation of water or build concrete fences so that people do not enter these empty pieces of land.

I think they can create a concept that all house who segregate the waste will be certified as Green houses and some financial gifts can be provided for the same.

The CC is around 400 sqkm, and why is it that Ramkys is responsible for only 88sq km. Who is going to collect the garbage in the rest of the areas? Are they going to expand their operations in the other areas in a phased manner?

I am sure most of you would have heard about the ugly indians and their efforts to transform the neighbourhood in Bangalore. Is anybody aware of such efforts in Chennai?

New conservancy agency's D-Day

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle2793607.ece

The new conservancy agency, Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd., will begin operations in the city at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

The firm, which will handle the operations in Adyar, Kodambakkam and Teynampet zones, will start with five wards in Teynampet zone. Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy is scheduled to flag off the employees and vehicles from the Gopalapuram playground.

Giving details of the operations, a senior executive of the company said that a compactor would be deployed for each ward. Depending on the size of the ward, each would get 30 to 40 tricyles, 30 to 40 sweepers equipped with rake, brush, shovel and a 120-litre bin with wheels; and a supervisor.

Each zone would be divided into three unit offices.

The firm plans to collect door-to-door garbage from 6 a.m. “Conservancy operations would be from 6 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. with a break of half an hour. We are trying to educate residents by distributing pamphlets about the need for source segregation. We have sought the help and guidance of the Chennai Corporation in this. The tricycles would have six 50-litre bins for storing different kinds of waste. We would be collecting non-degradable waste separately,” the source said.

The Ramky staff would be dressed in blue uniforms with reflecting orange chest bands. Residents could call the company's toll free helpline 1800-425-1566 for complaints and suggestions.

The compactors would also remove garbage around the bins and spray lime powder around them. Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd. is involved in conservancy operations in 17 States, including Delhi, Mumbai, Aurangabad.

It is expected to extend its operations to all three zones by this month-end.

Even i've been thinking about this over the past couple of days. Till now, I've not heard of anything like that in chennai.

But can we start something like that? Some small bit on our part to at least make a couple of streets clean.

Who is going to tackle the problem of public urination and defecation on the streets of Chennai... folks need to develop a sense of hygiene first. I have traveled to many countries but I am always embarrassed taking my kids out for a walk in Madras as we invariably see multiple folks relieving themselves in public.

In Chennai Civic exnora has been functioning well in many localities of Central & South Chennai. Those interested can start the same in their localities and take the advices from MB Nirmal & team.

For the past 15 years, We are not dependent on CoC for our street waste collection and we also have Source separation of Organic wastes and we manufacture manure from our wastes for our gardens. In Besant Nagar exnora, earthworms can be bought.

We also stopped urination and defacation in our streets and nearby. We also implemented Storm water drainage with the help of CMESSB & CoC.

Please get your shoes dirty & wet to keep your streets clean.

All the Best

COC has to construct more toilets atleast 1 for every 500 M in every nook and corner of the City. The stinky dark bhoot buildings will not solve the purpose. Even in Annasalai there is no public toilet. To make it financially viable COC should tender out the toilets . Firms winning the bid will construct, maintain the toilets. The user charge will be fixed. But they can earn from advertise inside, outside and above the toilets. If COC wants chennai to be clean a dust bin every 50 m and toilets every 500 m is must.

Power generation from waste in a year

The Chennai Corporation will commence power generation from waste in a year, Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy said here on Thursday.

It will call for expression of interest for the project and the civic body is hopeful that suitable technology for the power generation would soon be identified, he said. The Corporation also has plans to change the existing garbage transfer process to improve conservancy operations in the city, he added.

Mr.Duraisamy said this while launching the conservancy operations of Chennai Municipal Solid Waste Pvt. Ltd., a Special Purpose Vehicle owned by Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd. that has got the new conservancy contract.

The company would have the responsibility of conservancy operations in Kodambakkam, Teynampet and Adyar zones for seven years.

The Chennai Corporation would pay a tipping fee of Rs.1,469 per tonne of waste collected and transported by the company.

A total of 4,000 workers, 1,500 tricycles, 3,000 bins of 1,100-litre capacity each, 2,200 bins (120 litre capacity each), 67 compactors, nine emergency vehicles, nine green waste vehicles and three mechanical sweepers would be deployed for the conservancy operations in the three zones.

On Thursday, the company started operations in five wards in the Teynampet zone. The company would extend its services to all the three zones by January 30.

Awareness campaign would begin in the residential localities to make residents cooperate with the conservancy operator for making the city cleaner, the Mayor said.

The private conservancy operator has also been asked to make changes to the micro plan of action as the civic body has decided to close down garbage transfer stations in the city.

A group of garbage bins would be placed in specially designed enclosures in residential localities and garbage would be taken directly to dumpyards, Mr.Duraisamy said. Corporation Commissioner P.W.C.Davidar and executives of Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd. participated.

Power Generation from Waste:
Only possible if total control is given to Pvt sector in choosing the technology and O&M contractor. Not CMDA who failed with Koyambedu experiment.

Portable mobile toilets can be used - they are the size of telephone kiosk booths, and they have chemical disposal.

Ramky on road to make it a clean Chennai

CHENNAI: Beginning Thursday, garbage clearance in wards 9, 10 and 13 of the Chennai Corporation is being handled by Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd.

Taking over from previous service provider Neel Metal Fanalca, the new company has taken a contract for seven years.

The company has 4,000 employees, who will be putting into use 1,500 tricycles, 3,000 garbage cans of 1,100 litre capacity, 2,200 garbage cans of 120 litre capacity, 678 compactor lorries and nine emergency vehicles to clear garbage in the city.

The Corporation will pay `1,469 for every ton of garbage removed. Installation of plastic bins at a cost of `110 crore was started last week.

Ramky Enviro will begin work in Ward 10 from January 21 and in Ward 13 from January 25.

Laying of plastic roads which began last week and garbage clearance is just the beginning of things to come, said a press release from the Corporation.

Plans are under way to close the seven smaller garbage collection units in the city and directly transport the garbage to Perungudi and Kodungaiyur.

Source segregation of garbage will be implemented on a step-by-step basis, and people will be expected to cooperate wholeheartedly with the workers for the smooth and effective functioning of the process.

Others present at the inaugural function were Deputy Mayor P Benjamin, Corporation Commissioner PWC Davidar, Deputy Commissioner (Works) Dr R Anandakumar, Chief Engineer K Vijayakumar, Superintending Engineer (SWM) MS Premnath, and the Ward Councillors Sakthi, SIC Manikkam and Murugan.
