The biggest ships aren't able to sail through the english channel, maybe its bottom would be a good source for construction material?

Seems like something they'd propose in the UAE. Would be nice to see a winter Olympics in the Netherlands though. Build the sucker!

Well, that sounds like a great idea:
Bring all the nuclear waste of the world to the Netherlands, dig a hole, put it in, put 2km of concrete above it - problem solved!

Just build this all on high lands. Its too huge and expensive to be build from sea level. In malaysia which isnt a cold country, they build a city on a mountains to get the cold climate moderately.

A new 'rendering'
Quote:
2012 - Year of the mountain

2011 was the year when the idea of a mountain in the Netherlands took shape. In recent months, lots of people and companies worked hard to get attention for the plans - with success. We want to thank everyone who supported The Mountain - and we want to thank the people who bought cycling shirts or certificates (or still do). With their financial support, we can further develop the idea of the Mountain.

Is 2012 the year the idea is evolved into a real plan. By the end of 2012, we must know how to build a mountain, how much it will cost and how much it yields. In the coming months a lot of work needs to be done, but your support is always welcome. 2012 will be the year we make the impossible possible.

An interesting topic. I wrote an article about this project, since I had to choose an ┤architecture related┤topic to write about. I did some interviews and gave my vision. It is not totally objective, but nevertheless (hopefully) enjoyable. This render below is selfmade and is just to give an idea how it could look like this ┤sustainable mountain┤ would be located 10 km offshore.

Why not just drill the core and let nature built the mountain for free.

This kind of idea is great to imagine, but would be a disaster if ever build.

Where would all the stone and earth come from? You would have to tear another one down to build this one. Anyone got a mountain in their back yard for sale?

Building a mountain like that on low lying countries like the netherlands brings a significant change in weather to that region. I hope they have taken that into account.

The mountain will be build of kevlar and it is hollow, so the weight shouldn't be a problem. The only disadvantage of kevlar is its strength. It should not only hold the skiers the forrest and the snow, but also the newbuilt city with skyscrapers.

If built, it would be cool , but I doubt something of that magnitude could even be built. It would be way too expensive. I wonder if they would hire a brutalist architect to make the final design...
