I think there is a new arena named 'the barclays centre' nearing completion in New York.

How come they get a sensible name out the deal, and we get this mockery?!!!

some more info on the refurb from the Birmingham Post

Quote:
......The NEC Group is currently working with architects Broadway Malyan on a major internal and external overhaul of the facility which will cost £20.4 million over the next two years, with the venue remaining open throughout. The end result should be an arena to rival anything currently out there, said Mr Thandi.

“This is going to help us to become the beating heart of the city,” he said. “The new arena will be over four floors with 540 more seats and an increased standing capacity of 800 with significantly more bars and restaurants and top class hospitality so that we have an arena for the 21st century in partnership with a 21st century brand......

Ugh. I hate all this commercial rebranding. How to make a venue generic and lose its identity.

Although having said that, the name NATIONAL Indoor Arena wasn't exactly very local to the venue - it should have been Birmingham Arena or even Brindley Place Arena or something.

At least it'll be keeping its NIA name, it'll just have a slogan underneath it that's all

Its a shame they didn't extend the other side to make it a full bowl arena like M.E.N. and the O2, or maybe that could come in the future.

It is named National because it was the UKs first bespoke indoor athletics arena. I don't mind the sponsor name it's not as if it's a 110 year old football ground is it?

Ooh I always assumed those ribs would be concrete, but it looks like they'll be wooden - or at least clad in wood panels. Nice!

I thought they would be steel. Now it looks to be wood - very appealing!

It's aged sooo terribly!

Almost as bad as the red brick paving around town!

Not aged as bad as the MEN Arena in Manchester which is 5 years younger ...

... and from those MEN images, you realise what a superb setting our very own NIA is in too.

O dear, never seen photos of the MEN Arena, that's quite pants TBH, Not being biased but I prefer our current NIA, and that's been there much longer, and with this refurb its going to rocket Birmingham ahead of many cities arenas...again.

but to be fair you never see the MEN like that as it sits above the station so its setting is rather wonderful

Why are we talking about Manchester on here? F them. They can waste their money in their crappy little city if they want...

That MEN arena really does look awful. Reminds me of the whole of Liverpool. A dump.
